More new problems

Hi all:

I have some new issues to be concerned about. 3 days ago I began to have
serious swelling in both legs and feet the left side far more worse. The
pain was so bad I went to the hospiatl. They couldn't admit me (I've
told you about their plicies) However the ER Dr was sympatheyic to my
pain. He pit me on 10cc's of Dauldin every 4 hrs from 3pmSunday till I
was discharged 2 Am Monday. When the swelling subsided. I saw my
Urologist Yesterday he thought it was my lyphatic system not properly
drianing, Said there was nothing he could do for me. I saw my Oncologist
today he order a STAT test of my left leg's atery a sonogram of the
artery looking for blood clts. No clots were found.

The problem is now the pain is reling going off the charts now. Even
laying down is very painfull. My Left foot is 2x;s larger my Left foot
id 2-3 x's larger My Left upper thigh is at least 3x's larger and is
quite painfull. We have order another MRI this time I will be knocked
out. the Last one we had a bout 5 days ago I couldn't complete even with
3.5Mg's of Atavan on board I was still having problems with
claustrphobia. Before I had cancer I never had a problem with this. Now
with the eception of a cat/Pet scan I freak out or go nuts being in an
enviroment thats less than 4 inches fromm my face.

My pain is so bad I taking 8-10Mg's Dauldin every 3-4 hrs. This stuff is
10-15X's stronger than morphine and even with this I still take a few MS
IR's 30's when the pain becomes unbarable. The pressure inside my crotch
groin area extends to the mid section of my Left Butt and goes out my
left Hip. I spend at least 2-3 hrs a day crying in pain.

My sense is that this cancer MUST be moving. and I might have cancer in
my bones?

Please pray for me I can stand this pain much longer. I feal I might do
something rash if it can't be controlled. and my wife knowes what I mean
by rash.

Advanced cancer can cause that. Also could be that you need that
radiotherapy that Steph's been suggesting for the stent situation. See what
the MRI says. If there's nothing new and if you're not going to be able to
get to radiotherapy, then it's probably best that you get hospice involved,
for home care. Apparently an assessment takes about an hour, but yours
might take quite a bit longer.

When you get the MRI result, ask the oncologist if he knows (or has someone
who can help you wade through hospice choice and/or an RN home assessment? )
of the best person to help you at home, who I assume will speak Spanish as
well.

Because of your medication history and the stents, you want to be explaining
all this to them while you are still lucid and before the pain gets worse.
Hopefully they can help get you more comfortable and hopefully answer your
questions.

SO sorry this is happening.

In addition to what J said, here's a couple of things we've tried - My mom
has lymphodema. We massage her leg from foot up to thigh, helping the fluid
move back to her body. Its not a 100% thing, but it does relieve some of the
swelling and pressure. Sometimes soaking in a tub of water (spa/hot tub or
deep bath tub) has been helpful for the pain, but not the swelling, much.

Maybe add a couple of cups of Epsom salts if you soak? Very
inexpensive & can ease pain better than warm water alone.

That's an unbelievable amount of painkiller. Probably all that you
thiink and dp revolves around the elimination of pain. This is the
pits when it comes to cancer, the pain. My understanding of hospice is
that their first and foremost concern is the elimination of pain. I'm
on 4 ccs of dilaudin every 4 hours (+ decadron - a steroid) and it
barely does the job. 10 ccs !! Yikes. You are a walking pain machine.
I don't understand how they could discharge you while you are still
enduring excruciating pain. I'd prefer to be "put under"with some
kind of knock out med.

Referral to pain specialist might be appropriate. In the meantime a course
of steroids (starting on dexamethasone 8-12mg daily for 3 days) might give
you some relief while waiting the results of any investigations.

My wife speaks veery good english so a translator won't be needed. My
new MRI with sedation is on the 10th, I'm also seeing an eye Dr on the
9th my vision is acting up my be conected to cancer might not. everyone
in my family wears glasses. And the Pain clinic called we are making
argagements for the trial and preperations for the infussion pump.

I don't think I am that far gone I need hospice as of yet. When I can't
walk or see I call them in then. There's still a bit of fight in me left.

That's Ok just to add I have had 4500 units of radiation for my rectal
cancer I can't have any more radiation near my pelvis or groin. I've
been told it would cause more damage then good.

Fig I'm already doing that it works abit I do it every other day 2lbs
and 40 Gallons of hot water in the tub. For about 30-45 minutes.

Hi:

You want some scarry notes try this.

12-16 Mg Dauldin pills every 4 hrs plus 1-3 30 Mg Morphine IR (instant
release) plus I have other meds to go along with this. Adavan for my
nerves Avergae person dose .25-1.0Mg me 2.0-4.0Mgs every 4-6 hrs.
Regular dose is 1 dilll every 8-10hrs. In the Hospital if they use
morphine via IV we start at 25CCs every 3-4 hrs Plus 1-1.5Mgs Phentenyl
every 6-8 hrs plus and MS IR 30 or 60 if needed.

Very shorly I will be getting a Infussion pump implanted in my abdomen
injecting Dauldin cousin in Micro gram amounts directly into my spinal
column.

Steroids don't work on me very well except 1 I am on Depo-Testsrtone
200mg/ml 1cc every 16 days. I have Klinefelter's syndrome XXXY
Karyutype. My body doesn't make enough testo for me to properly
fucntion. I have been on these shots for nearly 30 yrs. and for the past
20 I self inject with a 23 G IM needle into my thigh about 1" down.

The testerone might be increasing your pain, Frank.
Sometimes we have to function (less often) for more quality of life (pain relief)

Do you have to do it in the tub? Could you use a sitz-bath & do it more
often (& more easily & a lot less water)?

I apologize in advance if I'm totally (& offensively) off-track -- I don't
know much (anything?) about rectal cancer. But I do have experience with a
sitz-bath for other problems. (& try spelling that to the pharmacy clerk,
loudly & clearly, *&* explaining whatthehell you are talking about, with a
line of people behind you!)

He's still in wait mode for his pain pump but "they" did some type of trial
treatment to his spine.
The pain varies. That's the update, until he updates us here.

Hi All the reslut of the CT scan was negative. this past week we did the
epidral to the spinal cord. Getting that device into my back after the
local Hurt. ASn it was so scarryy. I was shakking and appologizing to
everyone. I was sore for an hr then the meds kicked in Hydro Morphine
(0.25Mgs) per Hr plus a bollus of .5Mgs to start with. it took a while
to get ballanced and rested. ounce tha was done I still hade some pain
he (my Dr) raised rg dossage 50% above base to .50Mgs per mil per Hr
into my spinal cord.

we discoverederd though this dosssage was stopping my entiestines frim
working. Proper dossages would do it right. So we returnee to .025Mgs
per mil per hrAbove this for breakthrough pain 1-2 15Mg MS conation IR
every 2-3 hrs

We went into the hospital om Monday Morning. Actually left at noon time
arrived a bit before 4pm go done at 3pm Sunday. left around 7Pm. 225
Miles from my doorstep to the front door of the hospital.

Now here's some weirf and unexplainable stuff.

While I was at the hospital I was given Flomax to helo me urinate
better. I was having a hard tine dooing thta for the past 3 weeks with
all that super bad pain. ounce the flowmax sarted the pain went away!!

Now That I am home I take 200-350 mgs morphime a day. sometimes less. My
swelling in my left foot and left legg have also gown down.

Tha bad news I have the High res MRI today with sedation to help keep me
queit


There's a mass behind my bladder about the size of my fist about 4.5" in
dia it id directly in line and behind my bladded. this may explain why I
can't go and alll the pain I;ve beeen having. My Oncologist is
checkiecing to see if it can be removed or if it is ditectly ref.


My daily pain is 10-30% of what an average day is. I'm not taking much
pain meds. sorry for the bad spelling I'm really tiered been all of the
pasr few days. Give me a day to sleep and Ill be more coherient Sat to

Radiotherapy is probably the best treatment for that

That rarely means that further palliative radiation is not possible. Make
sure you get an opinion from a radiation doc.
