Default Our friend (cancer type)

It is small cell lung cancer. I don't know anything about it. He is
getting chemo right now. He wants us to bring him a milkshake. I just hope
he makes it through this. We are not ready to lose such a good person. All
he has is his dog. H really misses that dog. He's just too big to sneak
into the hospital or I would! His ex wife isn't getting back together with
him. She'll just take care of his needs...Love, Chris

I hope this helps, Chris,

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC)

* Undifferentiated small cell or "oat cell"
* 20-25% of lung cancers
* Generally small and round, or oval, or shaped like oat grains
* Most aggressive of all lung cancers
* Many patients have distant metastases at time of diagnosis even if primary
is small
* Generally not treated surgically
* Multidrug chemotherapy integrated with radiation therapy is the usual
treatment
* Long term cure possible (20%), if tumour is localized to the chest
* Prophylactic brain radiotherapy usually employed in curative therapy

Hi Chris,
Would the hospital loan him portable oxygen to "visit" a "family member", once a
week or more, who is unable to come to the hospital.
Then you could go with his wife, stay with the dog, while the wife brings him
down to the vehicle to visit with his dog (weather and his "performance"
permitting).

SCLC is staged differently from other cancers.
Instead of Stage I or II or III or IV, SCLC is staged Limited or Extensive.

The US Guilelines for it are here
http://www.nccn.org/professionals/ph...s/PDF/sclc.pdf
I would think that he's considered "Poor Performance", but not sure.
Have a look at Page 12 - shows the differences in chemo treatments between
Limited and Extensive.
Later in the document, they also explain the TNM system for SCLC
The number of cycles differs between each. you could compare to the number of
cycles they're proposing for your friend.
Might help although, under "poor performance", they also mention "individualized
treatments".
I don't know if this will help or not, but here it is. Not as long as the one
for Lymphoma
Only 31 pages for this one.
Hugs
J

Hospitals do not lend oxygen,( it is needs a prescription and needs to
be dispensed by a home health agency) ....just like hospitals do not
dispense drugs from the inpatient pharmacies. If a patient is well
enough to go home they are considered well enough to be discharged
from the hospital.
Dogs with prior approval have been known to visit the hospital,
although it could be stressful for the dog,

Chris, I wish your friend well ...Alex
