| | | How can I help a liver cancer sufferer? The mother of a good friend in Bosnia has been diagnosed with
metastasized liver cancer. She was previously treated for breast
cancer but it has now come back to the liver, and the doctors are
saying she can't be operated on at this stage. She has stopped the
chemotherapy after losing one third of her body weight within a few
months of starting it, and is now looking at alternative medicine.
I was wondering if there is something I could send her from the States
either to ease the symptoms or perhaps give her some hope. I was
thinking of herbal teas, vitamin/mineral combinations or perhaps
something else that could be posted in the mail.
I don't know anything about her illness so please forgive my question
if it is preposterously naive.
Many thanks for your help with this! |

The best thing you can do is advise her to get a good doctor who is familiar
with symptom control in advanced cancer and if money for medications is a
problem send her some money.
Tell her to stay away from 'alternative' treatments as many of them are
harmful and all of them are useless.
She needs support and love and understanding (a good friend) more than
anything else.

hello, my father has got a pancreatic cancer with mets in liver and lungs. A
month ago he started with The Budwig Diet and he hasn't lose any weight so
far. He takes care what to eat - tries not to eat red meat and other animal
fats and takes some suplements (minerals and vitamins). He has some pains
from time to time but not so bad. He feels well and excersise regullary
every morning. Soon he will have another check up examination and we'll see
results, I belive better then before.
I hope this will help ! |

Thanks so much for this, Ringo. What kind of supplements does your

cachexia (wasting of muscle and fat) is common in end stage cancer (and may be
what is happening with your friend).
It hasn't started with Ringo's father (yet) but it will and does in pancreatic
cancer (unless his father dies of a blood clot or other event), so Ringo's just
giving false hope here. Your friend's probably fought it long and hard. In
pancreatic cancer, some die within 3 months. Ringo hasn't wrapped his head around
that yet.
Is there some technology where you and she can talk (over the phone or internet)
and see each other?
Maybe you can make that happen, if you can't go and see her.

I don't know about sending money, Mike - how to (safely) or whether it's needed.
But my searching found that "Supportive Care at the Institute for Oncology and
Radiology of Serbia"
says that they don't do "palliative" and another place said there's one place
for 2 million people, so if it still exists, likely no room.
The same institute said "Terminal Patients: Presently, patients in the
end-stage of their disease are usually not treated in our hospital. Since
Yugoslavia has recently become a member of the Eastern and Central European
Palliative Task Force (ECEPT) of which Dr. Bosnjak is a National Representative,
we hope ECEPT will provide us with the support we need to overcome our present
problems and to create a special unit/team for end-stage patients.
Home and hospice care: Unfortunately, no specific service is provided for
cancer care at home, and we DO NOT HAVE any hospice care movement or hospices in
Yugoslavia.
Care of patients close to death is the responsibility of the general
practitioner. We do not have specialization or sub-specialization in palliative
care. A step forward in this respect was the recent founding of the Yugoslav
Palliative Care Association (President, Dr. Erzebet Patarica Huber,
Anesthesiologist)."
So that's something for the OP to look into and/or it'll be the patient's
general practitioner.

Lady Penelope? If so, I've already answered.
If not, please post new post and introduce type and stage of cancer.

Many GPs are surprisingly good at palliative care. With cancer in the liver
there is often not much to expect in tyhe way of symptoms other than
tiredness which goes with the territory. Pain can usually be managed very
well with morphine and that, combined with a willing carer and common sense,
may be all that is needed.

| | | Re: How can I help a liver cancer sufferer? FYI, Bosnia stopped to be part of Yugoslavia around 15 years ago when
Yugoslavia desintegrated. Now only Serbia and Montenegro are part of that
state.
And you can find better medical clinics in western ex-Yougoslav countries
Croatia and Slovenia(which is now part of EU) then in Serbia. |

Some people chase fairy tales and leave their family (wife/kids) destitute..
no home, no food, no income, in poverty.

I ordered this pills: http://www.zealandpublishing.co.nz/C...es.html#CANCER and we got them
only 3 days ago so I still can't write anything about them. Also doctor
prescribed my father some mixture of proteins, carbohidrates, vitamins and
mininerals (I can't remember what's that called) that he drinks 2 times a
day. It's something like meal replacement that bodybuilders take after
workout. (But he hadn't any problem with weight loss at all before he
started to drink that) He also takes C vitamin pills and he replaced coffie
with green tea. By the way, he have to be very carefull what to eat because
he has diabetes type2 and now when he is ill he constantly has high sugar in
blood although he takes insulin injections.
It's very important what somebody allready mentioned - support that we all
give him. He also prays and meditate and he says that helps him a lot.
My opinion is that if official medicine haven't solution for some disease we
certainly must try to help themselves. You can find a lot of alternative
methodes for curing cancer on the net expensive and not expensive ones but
I belive the best ones are the ones that are free and available to
everybody.

That was 2002 (October). Where's the followup on the patient?
Cliff is a shill -he's on many boards, talking about one alt treatment or
another.
People make money that way - or get products for themselves cheaper.
Son't believe what you read on the internet and stop spreading these stories,
unless yuo have their pathology report. See other post - there's fakers and
you're too naive to discern the difference

J, thank you for this information. I know there is little hope left,
so I was I guess looking for an answer where there just isn't one...
This lady is not someone I am really friends with, her son is, so I
don't think it would be appropriate for me to try to talk to her
directly and try to comfort her. |

I remember when people laughed when the premise Peptic Ulcers were tied to

When Lister proposed was laughed at too...... I wonder if people on this
