VENT-- falling apart (probable gall bladder issue)
Things aren't going well at all.
Now, time for a real whine. If I didn't have PC, maybe I would just
consider this a bad streak. But, honestly, I feel like an old car in
okay condition, but continually having parts just go. That's probably
exactly how it is!!
Recently I had an eye problem (recheck on that in 2 1/2 weeks).
Anyway, Thursday night I had a great chicken dinner. I was hungry and
ate quite a bit of the broiled chicken (including dark meat). 90 minutes
later I was snacking on some pistachio nuts when all of a sudden I
started experiencing significant abdominal pain/pressure. It was
terrible. Usually, alka seltzer or rolaids works quickly when I get gas
but this was different. They didn't help. When I started sweating. I
even got concerned about a heart problem. So, after 2 1/2 hours, I said
take me to the ER. We got there at 11:00 PM. Bottom line: I was IVed
some pain killer (tramadol or something like that). I know I have had a
silent gallstone for about 25 years. Well, the doctor thinks this time
it might not be so silent. At least it isn't a heart problem. We got
home at 1:30 AM (not bad -- I sure didn't want to spend the night there
but figured I'd have to in order to exclude a heart problem --
apparently it is not that).
I am now at work and we have scheduled an ultrasound of the abdomen for
later today. Unfortunately, nothing whatsoever to eat or drink for 8
hours, so I have had nothing since last night. I also didn't sleep at
all due to the pain and I am still in pain.
I still wonder if this is some kind of weird trapped gas. I have been
burping/belching a lot but it isn't helping. It is pain and pressure
almost symmetrical but centered at the center. Last night it also went
into my upper back.
And it just got worse:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
The screw is tightening. After teaching today and having nothing to eat
or drink since 2:00 AM, I went in for my ultrasound today at 3:30.
After the test, the technician came out and said she spoke to the
radiologist and I had to go right back into the ER. So, the next 3-4
hours are spent waiting around in the ER room. Finally the doctor said
the ultrasound showed a thickening of the gall bladder, which is not
good. He suggested immediate surgery. But he said if I want I could go
home and see what happens, but I've been in pain for over 24 hours so it
probably will not resolve. Meanwhile, 17 ambulances showed up due to a
60-car pileup on I75. I decided to go home. I can come back tomorrow,
rather than wait around for who knows how long while they deal with more
serious situations. Also, I didn't want to deal with an emergency
surgery from some surgeon I don't even know. When I got home, I
contacted my family doctor. He said I did the right thing. It did turn
out that the surgeon on call was super top-notch, so I'll try and see
him on an elective basis...unless I have to say uncle tomorrow.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
It is now Sunday night. Yesterday the pain had improved by 90%.
Today I ate some more, including some low fat foods and the pain is back
about 50%. I've also been running a low grade fever 99-100.
So, time to see a surgeon at least for a consultation.

Re: VENT-- falling apart (probable gall bladder issue)
Mel, hope you are feeling better.
I am confused and maybe you can help. The term silent gallstone refers to
one who has gall stones and does not no about it. Once it is known that one
has gallstones then it is no longer "silent." About 75% of gallstone attacks
are silent. Am I wrong?
You did not mention jaundice or a yellow skin appearance. Jaundice is
typical when a stone blocks a bile duct; hence gallstone attack.
Frankly, if you were to write that you experienced nausea as well, then I
would peg you as a kidney stone attack candidate. Anyway, I wish you best of
luck in relieving your pain and finding a cause. It sure is hell to get old.

Here's another way to look at it.
I'm going to be really, REALLY PO'd if my PC kills or disables me while
I'm still otherwise extremely healthy. That has played a part in both of
my treatment decisions after my initial surgery. Not that a gall bladder
or detached retina are worth dying over, but if enough parts go bad, at
least the PC's QOL hit isn't as pronounced or isolated. If enough other
alligators come to my PC party, it may help me fear the first, oldest,
largest alligator less, even if only due to the distraction.

Gourd:
Silent means they are there but are not causing problems. I have had
this gallstone for 25 years and it never caused a problem.
I am still not convinced it's that, but it probably is.
I have an appointment to see this surgeon for 1 week. By then I'll see
how I'm doing. I've been eating non-fat stuff now (healthy, anyway). The
pain is greatly diminished but I stil have this annoying low-grade fever

Now THAT'S FUNNY!!!
Still getting significant fevers about 2 hours after eating (not much
gut pain -- the real test would be for me to eat a high fat meal - that

Unfortunately, things are not getting better. I have been running a
temperature most of the day, getting up to 100.4 (mostly under 100).
I have my routine physical tomorrow and see the surgeon on Monday.
Hope I can hold out until then.
I'm also getting weaker due to not eating much. This fat free (or
extremely low fat) seems to leave me with few choices. I'm losing
weight, but I'm going to work harder at finding more stuff to eat. This
is tough on my wife, too

A friend of mine in his 70s has eaten essentially zero fat in the 16
years since he was airlifted off a ski slope into a quad bypass. He
still winters in Baja ... windsurfing. Surely it's not THAT difficult;
you should be able to stuff your face on fruits, veggies, whey/casein
powder for protein ... heck, add carefully selected lean meats and
that's what I eat all the time. Have you Googled gallbladder diets for
ideas and menus?:

I have whey protein and I used to make good shakes, but the protein has
fat, but not much (4 gms) so I'll reconsider that. The main problem
right now is the fever.
We are going to look at lean meats also.

Well, I am home, but things were/are rough!!
Long story, but it turned out that my family physycian might have saved
my life! After my routine physical on Thursday and after listening to me
about my symptoms (fevers), he was worried about a gb infection. He
personally called the surgeon and got me in that same day. I had surgery
Friday morning and it turned out the gb was totally gangerenous!!!
I might not have made it if I waited to see him on Monday.
I had no clue it was this bad!
Basically, what we think happened:
This stone I've had for years blocked the bile. The gb swelled and
eventually got to where it was blocking its own blood supply, causing it
to die. The sudden diminishing pain was due to the gb dying.
I was in the hospital through late Sunday. I am still in a lot of pain,
on antibiotics (cipro). Hopefully, no complications will occur

Your sun is shining brightly, Mel. Many men get unnecessarily ill or
dead because they're unwilling to see a doctor. Many of those who do see
the doc see a less astute one than yours. Many of THOSE are too macho
(Spanish for "stupid") to follow through.

I have never heard of anything like that. I never even considered internal
gangrene. Wow.
