Poniard reports positive results for lung cancer drug
Associated Press 04.23.08, 3:50 PM ET
SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Poniard Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Wednesday
its lung cancer drug picoplatin continued to extend patient survival in
mid-stage studies.
The company said the latest results confirmed older findings in patients
with small cell lung cancer who did not respond to chemotherapy or whose
cancer progressed despite other initial treatments.
Cancer patients taking picoplatin lived a median of 27 weeks, the company
said, compared with 14 weeks of survival for patients undergoing standard
care.
Poniard said it plans to continue testing its drug in late-stage trials
with a launch goal of 2010.

Sponsored by: Poniard Pharmaceuticals
Information provided by: Poniard Pharmaceuticals
ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT00465491
Purpose
Picoplatin is a new type of platinum drug that has been investigated in
several clinical trials, and may provide an improved safety profile over
current treatment options. This study is designed to compare the efficacy
and safety of picoplatin plus Best Supportive Care (BSC) with BSC alone.
Best Supportive Care includes care and treatment to optimize the comfort
of patients and their ability to function, as well as to minimize the
side-effects of anti-cancer treatments.
Official Title: A Randomized, Controlled Phase III Trial of Picoplatin
and BSC Versus BSC Alone in Patients With Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC),
Refractory or Progressive Within Six Months of Completing First-Line,

With Solid Tumors
This study is currently recruiting participants.

ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT00465725
Purpose
Picoplatin is a new platinum-based chemotherapy drug that has been studied
in a variety of cancers. Phase 1 and 2 studies have demonstrated that
picoplatin may be effective in patients whose cancer returns or does not
improve after treatment with chemotherapy. In these studies, picoplatin
was administered intravenously. A capsule containing picoplatin has been
formulated. This study will investigate the activity of the oral capsule
in humans. Participants with advanced solid tumors will be enrolled.
