STONY BROOK, N.Y., September 5, 2008 – Allen G. Meek, M.D., Professor and
Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Stony Brook University
Medical Center, was honored by the New York Grand Lodge Foundation, Order Sons
of Italy in America, for his leadership and outstanding work as a physician and
researcher in the field of radiation oncology. The organization recognized Dr.
Meek at its inaugural Cancer Research Luau for charity, held at the Chateau La
Mer in Lindenhurst, N.Y., on August 14.
The Sons of Italy honored Dr. Meek because of his outstanding expertise and
compassion as a physician who has cared for many cancer patients for over 25
years. The organization also cites his spearheading research on improving
cancer treatment methods, particularly via collaborative work between Stony
Brook University Medical Center and Brookhaven National Laboratory, currently in
area of particle beam therapy.
Dr. Meek was also recognized for his extensive work with Breast Cancer Help,
Inc., a Long Island-based community not for profit organization with a focus on
action and advocacy to eradicate breast cancer. Dr. Meek has served in numerous
positions at Breast Cancer Help, Inc. since its inception in 1994. Over the
years, the Sons of Italy has collaborated with Breast Cancer Help in supporting
various breast cancer charities.
In addition to this honoring by Sons of Italy, Dr. Meek this past May was
recognized in Newsday as one of Long Island’s Top Oncologists and was elected to
Fellowship in the American College of Radiology.
On September 18, 2008, Dr. Meek will also be honored by the Stony Brook
Radiation Oncology UFPC in celebration of his 25th anniversary as Founding Chair
of the Department. The event will take place at the Port Jefferson Country Club
and will benefit cancer research funded by Breast Cancer Help, Inc.
