Hi all:

Aside from all of my pain using the 0-10 scale most days are in the 7+
a few days are in the 8.5+ and 2 evenings a week I go 12+. When having
those accurances I can't stay comfortable even for a few minutes. I know
the pain will stay anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hrs. Should I call
the EMS folks for a ride to the hospital just to get stronger drugs to
kill the pain So I won't go out of my mind?

I know my Dr's have told me ( both of them if it gets so bad that it
scares you call the EMS) Anytime I'm above a 9 on the scale I'm scared.

What do you think I should do?
The bad point is if I go in time after time Does the Hospital staff
think I'm a Hypochrondrac looking to get "high" on drugs. Or should I
call my doctors and have them admit me as a precautionary step into pain
managment treatment. Last night was sooo bad, I couldn't get comfortable
nomatter what my wife and I tried. Heat packs, cold packs, More morphine
30Mg IR's, the 8Mg Daulain's, Then Methadones, Then Hot showers.
Followed up by a complete lower back/groin/ upper leg massage. This went
on and on for over 3 hrs. My wife was exhausted from tying to help me. I
was soaked from sweat and tears. I cried so much and for so long I
allmost threw up. I had to take compazine to calm my stomach.

As my body calms down I go through a whole lot of twitching (Left side
only) and whole body shakes. The shaking can last 10 seconds or for a
few minutes. AT the end I'm very sore, tired, I ache, and I can not go
to sleep. Ending up at staring at the ceiling listening to quite music
from the radio.

I think I'm starting to loose it. If we don't get help soon my mind is
going to loose this tug-of-war with my pain. The pain never seems to run
out of energy it allways has just a bit more hurt than I have to resist.
This is what happened Yesterday. We keep a log of evertime I take my
meds or when something goes wrong so we can report it to our Dr.s

Feel like I'm going to throw up. Nash brings me compazine and water. I'm
on the floor crying aging begging God to stop the Pain before I loose my
mind. It Hurst soo Much, Please Lord there has to be another way out!!

brings me into the shower. while she attempts to hold me up I take a hot
shower. Trying to make my lower back relese. Pleas release, It Hurts so
Bad God. I think I'm dying a piece at a time.

04/05/07 6:45AM getting tired of this taking a 2mg Ativan to help me to
sleep. Nash begine a slow massage of my back and lower side/groin area.

04/05/07 11:00AM I wake up in pain about 6-7 on scale.
This is what's it's like for me nearly every day. With the exception if
I do sleep in the daylight the evening can be quite. If I sleep a normal
night this Bad stuff happens durring the evening.

All of this Pain is taking its toll out on my wife. I don't allways tell
her when I am having a bad day she need rest too.

Pray for my wife and I till we can get some answers and better meds to
control this monster called PAIN.

Frank, you're alone to fight this. Print a copy of your post.
Then call the EMS. Take the copy with you, so they understand. It's possible
they may keep you in for one or 2 nights to sort out which medications (or
injections) are best to give you, then release you back to your pain
specialists since you have some sorting out to do on Monday, or keep you and
help you sort things out with their help, but yes, it is my opinion that you
need to get help with that as soon as possible.
If you've had bad reactions to something, make sure you have it written and/or
your wife goes with a paper with those written on the paper, to advise them.

So what I am saying is you may not need to keep going back, if they can things
stabilized for you, but do expect that they may keep you for at least a few
days, to watch out for reactions and tweak the pain medications the right way
and may even insert the pump that you were waiting for.

So I'm saying go, you've suffered enough.

Frank, I sure hope you get some relief and really soon. Call, EMS, they will
have no problems taking you in where you can get help. The ER Doc will
contact your Onc Doc and he will know you are not looking for a high. Maybe
he can arrange something attached to a pump if you wake his butt
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat 2 a.m. for several days in a row?

Where I live there is only (1) hospital for 125Miles Area. Yuma County
Medical Center. It's a Non Proffit Hosp. They are very full right now. I
tried last week to get into the hosptial for paim. Even with My Best DR.
(Oncologist) They told hime it would be a few (days) before they would
be able to find me a bed. The facility isn't small it has over 350 Beds
in the adult section alone and another 40 beds for babies/Children. The
Hospital see alot of business because where I live is 12 Miles from the
US/MEXICO Border. and all of this area is completely Desert. W/ the
exception of the farms next to the Colarado River. We have soo many
illegals getting hurt when they cross the border, when they do get
caught and before they are sent back to mexico they get meical treatment
.. This is US law. I have no problems with any one from any country who
needs immidiate emergency medical help. But with only 1 hospital to
servcie a region the size of 120 miles W-E by 95 miles N-S . Most
anyone who isn't from the local yuma area comes in via Helicopter. This
hospital has at least 5-8 choppers in daily and weekends 1-2 in every hr
of the weekend.

That's why I'm waiting. Even If the EMS gets me and we travel 10 miles
to the hosp. I might have to wait 4-6 hrs before I see anyone. And
Because I have a Cathederized port in my chest theyt need a Dr.s order
so they can access me. The rest of my blood vessels are shot from all of
the chemo I've had these past 17 months.

I'm in a loose-loose senario. The last time I was in the Hospital dec 26
- 31st for fever 103.6*F and severe pain they had me on 5cc's morphine
every 4 hrs. I wasn't getting any relief. When my Dr told them to move
me up to 25cc's every 3-4 hrs. They had a hard time understanding that
anyone could handle that much morphine without having breathing issues.
Once we showed them how much morphine I took at home. The morphine
commenced. I was on a morphine drip for 5 days. Then I went home.

I know I need to be in a hospital. But, maybe i shold go to another
hospital closser to Pheonix, or Tuscom, AZ Pheonix is 250 Miles away.
Tuscon is about 180+/- miles away. Lake Havasea City Where I'm going
Monday is 150+/- miles from our Home.

actually placed calls for help during the night than when we just made it
through (not wanting to disturb people) & then reported the next morning.

Frank, it's hard for us here to help you decide where to go for help -
tough situation with hospitals there - , but I'd start with onc. Tell
him this is beyond tolerating, that you need help right now. Can he meet
you at the hospital? Print what you wrote like J suggested. It is very
descriptive. If Doc can't help, try EMT. Hospital may try to stabilize
you just once & send you home. You must push for long term solution. I
don't know if you have to pay for each ambulnce transport, but if not,
keep using it until they get the picture - that it's consistant,
recurring pain. Hopefully they will find a place fot you in hospital &
get you stabilized there.

If it hurts at night, call at night. We always had more pain traumas at
night too.

As the day progresses my pain does. In the morning like right now it's
livable with 150Mg's of Morphine Sulphate Er (extended release) That'll
give me 4 hrs of help. Then whenit wears of I will repeat dose. after
that this will be the time when things may begin to slide down hill.
usually when I am up for over 9-10 hrs the pain goes into orbit. The
thing is MY PCP and Oncologist Know how bad the pain is. I have state
pain Medicaid. You have to scream and pull your hair our sometimes just
for them to listen. It took me 3 trys and 1.5 months just to get
permission to see Dr. Kane who's 150 miles from where I live. The state
has to pay for a medical transport to take my wife and I on the trip out
and back. I was told by an EMT friend that's going to cost the state
nearly 2 thousand alone for the trip.

I figure since my diagnosis I have cost the State of Arizona nearly
$700,000.00 for all my medical costs. My Monthly medicne cost I figure
runs about 4 1/2 thousand a month roughly. Then you add in 147 days I
was in the Hospital between ICU and Intermidiate care. The 4 surgeries.
The Nurses who came to my home after each surgery. The 3 rounds of chemo
at $25K a pop. I've used the anbulance 3 times so far. All for pain. But
was at another Hospital near where I lived at when I got sick.

Getting into YUMA regional is near impossible unless you're a code (
Dying, aged & sick or Truama)

I'll ask the cheif of the fire dept today he's a friend of mine. I have
been teaching the fire fighters of my town some fire fighting skills. I
was once a fire fighter with 10 yrs service in Maine.

I'd opt for Phoenix. There is much more available there than in Tucson.
I'm really surprised that Yuma doesn't have more medical facilities with
the winter influx of old people it experiences each year.

We have Yuma regional Hospital with 350 Beds plus another 45 for babies
and children. As I said in another Post being so close to the boarder.
when any illegal baorder crossers get caught and if they are sick they
go to this hospital. With some 350,000 illegals going through yuma
county evry yr. And about 2/3rds of them get caught all you need is a
small percentage of that 200K plus to tie up the whole medical system here.

When it's tied up the people who need the most can't get axcess to it.
Now I have nothing against Meicans. My Wife is fromMexico City. But She
got here Legaly with a pasport and visa. It's the others who go around
the system. And by federal Law even though they can't pay for the care
we give it to them anyhow. Basically shutting down the only hospital for
150 miles in any direction.

I don't know you and your history. But if the pain is so bad you lie on the
floor crying, you should be taking the Dr's advice to call the EMS. I
think the hospital staff are aware of the difference between a "drug high
seeking" visit and a genuine "in pain needs drugs" visit. And if you get
any problem, just refer them to your regular docs for confirmation of your
status.

My heart goes out to you. I do know how pain escalates at night - it was
similar for Socks but rarely approacing what you describe except at the
very end. I don't care how much you've cost AZ; that's the concept of
insurance & no excuse to keep you in hideous pain. I don't know what's
best. Maybe you have to somehow be at the hospital for a pain episode.
Why can't PCP & ONC advocate for you? You must be terrified as evening
approaches.

This may sound ludicrous, but in addition to the above, have you had any
training in breathing into the pain? It's part of what they teach for
childbirth, a technique. I use it so my massage therapist can work
deeper than I could otherwise tolerate - nothing like what you're
experiencing, but might be something to try in addition to the drugs.

I live in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (way-southeast Texas). We, too,
are on the border with Mexico. We have several good hospitals and we
don't have the problem with securing medical care that you do, but when
it came to H&N radiation,I went to a major cancer center in Houston.

Once out of this area, it's 250 miles to San Antonio and 330 miles to
Houston. It's only 150 miles to Kingsville and slightly further to
Corups Christi, but their facilities aren't any better than ours. I
understand, completely, what you are saying.

If the medical coverage in Yuma is so scarce, and you are in so much
difficulty, can you consider a move to be closer to a place where you
can get medical help when you need it? Yuma doesn't sound, from what you
are writing, like a place for someone with your needs to be living.
Borrow someone's motorhome, if you have to, and get closer to Phoenix if

I don't know where you're from (availabiity of hospitals), Frank, and I'm no
doctor, but shouldn't you be in a hospital. There's no reason for one to
suffer like you are when there are morphine pumps, etc. around.

It sounds like you're experiencing pure hot hell, and I hate that for you.

And this is strange, but I feel like I have answered a post like this of
yours before ... like dejavu ... have I.

You ideas are good. However with al the pain I have I can't drive more
than 30-40 minutes then I go to pieces. We moved to southern AZ so my
wife could be near her family. We live in a nice Apt that is partially
paid BY HUD. We live on $808.00 a month from my disability. There's no
way we can afford living in the metro Phx area. I lived there for over 8
yrs. The cheapest rent with Util is nearly my whole check. My wife can't
work as of yet. We're in the midst of changing her B1/B2 visa to a Green
card. We think in the next month she'll get her SS card and working
papers. Then in a few months we will have to go to Phx to see the INS
for an interview. The last step in getting a green card. Some of my
freinds are going to drive some 250 miles come down here pick us up.
Drive back to phx. The next day take care of the INS business and the
following day drive us back.

If I get my pain pump installed before thias I will be driving up. We
will stay with my Friends Kevin & Diana they are planning to pick us up
initially.

Back to money. once you deduct rent 367.00, Cable tv & HS Internet ( you
have to get cable only 2 TV stations down here) 74.00, Phone, 75.00,
food 175.00 includes stuff ins doesn't pay for. Electicity 75.00 I'm
paying extra to get ready for the summer and higher costs. I'm building
a buffer into my account. By the time the real power bills get here
(june) the bill won't kill us. Car ins 45.00, gas about 42.00
I'm up to $855.00 we have some reserves in my checking account and some
reserves in my wife's. She should have a job by june/july. A part time
job is all we need to keep this house hold afloat. We have enough funds
to make it to Dec if we had to after that I don't know what we're going
to do financialy.

If the pump work's I might try and get a part time job. Just a few hrs a
week to help with the bills.
Get aload of this. Before I got my disability I got $155.00 in food
stamps. My wife can't qualify she hasn't got a Social Security # as yet.
Once We reported I had a disability check comming in they reduced our
food stamps to $11.00. I have shown the state all my bills and They say
I can't get any more food stamps. But when I was in college in the early
90's I had a part time job that paid allmost 950.00 and I got 140.00 in
food stamps living in maine. Not that I'm 100% disabled I get nothing.

miles in any direction. and the only Truama 1 Hosp in 250 miles. even
thoughthe Hosp ha nearly 400 beds: children, babies, adaults, The place
is allways full. When illegals are caught and if they are hurt sick
they are taken toyuma regional. They sometimes get a bed over another
person. Now i'm not racist. My wife is From Mexico City, MX but she got
here Legally with her visa and passport. We are now modifying her
passport to become a green card so she can get a job to help our family.

Have you contacted the phone company? Many offer special reduced rates
for the disabled. Same thing with the utility companies. It doesn't hurt
to try.

What you DON'T need is emergency medical aid what you DO need is a pain
specialist. There is rarely any excuse for suffering pain at the level you

We get a disscount from APS our power company. currently we get a 26%
discount from 401-800KW used below 400KW it's 40% discount. Right now
we're getting the 40% but as the summer comes and the useage goes up
we'll move into the 26% if we go over 800KW the min discount will be
$14.00. As to my phone we can't it's a cell phone. we decided against a
land line it would cost Min. And no discount (qwest is cheap!!) $46.85
Plus tax a month for min. service and basci LD to call my dad and
sisters on the east coast.

Our rent is discounted $150.00 By HUD. And the less we drive and use Med
trans to go to Dr.s visits the less gas I'll use. Plus we have 2
supermarkets within walking distance (1/2 mile) from the house.

Good news from the Pain Spec. Dr. I should be going to a hospital up
north possibly this weekend for a trial to see how spinal meds work on
me. If it goes ok They will install a pump (IN ME) the pump would be
placed under my skin above my bellybutton. But the pump is the size of a
HOCKEY PUCK ( 4" Dia X 1.5" Thick Weighing 6.5OZ) they will need to
reill it anywhere from every 21d to as much as every 6 months depending
on my need. This will be figured out at the hospital durring my test.

After this is done he believes he can get some 80-nearly 90% of my pain
held in check. the ballance I would just take a few Quick acting
morphine pills to take care of the ballance of my pain. Which is fine
