Default Am I losing the ability to walk?

Three days ago I woke up with a terrible pain in my right buttock. It
was numb and when I pressed there, the pain was hoprrible. I copuld
just about get up. As long as I stayed steady, no pain. But as long as
I tried to move - pain.

Getting up and down was a real chore. Felt like I'd been given a
novocaine shot.

Pain in lower back continues but at a modest level. Sleeping is
difficult. I can walk okay once I'm up and about. A walker helps.

What's the prognosis folks?

Hell if I know? I am no Doc but I bet if you laid flat on the floor and set
your little legs up on the couch and rested there it might take pressure
off. Work for pregnant women and fellas with lower back pain. Costs nothing.
Let me know.

Joe, that's typical of sciatica
http://www.spine-health.com/topics/c...tica/sc01.html and it says
right there that people with cancer should contact their doctor.

It says there that it can last from 2 weeks to a few months and that's
common, however it lasted 8 months.once for me, after "swinging" (as in
shovelling snow).

I use heat on the lower spine and sleep on my side with a pillow between
my knees, which takes the strain off the lower back, but I don't know if
that's the right instructions for someone with a tumor on the spine, so
please contact your doctor.

Hi J., and Joe,

That does sound typical of sciatica, and sciatica I've had (in my
mid-forties), had it bad.

But heat is the last thing in the world you want to use for sciatica !
Sciatica is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve in the buttock, often
related to a bulging disk that is pressing on (impinging on) other nerves in
the spine. So the "downstream" sciatic nerve becomes inflamed, and at that
point the "screwed up signals" your sciatic nerve is sending your brain
about the general state of your buttock and leg produces all kinds of
side-effects including "stabbing sensations," hot, cold, tingling as if your
leg or buttock was "asleep" from cut-off circulation.

Heat, massage, vibration, chiropractice manipulation, etc. are likely to
increase the inflammation !

The moment I began using ice-packs, I began to get immediate relief from
sciatic symptoms, and thanks to using ice-packs, and anti-inflammatory
medication, I was (narrowly) able to avoid laparscopic surgery.

Completely agree with J. here that your acute condition definitely requires
medical analysis and advice. So take my words with a larger-than-usual grain
of salt. What "seems like" sciatica in your case may be related to your
cancer, and you need medical scientific advice, not speculation.

best, Uncle Sally

Ice for the buttock area sounds good to me.

I had similar problem in my ow back tailbone area of excrutiating pain
and numbnes. still hav some numbness in one buttock nd one thigh. they
say it's from surgery and how I was gronded on the table. I had it bad
1st colon surgery and it went away eventually. Now it's back from liver
stent surgeries. The pain in the low back was diagnosed by a sharp
thinking onco doc as coxydenia (SPELLING!). MRIs and CTs showed nuthin
but he sent me to a pain management guy who put me asleep 3 times and
gave me shots in the tailbone and it cured it. Ask about that, it coud
solve yer problem.
