Things seem to be coming apart. It's check in time so I'll bring you
all up to date.

I started a special clinical trial at Fox Chase which required me to
be there 3X a week. Well into the trial, I was walking out to the car
when an excruciating pain hit me right under the right rib cage. I
could hardly move. My wife dragged me back to the hospital and I was
immediately given a bed. I've been there for almost a week and was
just discharged Tuesday. Apparently, the largest tumor in my liver has
gotten to the point that the membrane surrounding the liver is
compromised, thus the pain. It took a week to get pain meds adjusted,
get a catscan done to verify the problem, and break the cycle of a
5-day bout of constipation.

I'm on a very high dose pain med agenda and if I don't catch a
developing back pain in time, I spend the next 2 hours screaming and
writhing until it kicks in. Thank goodness for oxycontin/codone, but
there's a price to pay.

They put me on a ten day radiation treatment plan to try to destroy
some of the liver tumor.

I'm no longer qualified for the clinical (but it apparently wasn''t
doing much anyway).

So, things seem to be deteriorating.

The spinal tumor pain seems to be moving higher up my back too, but
they're afraid to radiate because it could harm by trachea. (Anybody
heard of that?) Meanwhile, my appetite is again pretty much lost.
Thank God for caring people, but I think it's time to start making
plans, meet with the funeral director, find a reputable crematorium,
etc.

That is crappy news, my friend. I was so hoping you would have more energy
to put into your new housing situation. Need more steam than this, huh? Here
we go again with the prayers. You got em now your turn, to do do the rest.
Take care,
Betsy

I am so sorry to hear, Joe. I hope they can bring that pain under
control & that you get on a regimine that keeps you comfortable, so
you can have some good times with your family.

You SOUND like the Joe we know! I hope you get some good weather like
we have here so you can sit out & enjoy.

Not of the trachea, if I recall correctly, but there've been 2 or 3
radiation "nightmares" reported here, (since I've been here) both from the
US and if recall correctly dosing problems. At least one resulted in
death.

Apparently they do radiation to the trachea
<http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/abstract/112685430/ABSTRACT?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0>

however I'd rather hear from Steph.

Do your people have access to all the best RT equipment, Joe?

I'm hoping you'll feel well enough to check back, over the coming days, to
see if Steph's replied.

My thoughts are with you Joe and hope you'll be kept comfortable.
J

Thanks for the support, everybody. This is such a great newsgroup!
Although my wife is not newsgroup savvy, I'll be giving her some basic
training should I suddenly become unable to update as I've been. I do
believe that you who've traveled with me this long and difficult path
deserve to know how things are going. Blessings on you even as you
have been a blessing to me.

I was just reading about fistulas which can occur from surgery or RT and can cause airway
compression between, I think, the trachea and esophagus, but I don't know if that's the harm
they're concerned about. Maybe best ask them, unless Steph knows, if /when he shows up.>

You know we care and will be watching for your posts or your wife's.
Hopefully she'll find everyone here caring and supportive.

We just lost one of our great leaders a few weeks ago, Duane McRuer, a
member of the Sierra Club's mountaineering committee, helped to train
and certify many trip leaders.

I really am sorry to hear you are not doing well, I had hoped things
would get better. Well, hang in there.

In our new home, I've made the downstairs family room in the
Adirondack Room, with pix and related stuff from those remarkable
mountains. It's as close to the peaks as I'll be getting, but it's
great to just sit by the fireplace and reminisce over the photos and
places I've been. My ashes will be dropped from a plane in a
biodegradable urn over the high peaks area. My dog, "Buddy" himself a
46er, his ashes are already there. My onc gave me 3 months or less,
but it feels like less to me.

Norman Clyde's ashes were scattered from Norman Clyde peak.
I do not know if you are familiar with him, you might like to read up on
him while you have the time.

Just google for "Norman Clyde"
One of the great characters of mountaineering.
Glen Dawson who was on the first climb of the east face of Mt. Whitney
is still living in Pasadena.

You also might like to read "Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada" by
Clarence King, who was on the Whitney party survey.

King however was also a great story teller, but his accounts of the
mountains are real.

Clarence King Peak is a great climb also. Final move is a class 5 move
with about 1000' below you.

You're our mountain climbing hero, Joe.
I hope you make it to (at least) July, as long as you're not suffering.

Sounds like you are thinking of those you will leave behind in doing
this. Congratulations to you. My Franzi's dissolveable biological
OK urn was carried out into the Atlantic by his three sons, my
daughter and I. This is what we wanted as he wanted to be forever
with me. Although the days are long without him, it gives me comfort
to walk the beach hear the surf and know he is by my side.
I hope your days are as peaceful and comfortable as can be. You are
in our prayers. Blessings to you and your family.

Hey, Joe? Can you come out to play? I have been praying you will feel
comfortable but have no words of wisdom from you!
Maybe if you feel lousy your bride will speak up for you?
Prayers are coming your way.
