Hi Laurie and the rest of the gang.

I took Rob up to Chapel Hill on Friday as he was all mixed up on his seizure
medications. Turns out I'd been inadvertently poisoning him. The Dr had
lowered his depakote and increased his dilantin. He shortly had severe
problems with balance, dizziness, and so forth. His Dr. was in Disney World
with her family, and, after the number they did on him in the hospital, I
was not willing to call the on call doctor. So I put the depakote back and
forgot to reduce the dilantin in return. Rob was at a toxic level for
dilantin (31 instead of the normal 10-20) as a result. Depakote increases
dilantin levels. So his Dr has kept him at the original depakote dosage,
but decreased his dilantin so that things will level out. For those who are
newer to this than even I am, depakote and dilantin are anti-seizure
medications. Once most brain surgeries are done, the patient will be on
anti-seizure medications for the rest of their lives.

Rob's Drs in Chapel Hill had put him on an insulin regime for his diabetes.
They gave me a flat amount to be given no matter what, though they did say
that if his blood sugar levels were below 100, I could get away without
giving him his insulin shot. This made me really nervous and I threw it at
the Dr when we were up there. I now have a sliding scale to work with. I'm
happy with that.

We're still working on getting the VA to pay for Rob's wheel chair ramps and
stair rails. They sent me paperwork so that I can justify them paying for
the work. I figure that the VA will tell us no on getting a handicapped
accessible vehicle after I send them Rob's death certificate. They are not
good about taking care of the veterans they are supposed to take care of.

What a complete mess, Pam. I take Depakote, but I know nothing about it
other than I'm bipolar and that's why I take it. I didn't know it could be
used for other kind of treatments! And what's interesting is, I have
non-epileptic seizures, which I have not had since February (when I started
the Depakote)!!

Gosh, girlie... you're going through so much!! I would be so afraid of
messing things up... but then, I think of medicating my mom, and I had it
down like clock work. At first I carried a pear shaped timer around w/me...
but w/in two days, I knew the ropes just by lookin' at my watch.

Such a shame about the VA. There's a few older men I know in a class I
take, and they *constantly* fight w/the VA over meds and things. And if you
read about people in the chronic pain news group, they are in the same boat.
It's sad... very sad.

I hope you're hanging in there, Pam. Give the furkids extra scritches from
you and from me!!

Just dropped in to tell you that I am reading your posts and thinking of you
guys there.
Oh sigh, bureaucracy or intentional "make it difficult" to get reimbursed.

I'm pleased to hear that they've given you tools on the medications, Pam.

Thanks for your post. Very helpful for others and/or whose loved ones have brain
tumors
