Whoohoo!
(I've just discovered that that word is a euphamism for sex in some
areas. To me it just means 'hooray' - but hooray sounds so unbelievably
tame that I'm going to stick with whoohoo. Of course, if you want to
interpret it in any other way I can't stop you... <g>)

Hanging in there. Still waiting for the mouth sores to heal. Still not
tasting much of anything. I have found some things I can eat and have
started eating more solids. Kraft Easy Mac and Cheese is one of them.
Hoping the calories will help keep my weight up. Haven't given up my Boost.
I have an appointment with the ENT next week to check the sores. We'll
be in Houston to see the RO, the Onco-dentist and the gastro surgeon in
mid-November. Thinking of calling local County Health and getting a flu
shot. Haven't had one since I was a kid, but I think my immune system
has probably taken a hit and I should. Anyone have any thoughts???
The open wound is closing nicely. I'm truly amazed at the capabilities
of the human anatomy. What was several inches deep when they opened it
is down to less than half an inch deep. I'm slowly regaining strength
and have been trying to get the weeds out of the landscaping one small
section at a time each day.
I went to the local writers' club (professional and amateur) meeting on
Saturday (DH drove me). We are publishing a book next month and I'm
proud to have a story and a poem in it. It's called "Tales Told at
Midnight in The Rio Grande Valley" and it's ghost stories and
supernatural themed stuff that's set in this location. Some is based on
local lore. My story is based on a newspaper clipping about a local
museum being haunted. We are going to do public readings and book
signings. I'm excited about it. It has bouyed my spirits.
I'd like to get out more, but I'm so self conscious of the ostomy bag.
DH says no one can see it because I'm wearing baggy clothes. (I lost
over 20 pounds since the surgery. Everything is baggy) I'm just insecure
about it. I am worried that I'll poop in it and I'll stink, though I
don't seem to go during the day. (Sorry if this was too yucky)
I'm thinking of doing some shopping and buying some of those tops like
the teenagers wear that almost look like maternity tops. They would hide
the outline of the top of the bag.
Taking care of the wound and the ostomy is very time consuming but I
don't have much else to do.
I'm hoping that the gastro surgeon will give me a close date to put me
back together. I know the ostomy probably saved my life, but I don't
like it. My body has been tampered with too much and I feel violated.
I'm sure a lot of you feel the same way.
So other than being slightly crazy and behind in gardening tasks, I'm
doing much better, thank you. <g>

As far as the ostomy bag, Have you tried wear was high underpants to secure
the ostomy? I am sure nobody would even know but if you output is lower in
the am then try to schedule activities then. Hopefully you will get the ok
to be re-hitched. Alex |

You're sounding a lot more chirpy than you were - hopefully there's some
light at the end of the tunnel now. My mother had an appointment the
other day and reports that they are "very pleased" with her. She's
still using the food supplements for nutrition but is getting better
daily with the things she can actually manage to eat.
It can be done Janet, honestly it can. Not long to go now and you'll be
fine I'm sure.

She's remarkable! Completely settled in. Made a life-long slave of the
Bichon who was, until Marcella's arrival, the "only child." My son and
DIL are thrilled with her. My daughter, the new aunt, reports that she's
a wonderful baby and that DIL is a great mom. Mom works at a day care
school so Marcella goes to baby day care with her. She's just taken the
changes in stride. She's eating some solid foods now and is thriving. My
son puts her on the phone and she laughs for me. It warms my heart so. I
can't wait for them to come and visit. I have to get them a digital camera!
Hugs to your Mum from me and hugs to you, too.

Iffy proposition. If your immune system doesn't work well, it won't
produce antibodies as a result of the immunization. In the short
term, get a prescription for Tamiflu.
From blood counts, your Dr. should be able to give you a good idea of
the state of your immune system. Ask him about flu shots.
To be honest flu shots are a crap shoot. A decision is made in the
spring about what the likely flu strains will be in the fall and
winter. If they guess right, it works well. If they guess wrong, and
the flu that propogates isn't one of the strains they guessed, the
vaccine is not especially effective.

Oh Janet, she sounds wonderful! Children, especially young children,
are so resilient, aren't they.
<Very off topic aside, but it's close to home today>
Having said that, today has been rather horrible here in the
south Wales valleys. It's the 40th anniversary of the most ghastly
mining-related disaster we've ever had, and there's a very small
generation of people around my age who will never recover from it
completely. They are the ones who survived.
I don't know why I'm telling you all this, except that when I lived in
Cardiff one of my friends was a survivor from Aberfan. 30 years on she
still hadn't recovered; I don't know whether she has yet, 10 years
later. http://www.red-dragon-wales.com/Spec...es/Aberfan.htm
There's a link to http://www.nuff.ox.ac.uk/politics/aberfan/chap1.htm

A friend of mine was rather ill a few years back *because* of the 'flu
jab. I'd be inclined to ask a doctor (one who knows you and knows about
the effects the various drugs have on the immune system) before going
ahead with the jab.

Did that a while back. That may be a large part of why my taste has changed
so badly; the last time I quit (for eleven whole days!), in the eighties,
everything -- EVERYTHING -- tasted like excrement, literally. As a result
I ate next to nothing, five or six hundred calories a day, and gained 13
pounds in the 11 days. As of now, very few things taste the way I
remember them. I'm sure the radiation had something to do with it, but
judging by the radical change in taste from cessation alone I'd blame
90% of it on quitting.

Did you take any drugs while you were quitting? Specifically
anti-depressants? They can alter your taste.
Radiation knocked out my taste buds. Can't hardly taste anything except
sometimes on the very first taste.
As for metabolism, it takes years for it to get back to where it was
when you were smoking. I know this as a fact. I, too, had to cut my
calorie consumption way down in order to lose weight.
Since the ostomy surgery and 2 weeks in the hospital, I am needing over
1,000 calories to keep my weight at a paltry 106. If I didn't have a
bump in front of my tummy from the ostomy, I'd look like one of those
starving models <g> (apologies to other lands. I can't do stones or kilos)
Don't start smoking again. It isn't worth it. Be a little chubby and
healthy and happy.

Thanks. It was a bit grim in the valleys what with the rain and all the
memories floating about. I felt profoundly thankful that I don't have a
TV - although I'd have found all the documentaries interesting it's a
bit close to home here and in the main valleys people don't move around
in the same way as London-born folk do. Most of the over-45s here were
here at the time it happened and there were still mines open locally. I
get the impression that although it was a couple of valleys away it
might just as well have been anywhere in the south Wales coal field.
Everyone seems to see it as 'their' tragedy.
And now for something completely different, to lighten the mood a
little. Do you need a new mobile phone? Do you want something eye-
catching and 'different'? Do you occasionally hanker after the 'good
old days'? You need one of these.... http://www.firebox.com/?dir=firebox&...oduct&pid=1044

I have friends that grew up in coal mining towns in the US. They all
have similar stories. I completely understand.
I've seen Wales only on TV and it is so beautiful. Someday I hope to
take an RV (caravan) tour through the British Isles and get to see the
countryside that most tourists don't see.

My DH would have loved one of those! Our first mobile phone was one of
those bulky bag phones and it had a regular receiver. It took him a
while to get used to the little cell phones. He still hasn't figured out
how to retrieve voice mail and we've had the same service for over 6
years! He's not dumb (PhD in education). We call it technologically
challenged. <g>

Never mind the caravan, Janet. Most of the small roads and mountain roads

Um. Most of our roads won't easily take an RV. Most of our roads won't
easily take a small tow-along caravan. They're not wide enough and
they're not straight enough. Save yourself the hassle and get a couple
of decent suitcases; hire a small car this side of the Pond; arm
yourself with a list of B&Bs (Bed 'n' Breakfast) and Inns (pubs offering
accommodation) and see the UK /properly/, from the sort of perspective
that's only possible with the smallest vehicle you can yet away with.
Oh, and make sure you have sensible footwear. The best bits of the UK
aren't anywhere near tracks, never mind roads.
Open invitation here by the way - just let me know in good time to
exhume some floor and a bed.

Actually, I was a little edgy through this scan too. I only took 2mg of Xanax, figuring I hadn't had any in a long time, and it wasn't enough.
But I made it.
