Default Metastisied Breat Cancer to Liver

I have just been diagnosed with liver cancer and am undergoing chemo
therapy.

I would like to get advice on diet and exercise and any other
information would be appreciated.

Regards

Thel.

Hello Thel
I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis.
If I were you and had the same diagnosis, I'd be asking other questions.

I do hope you'll stay with us a bit while we sort some things out.
If you don't mind, did you have a liver biopsy? Or diagnosis just from a
scan?
Steph ("our" oncologist) might have a word with you, but I don't know if
it's important as to whether you have hormone receptor-negative cancer (or
not).

I think a lifetime of fitness allows a person to tolerate chemo better,
but making a change at this point might be a moot point, unless it
improves your quality of life. There may be a dip in blood counts (and
fatigue) early on with the chemotherapy, so take it as it goes. Don't push
it too much if you get fatigued.

J - I'm not an expert and know less about breast cancers than other types.

Hello

Thanks for your reply. I was diagnosed from a CT scan. I opted not to
go for the liver biopsy because my oncologist was pretty positive of
the diagnosis. The scary thing is that at present I have absolutely no
symptoms and am feeling very well. The chemo however is taking its
toll a bit but I am coping. I am now entering my second cycle of four
weekly chemo. After this another scan will be done to see if any
change has taken place. My initial breast cancer was hormone
receptive. I was put on Tamoxifen but had terrible side effects. I
was clear for about two years and I had stopped worrying about it. It
has been a shock but I am dealing with it positively.

Hello Thelma,
Thank you for answering my questions.
I did obtain some information that's relevant to your situation, but I don't know
if you saw it.
It's in another thread, and answered by Steph, seasoned oncologist, who helps out
on this newsgroup.

We often talk about there being a high cure rate in breast cancers, but I'm aware
that sometimes even those who do "all the right things" still get mets (spread),
so I hope you won't beat yourself up over stopping the Tamoxifen I understand
that it was a quality of life decision, since I read the breast cancer newsgroup,
as well.

When cure and extension of life isn't possible, some people go on chemo to shrink
tumours that are causing symptoms, then take breaks in between; others get on
chemo and stay on until the side effects are no longer tolerable or find one less
toxic or stop it when there's no more shrinkage or there's progession of the
cancer or they want to spend time travelling or taking advantage of once in a
lifetime opportunities, like family gatherings, where family members may not all
live close enough to visit often, it varies with each person.

Since you're going to be in active chemo treatment for apparently a while, I was
thinking you might want to join the breast cancer newsgroup.
alt.support.cancer.breast
There's a good bunch of supporters and patients there, as well.
(this newsgroup's often "noisier" with crossposters from other newsgroups)

If questions, such as radiation therapy arise, Steph'll be here.
I'll leave it to you to decide where you want to get your support. Or where to
post, each time.

Good luck with the treatment; I hope it won't be too hard on you.
I'll be here caring..and will watch for your updates on one or the other
newsgroup.
J

The treatment guidelines are listed in the above link. There are 2
schools of thought.
Some feel stage IV breast cancer is a terminal, therefore only
pallative treatment is offered.
Other cancer centers feel that Stage IV Breast cancer is a chronic
disease and can be treated like any chronic disease. I have seen women
with Stage IV cancer continue to work and live many years.

It is a personal choice,Depending were you live treatment options could
be limited, I woud personally opt for treatment as long as I had good
quality of life.

That's true, but it says more about the biology of the disease in those
women tahn it does about any treatment they get
There is absolutely no doubt that stage 4 bc is incurable, though
interestingly, a survey some years ago of UK, Canadain and US oncologists
came up with interesting findings. 20% of US oncologists thought it was
sometimes curable, though no UK or Canadians. Those US oncologists were
wrong.

Please cite the source of this survey, it is interesting, I have never
heard a US doctor ( or any doctor )say Stage IV is curable...I could
not find any surveys except an old nurses survey.

It was published (I think) in Clinical Oncology or Clinical Radiology.
I'll see if I can find it.
