| | | breast cancer to lung cancer I was wondering if anyone had heard of breast cancer making the jump to
lung cancer where the breast cancer started on the right side, and then
all of a sudden an xray showed a small dot in the left lung.
Only one dot in the lung and no "trail" of cancer cells.
Im wondering because my mom got recently diagnosed with breast cancer
and then the doctors saw a small dot on her chest xray.
A CT scan is planned tomorrow, but I can't focus on anything.
I would assume (and of course im not a doctor) that if it would go from
the right breast to the left lung, there would be more than a single
dot on the left lung.
any insights would be helpful |

It's very common for breast cancer to metastasise to lung. It gets there via
the bloodstream, so there is never a "trail", and the side is irrelevant |

| | | Re: breast cancer to lung cancer i've read your previous posts and I understand that you are the board's
"resident" oncologist.
you've put into some of your previous posts the need for compassion and
understanding.
have you ever considered being less callous in your replies?
i appreciate the information and your candor, but the reply seems to be
directed as a reprimand of my assumptions rather than a supportive
response to a group thats listed as "SUPPORT.cancer"

Can this occur during stage 1?

Please forgive the intrusion, & Steph will probably be back - he's the
onc & I'm not - but this is sort of a backwards question. The staging
is determined by what is known. Once a met appears, that can change
the staging. Ask your Mother's Onc about her current staging. You may
have to wait until all the tests are complete & results are known.
Here are some links for you. Maybe J has some better ones. You might
also want to visit alt.support.cancer.breast where there are more
people who don't have end-stage breast cancer. This newsgroup has
people with all varieties of cancer, including end-stage breast &
prostate, but there are more specialized groups for breast & prostate.
Not trying to send you off, just wanting you to get the best support
available for you & your mother. http://www.breastcancer.org/dia_pict_staging.html http://www.ehealthmd.com/library/bre...C_staging.html
I just reread what I wrote & it sounds rather cold to me. Not
intended. Sending warm, caring wishes to you & your mother.
Best,

I hate not being in control and not knowing what tomorrow brings. I
mean just 2 weeks ago, we knew nothing of this, and now everything has
been turned upside down.
Thanks again for the links.

Yes. He'd be wise to get Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book and start reading it
and join alt.support.cancer.breast once he has more information.
There's more than one type of breast cancer
It's quiet there, probably due to holidays, but somebody will reply to him
(once he has more information).

Not necessarily, the spot on the lung can very well be a metastasis from
the breastcanver, but it's always possible that your mother has two
different cancers at the same time. She wouldn't be the first.

Or it could be a benign incidental finding or artifact.
Wouldn't be the first.

What was "callous" about my reply? You asked a question, and I answered it.

Any reprimand is entirely in your own mind. |

It can occur when the original stage is stage 1. Metastatic disease is stage
4, however |

MC, I understand the waiting & not knowing are some of the hardest parts.
And it takes just a moment to shake up your life & know it will never be
quite the same again. We've been there in one way or another & do
understand. It's OK to rant here. Many of us have.
Steph answers questions with not much embellishment. One-liners. He's a
busy radio-oncologist & that's just his style. So please don't read
anything into that. One thing I have learned here is which treatments
stand a chance of benefit & which to question. If our loved ones can be
cured, we want them to have that chance. Short of that, we want them to
enjoy their remaining life as much as possible - which may include
treatments to make them more comfortable.
I hope you have answers soon.
Hugs,

| | | Re: breast cancer to lung cancer MC.....i don't have any advice only to say that it truly sucks, that
waiting game. My mother is under hospice care...and i am learning
slowly about learning to be patient.
As for not being in control and not knowing what tomorrow brings? All
i can offer are ((hugs)). I am a true "a" type personality and am
starting to wonder if any of us are ever in control of anything much
less of what tomorrow may bring. Be that as it may, you and your Mom
are in my thoughts and prayers.
Please let us know how things are when you know....
hugs....
