| | | FIL Update Hi Gang,
Little update on FIL following yesterday's Addenbrookes appointment.
Blood test done, another x-ray and then Consultant's appointment.
FIL starts chemo this afternoon, a combination of Gemcitabine and
Carboplatin. Joint injection today followed by top up of Gemcitabine next
week, one week off and then same cycle starts again. He's scheduled for at
least four cycles with discussion with Consultant, blood test and x-ray
every third week day before cycle starts
again.
Second hammer fell during Consultants chat though and that was chemo is
purely for palliative purposes (had a feeling it was going to be) and FIL
seemed to understand what this means, I think he was a bit gung-ho that we
were going to get rid of this and that life would return to normal. Now's
the time when a bit of reality will set in, he seems in good spirits though
and keeps saying that at 74 he's had a good run.
None of the above is really surprising to me as I had a feeling that this
was going to be the outcome, I just have a really selfish streak coming to
the surface that I so don't want to go through this little number again and
am having to quash feelings of resentment that there is indeed another son
that should be sharing the load. I asked FIL if he wants me to tell son and
he adamantly said no. I can see the road ahead is going to be very rocky
and it's not helped by FIL mentioning Tony and his illness at every
appointment, I think in his own way he's trying to "qualify" me as being the
right person to see him through. The appointments and treatment at
Addenbrookes are already a flashback to the past and hard going for me but I
fully realise that the poor chap has no-one else and I will of course be
100% there for him. If anything in some ways this time round is harder
because I don't truly know FIL all that well and am having to sit back on
decisions, whereas with Tony it was so clear-cut.
Anyways, I'll see what transpires today, sorry if it turned into a slight
rant ;-) but it is also half-term and I've had to put the girls to one side
again cos my head's not big enough for all the hats that I have to wear ;-)
Hugs All

Just as you're picking up the pieces and getting on with life... Maybe
it's better that you don't know your FiL that well? Maybe it won't be
so hard this time because you're not as close to him as you were to
Tony? I don't know. Oh dear. And during half term, too... (ours is
next week for some reason none of us can fathom. All our friends are on
half term this week and we're at school. Next week we'll be ready to
party and everyone else will be back at school. But that's another
story). Are the girls old enough now to be left to their own devices
for a bit? I've lost track of their ages but they must be what, teens
and coming up to teens? Have they got to the stage when they'd prefer
to be left alone with their friends? Maybe you and FiL are doing them a
favour... Or maybe not.
Sorry, I'm rambling. Tell you what, have a hug and some cake. Today's
special isn't chocolate; it's a plain sponge infused with brandy (not
flavouring but the real stuff), with brandy butter in the middle and
fresh whipped extra thick double cream on top. I've decorated it with
slices of apple (good job it's a virtual cake given that I'm allergic to
fresh apple) and it's being served today as a special treat with a small
[1] glass of calvados - for medicinal purposes, obviously. Hic!
[1] Shmall in thish houshe ish sheldom shmaller than half a pint...

At the moment he has what I can only describe as a wracking cough which can
sometimes take a couple of minutes to clear and occasionally shortness of
breath. When he was checked over at Papworth the specialist commented that
his chest was quite tight.
I've also discovered that the other test at Papworth was for kidney function
not liver as he told me.
His consultant at Addenbrookes was quite specific when he said that chemo
was not curative and on the consent form the box marked palliative was the
one that was ticked.

Emotionally I don't think that it will be as hard, nothing can match my
experience of three years ago. But I'm a fretful soul, particularly as he
is living alone. I found myself explaining the new medications about three
times to him yesterday (and then following with a "give me a kick if I'm too
bossy"!) He was okay with the first round of chemo and quite upbeat with
all the attention. I stuffed up a bit because the appointment was delayed
by two hours and I had planned to drop Nikki off in my office, I wasn't able
to do so, so she was my shadow again, that is until the chemo nurse reminded
me that children were not allowed in the chemo department, found it quite
difficult to split myself in two.
Well the girls would be old enough to leave for a while (14 and nearly 12)
but they bicker and fight all the time and I wouldn't want to chance it ;-)
I asked the chemo nurse for a morning appointment next week to ensure that I
will be home in time for school finish but there are going to be occasions
when I will have to "risk it" ;-)

Eeh, your're a honey with that cake, it's dribbling down my chin right now
(still got the chocolate smudges too) cos I am feeling a bit laden with all
the hats I'm wearing ;-) (and it's only the start!!)

Radiotherapy is also scheduled. My impression during the first talk at
Papworth, was that the small cell cancer was aggressive and more responsive
to chemo, therefore we hit that first.

Thanks Alayne,
Kids back to school this week? And how was your weekend?
And what did FIL think of the renovation? Thumbs up? Or had ideas on how to
improve?

Hi J,
Yep, thankfully girls went back to school today. The week seem to pass in a
bit of a blur actually with two hosp. appointments and our own dental one
;-)
FIL didn't actually make that much comment on the extension really but then
again he was looking pretty worn out by the end of Tuesday. Turns out he
was also at the prostate clinic on Wednesday as well and what with his red
poppy duties (he's in the British Legion and responsible for shipping out
the red poppy collections for several villages) he was sounding a bit
knackered when I phoned Friday.
More chemo tommorrow, the top up of Gemcitabine I think., so we'll see what
that brings. I do hope that he doesn't continue to say what he said last
week though, he introduces me as the DIL, okay fine, but then goes on to
tell everyone about Tony, but he sort of says it as though that qualifies me
as some sort of medic. Perhaps he finds it reassuring, don't know.
The girls are bizarre and so "not bothered" by it all, I thought it might
unsettle them a bit or they might be concerned for my health in some way,
not a chance ;-)
Anyways gotta dash - gotta make green jelly with spiders in (of the plastic
kind), tommorow's halloween and guess who doesn't need a mask!! Cake all
set (courtesy Kelly), buns with flies on (courtesy Nikki) and pumpkin all
prepared... just waiting for the little devils!
Warm Hugs J and thanks for thinking of us.

And... did she go as Uncle Fester? Is there a man in the vicinity with
a very high voice?
Yes, you've got to laugh. Your sense of humour is your most important
asset at times. Lose that and you may as well give up because you'll
either be in tears all the time or going slowly insane. Or both. Keep
smiling and laughing and you'll be fine :-)

No she didn't go as Fester. But I did tell the guy who did how close he came

A keen sense of humour is certainly the key to dealing with the situations
we find ourselves in.
I smiled at the thought of Uncle Fester, I have a guy in the bike club that
goes by that name, and he certainly doesn't need a mask ;-)
Hope you and your wife had a good time and the chap didn't get knee'd ;-)

Thanks Alayne,
He was pretty safe really. They are the best kind of friends, treating us as
normally as possible and always ready to invite us round for a meal,
including all the visiting relatives, even though we get few chances to
return the compliment. They don't even get upset when I liquidise the lovely
food they cook so that my wife can eat it.

Friends like that are well worth hanging on to. I've got one like that
- lovely lady who smiles and laughs all the time. If she's not smiling
or laughing (at herself usually) you know something's really wrong. I'm
going to 'lose' her soon because she's moving house - to the other end
of the country. Wail! |

Ian, what a hoot. I saw in a latter post, y'all didn't go through with it.
I had a similar idea to go as a character played by Peter Lorie. His
hair was shaved (or at least very short) and he was being interrogated
by detectives. His memorable line was "I swear it wasn't my knife!"
I thought I'd wear a striped convict suit with the little striped hat.
But I didn't have the guts. It was a dress-up at work (not a party)
so that would have taken more guts than I have. After all, I have
to work with these people every day.

Hi Alayne,
You sound so busy, don't want to take too much of your time.
Good man; continuing his routine during chemo !
Just know I'm here caring whenever you have time to update us.

Thanks J, it's good to know that even though it's Autumn here one can still
see the 'petals' ;-)
I've come up with a new life motto actually "life would be pretty boring
without all the stress"!! I've not been on here much cos life's little
challenges have included my neighbour acusing me of stealing an inch of his
land (long saga but I sent the builders in to square him out ;-) ; Nikki
being suspended from school for a day for fighting (another long story and
she was actually only standing up for herself); and an ear infection for
yours truly, which meant a visit to Mr Twat the doctor (who still has not
improved his medical knowledge over the past three years if giving me the
wrong antibiotics twice has anything to go by, fortunately I've had the
infection for over a week now and my body seems to be dealing with it far
better than he ever could!)
FIL is on his "week 3" which is no treatment this week. Next week will be
back to week 1 with Consultants/blood/x ray and then chemo on the Tuesday.
He phoned in the week to see what went on with Nikki (we were on our way
back from chemo when I had to collect her from school) and still seems in
quite good spirits. Our friend Mick bought him a mobile phone so he's been
playing with technology ;-)
Just depends on results on Monday I suppose (not looking forward to that :-(
Big Hugs J and thanks for caring.

Not a whole INCH!! Oh, you thieving thing, you! Be still my trembling
wossname. Honestly, the things people complain about. As if it would
make the slightest bit of difference if you had. I hope someone
suggested to Mr Nextdoor that he should acquire a life?

Oh dear. Did the other girl/boy also get punishment? If not - complain
long and loud to the board of governors.

You'd think he'd realise by now that you're not exactly as thick as two
short planks, wouldn't you? As long as the infection doesn't get any
worse or spread to anywhere else it'll probably clear up on its own.
Nurse Em recommends her patent cure of a small[1] tot of the spirit of
your choice, a large chunk of chocolate cake liberally laced with more
of said spirit, soft soothing music, candles and a hot relaxing bath.
In whichever order and in whatever quantities you fancy.
[1] i.e. less than a tumblerful. More than that and it grows up and
becomes a large tot.

The ridiculous thing (or one of them) is that once the boundary was
correctly re-installed, I merely retrieved the two inches he had "stolen"
over the years!! It was the icing on a catalogue of "whines" (another one
being "we were trespassing" cos the trestle table legs stood 2" on his land
for three days - or rather they didn't cos it was my land anyway). I'd lost
the plot so I called my builders in to sort and yep, Bill did call him an
"obsessive bully with no life". It did get to me a bit though cos I had
already told them about FIL and they know my situation .... people simply
get jealous over the oddist of things!

Yes, and in honesty Nikki was provoked but I am very pleased school jumped
on the situation and I turned into the mother from hell over it, so she'll
not do it again (which is just as well, it is her first term after all!)

I know, I think it is he lacking the brain cells not moi actually and
needless to say I have already pointed out the error of his ways ;-) I just
can't believe that he is still mis-advising. I half gave him the benefit of
the doubt dealing with a GBM as it's complicated, but an ear infection!
What really rankled is that cos I was on antibiotics I didn't drink on
Saturday night out with the club and I so could have done with being
sozzled!! My ears are definitely getting better anyway, and having fuzzy
hearing has its advantages when living with my kids ;-)
When they've properly cleared I think I''ll take your prescription just to
make sure ;-)

Hi Em,
Ears are getting better, although still muffled (but that's a positive as
it's the week-end!)
Do you have a cure for "Stroppiness Teenagerness"?

Teach them to drive, that way they can get out and be stroppy to other
parents. The funny thing is, thay are always sweetness and light to the
other parents. Mine passed his test a couple of Tuesdays ago and was really
happy. Mind you, he wrote of his mum's car on the Friday, three days later.
You can't have everything.

That doesn't really help, the out of sight, out of mind is only a short fix.
I've got two at university and I worry about then just the same as when they
were at home.

Thanks Ian,
Slight problem, the eldest is only 14, so I have another 3 years to wait for
"my independence" ;-)
Congrats on yours passing the car test although whoops about the car though.
My two want motorbikes but I might just take a very hypocritical stance on
that one ;-)

Hey Alayne!
There is light at the end of the tunnel. Eventually they become human
again, usually in their mid twenties, but each snot is different. My 24
year old son still gets snotty on occasion, and the 19 year old is currently
in a state of permanent PMS. Someday I'll talk her boyfriend of 4 years
into getting a good paying job, marrying her and moving the two of them and
their three cats and dog out of our house. I'm not holding my breath mind
you, but it is a nice fantasy. For what it's worth, I really adore the 24
year old's girlfriend. She's totally adorable. I'm hoping that she
continues to rub off on him.

Drive?? What, as in a *car*??? Eeek! Besides, Alayne's two are too
young for that. Thankfully.
