Heather, Steve, and all the rest of you who suggested Motzarella. It works
great.

You are most welcome, Claude. I was some ticked when my ISP stopped
providing news groups. Their excuse was that not many people used them.
Which to some extent was true, but I am not about to blog, use Forums
and so on.
Two of my Toronto antivirus experts/friends put me on to Motzarella and
*aioe.org* and a few others, but I have found Motzarella to be the best
one.
And their tech support is super....even if it is free. I have lots of
FREE software programs, etc. Got most of them from either the antivirus
or Microsoft guys. So if anyone ever needs a proggie, etc., just ask.
A lot of them are anti-malware obviously. But they work just as well as
the pay ones, and in some cases work better.
Cheers.....Heather

Incidentally, for any serious newsgroup junkies, you can get a
paid account http://www.giganews.com/. It's not cheap. The
minimum is $8 per month. But it provides very, very extensive
coverage both in the numbers and types of newsgroups and the
number of days of retention. In fact I had a problem using it
for some of the groups I'm interested in (e.g. rec.photo.digital)
because my middle-aged computer (like it's post middle-aged
owner) doesn't have enough memory to handle the header download.
I get access to Giganews free through my Comcast ISP. Comcast
pays them to provide news service to all the Comcast customers.

Alan,
Don't take this as gospel, but I read where Comcast is lining up to follow
suit (Verizon, Time Warner, Sprint, Road Runner, et al) in taking steps to
limit or restrict completely their customers' access to the Usenet. May or
may not just be a vicious rumor. That said, Giganews is a well-respected
commercial news service. And $8-10, or so, is not unreasonable, particularly
for those folks who frequent the binaries hierarchy to download digital
images.

Bummer!
It sometimes happens that the big elephants run in packs.

$10/month. If not, it was another good one like it.
But many ISP's are dropping Usenet the past year or so, claiming not
enough of us use them. Ergo, they are costly. BS. But you can't fight
the big elephants!!
Motzarella has been good for a year or so. The odd glitch at times.
But I would also consider going back to News.individual.net in Germany
for 10 Euros. They were excellent.
Cheers.....Heather

BTinternet give the same access here in the uk with their 'unlimited'
deal effectively including the Giganews $20/month tariff thrown in
free of charge. Oddly, I've never seen this dangled as a perk
anywhere in their advertising - I think that speaks to some extent of
usenet's relative obscurity, and maybe also BT's way of preempting any
outcry should they decide to rescind the service in the future. What
fascinates me most about all this is how 'respectable' ISPs can
legally get away with providing a fast portal into the binaries which,
apart from legitimate file exchange, include all the copyright music
and film the RIAA and MPAA have been battling tooth and nail to
protect all these years. Not to mention the porn.
Maybe that's why BT don't mention it? |

That reads like a standard faq on discussion newsgroups and etiquette
- no mention of Giganews, or binaries, as far as I can see.
