Cancer drugs harmful to brain cells
By John von Radowitz
Published: 30 November 2006

Common cancer drugs may be more harmful to the brain than the tumour
cells they are meant to destroy.

Laboratory tests have shown that dose levels typically used when
treating patients killed 70-100 per cent of neural cells but just
40-80 per cent of cancer cells. Several types of healthy brain cell
continued to die for at least six weeks after exposure.

The findings, published in the Journal of Biology, may help explain
the little understood cancer therapy side effect of "chemo brain".

Patients can suffer symptoms ranging from memory loss to seizures,
loss of vision and even dementia. Until recently, these problems were
often blamed on a patient's mental state.

However, a growing body of evidence is now leading doctors to accept
the reality of "chemo brain".

A study this year suggested that more than 82 per cent of cancer
patients may suffer some form of mental impairment. While scientists
have suspected that chemotherapy could have an impact on the central
nervous system, it was not clear how this might occur.

Mark Noble, from the University of Rochester Medical Centre in New
York, who led the research, said: "This is the first study that puts
'chemo brain' on a sound scientific footing, in terms of neurobiology
and cellular biology."

The brain is populated with several types of cells that produce or
repair normally functioning neurons. These are classified as dividing
stem cells, dividing intermediate cells, precursors and progenitors,
and non-dividing mature cells. Dr Noble's team exposed healthy brain
cells as well as cancer cells to three chemotherapy drugs, carmustine,
cisplatin and cytosine arabinoside, used to treat a wide range of
diseases, including breast cancer, leukaemia and brain tumours.Tests
showed that the drugs were toxic to all the different cell types even
at very low concentrations.

The research points to several strategies for making cancer treatments
safer, such as applying protective agents and screening to see what
cell populations are most at risk.

These drugs are rarely used to treat breast cancer. As far as I know,
only in event of brain metastases.

RT for symptomatic brain mets.
Cisplatin: Multiple primary uses
cytosine arabinoside = ARA-C primary uses AML and meningeal leukemia (other
uses)
carmustine (BCNU) primary use - primary brain tumor (other uses)

Readers: Please disregard our replies. (above)
I think we're both iincorrect.
In other words, if you have a breast cancer treatment (mets to brain) ask on
sci.med.diseases.cancer and alt.support.cancer.breast Our opinions vary.

And my replies were over-generalized and not specific enough for each possible
situation.
Each situation varies, so too the cancers.
It would take me forever to try and untangle what I posted.
( I wish I'd never replied)
If you have a question about your situation, post the specifics.

And please ignore this thread.
It's been crossposted to multiple newsgroups, by the original poster (Ilena) to
stir up controversy.

And "chemo brain" has been posted separately on each newsgroup and there's a
current thread on alt.support.cancer.breast where some patients said they have
chemo brain and never had chemo, so aging factors and//or hormones are
suspected.
Thank you.

When I had chemo, I a doctor said to me, chemo effects every cell in the
body including the brain. The point being, your choices are limited dying of
cancer or getting chemo with some side effects. Brain cells unlike other
cells do not reproduce themselves.

Actually, there was a study in breast cancer patients who had chemotherapy.
There were changies in the brain (which were reversed with time).

So this definitely applies to some breast cancer patients, as well.

Mr Big J.................you sound like a medical salesman to
me...........

Why I said that?

Cause, you know 'nuts' on how those drugs were made, from what raw
materials being used to manufacture those drugs.

You are only good at, when thoase medical salesman came knocking at
tyour door and tell you on how those drugs should be consummed (ie. 3
times per day or 2 times per day, beofre meals or after
meals.......LOL.....) and your job is just relay those instructions,
acting as a go-betwen, from medical salesman to your
patients.......without even have the slighest ideas on how these drug
being manufactured, from what raw materials.

No wonder, ppl like you had been contributing to the recent emergence
of 'antibiotic resistent' causing 'ripples' to world medical
communities

Very sad indeed. with ppl like you around

Not only women with breast cancer. Both sexes and different cancers.
Now that male patients are becoming more vocal, this problem is getting
the attention is deserves!
