Default Off topic from Joe46er re Forte AGENT

Just a quickie OT if no one minds I promise not to make this into a
big deal. I just installed the latest 2.4 version of Forte and somehow
I configured it wrong. I went to the Forte FAQ and the Forte newsroup
but I'm too much of an idiot to understand the suggestions.

Here's my problem. When I post a new messaage like this one, it will
appear fine except that the "from" column will show
46erjoe@nospam.com. I would like for it to just show "46erjoe."

A seonc problem is that when I do a follow-up "Re" , what shows is
"46erjoe@nospam" as the header. It should show "Re: Off topic from
Joe.. etc" but it doesn't.

I am able to communicate like this with you folks, but it sure looks
odd. Maybe one of you using Forte could look at your Tools -> Options
-> Pesona or Display and give me some idea what should be in those
boxes.

Okay, I'll shutup for now and check out how this looks as I respond to
my own post.

Not to me. Except that you're top-posting. <g>

I just looked at a screen shot of Agent's menu.
And there's a View on the menu.
If you click on that, is there an option "Header" and how many choices do
you have there?
ALT+V is a shortcut I have to get to the View menu
Mine's netscape but they're often standardized shortcuts for windows
systems.

Pesona? Sounds like a profile?
Maybe supposed to set one up ?

Joe, I'm using Agent, although version 3.3, while you have 4.2, so
there could be some differences. In my version, when I go to Tools ->
Options -> Personas I have there in the main window two lines for the
personas I've created. I use one persona for the newsgroups and the
other one for emails, if I want to email with the Agent (I don't
usually, but use Thunderbird for emailing instead :-). If you have no
lines in that main window, you have no persona, and you need to create
one. This happens by clicking "Add" -button on the right hand side of
the main window in the personas setup. "Add Persona" -window opens and
you have to fill in the name for the persona in the "Name" -field,
which could by anything, and also either the field "Email Address" or
the field "Full Name" to show the email and name on the header of your
message. So if you want only "46erjoe" to show in the header, put that
to the "Full Name" -field and leave "Email Address" -field empty, or
vice versa, put it to "Email Address" -field and leave "Full Name"
-field empty. Then you still have to tick one of more options under
"Allowed Message Types". If you are going to use this persona for
newsgroup posting, you have to tick at least the option "Usenet
messages"

If on the other hand you already have at least one line and therefore
at least one persona in the persona main window, you can select a line
(a persona), and then press "Edit" -button on the right hand side
(instead of "Add" -button), then "Edit Persona" -window opens. It's
exactly like "Add Persona" -window, fill the fields the same way as
described above for the "Add Persona" -window.

As for your second problem, it seems that you don't have it. Your
reply message's header is correctly "Re: Off topic from
Joe.. etc", but when you open a thread in Agent, Agent shows the
header only for the first message, form other messages it shows only
the poster. But if you open up your second message, you can see that
it's header is correct.

I have to correct the above advice. Although you can leave "Email
Address" -field empty, the news servers will then not usually accept
your message, when you try to send it. Therefore, put formally correct
email address into the email field. Apparently you already have at
least one persona and "46erjoe@nospam" in its "Email Address" -field,
otherwise you probably would not be able to post. But it seems that
your "Full Name" -field is now empty, so put "46erjoe" there, if
that's what you want to show as your name. If you don't want email
addresses to be validated, uncheck option "Validate email addresses"
in Tools -> Options -> Posting Messages -> Composition Window. If you
don't want the poster's email address showing in the header of
message, uncheck option "Show Author's fulle email address" in Tools
-> Options -> Display - Message List Pane.

No, it's ok, Joe. I took these four lines from its full header (which
you don't normally see, but which comes wisible by pressing the letter
"h", while viewing a message):

From: 46erjoe@nospam.com
Newsgroups: alt.support.cancer
Subject: Re: Off topic from Joe46er re Forte AGENT
Message-ID: <fe1n235q9ahulq9eiokqds9acvn03amt1k@4ax.com>
References: <4s0n23d0n68smq97ok9sfejljuni69fkhc@4ax.com>
X-Newsreader: Forte Agent 4.2/32.1118

The subject is correct as you can see.

Joe, could you spcify the context, where there is nothing (blank)
space under "Author?". Is it in a posted message or its header or in
Agent options setup (where there?) or where?

Hit H (when you're viewing a message)
It's a toggle. If you want it back to less, in the header, hit H again.

I think Joe wants to see the following (at the least)

Subject: Re: Off topic from Joe46er re Forte AGENT

Isn't there a way to set one of 3 views in Forte Agent?
I have 3 - All (headers), Normal (headers - above) and Brief (headers)

The H I just described to you is the old way.
Apparently agent.ini can be modified. (in Notepad or Wordpad)
Agent has to be closed when you do this.
First make a copy of it to a different folder. (in case you mess up the
original).
Then don't do anything more (about that) for the time being.

Back in Agent...
Is there a Help | Index | Headers ?

You're still showing your email address instead of your screen name.
Help | Index | Personas

Help | Index | keyboard shortcuts.

Help | Index | killfiles

Well, I think I'll just close down this thread. I shoudln't care how
it looks, only that I'm able to get messages back and forth and that'
what counts.

In my Agent I see now only "45erjoe" in the header (I've disabled the
option "Show Author's full email address" in Tools
-> Options -> Display - Message List Pane). So it seems that you have
now filled the "Full Name" -field in Tools ->
Options -> Personas -> "Edit Persona" with "45erjoe" as I suggested.
Everything seems to be working as it should be.

It's the old way and very much also the current way.

>Apparently agent.ini can be modified. (in Notepad or Wordpad)

It can, but it's not recommended, unless it's absolutely necessary and
you know exactly what you are doing. Normally you should not make the
full message header visible, it's disturbing. You can toggle full
header display by pressing "h", as I mentioned earlier. It can't get
any easier.

There is normally no reason to modify ini-files. I've only needed to
do that when I've moved Agent's data files (messages, index, etc.)
into a different directory. Modifying ini-files is _so_ stone age user
interface- and tehcnology-wise. Trust me. I've worked in computer
software development for over 30 years :-). And used Agent for nearly
10 years now I guess :-).
