Default muscle injury and chemo

Hi!

Can anyone tell me if I might be more predisposed to straining or
injuring my muscles while exercising on chemotherapy?

I'm on ABVD (Hodgkin's stage 1a, Nodular sclerosing); and I play the
drums A LOT. my left arm started hurting a few days ago after playing; I
took a break, went to the ER to get checked out (just in case, all is well).
Today I did some drumming again and my left arm hurts again. Is this
'normal' to some extent? Will my muscles regenerate a bit more slowly and
be more prone to strain/injury while on ABVD? Maybe I should chill out for
a while :-)

Cheers;

The most common side effect is fatigue.
I imagine chemo can cause muscle fatigue, since it's systemic.
I would suggest you take it easy, you don't want a muscle tear.
The rule is "if it hurts, don't do it" and/or get professional advice, probably
sports medicine.

Hi cy,

I remember having some similar issues. According to my Onc, mine were
caused from phlebitous <sp?> due to direct infusions. I did not have a
port for treatments, they just found a new vein everytime. This is what
caused my arm pains, especially after excercise, for up to a week after
chemo. The "D" portion (dacarbazine) of the ABVD is what caused most of
my troubles. Best thing I found to deal with it, was moist hot
compresses (I used a heating pad cranked up as high as I could stand
it) for a few hours at a time. Sorry to tell you this, but I just had
to chill out until I was finished with chemo in order to keep the pain
down. It took a few weeks after chemo before I started being able to do
things pretty well again.
