Default quacks - how do you handle them here?

Hi all,

lurking through the last years, I noticed, there are a lot of quacks
trying to sell their BS in this NG - most of them recognizable at the
first glance, some though dropping in very subtile with sort of own
healing stories...

J, I know you're the "manager" in here, but I'd like to know opinions
from others here as well. I'm a quack fighter in Germnany since ages,
and it really strikes me how these guys try to profit from cancer
patient's last "hopes" :-(((((

It's just disgusting. What do you all think of this? Any suggestions
on how to get them off serious platforms? Igoring them might be best
shot - anyone in here better ideas?

Thanks and bless you all...

Best,

Marianne

Best thing is to just ignore them. Abusing them will only encourage them.
Just hope that for preying on desperate people they get cancer
themselves, preferably the most painful and vicious kind. Alas, it's
probably not real nice to wish cancer on someone, and I don't feel real
comfortable doing it, but these scumbags make me so angry that wishing
cancer on them has a therapeutic affect on me :-) I've already lasted a
year longer than I should have so maybe there's something in it :-)

Apologies to anyone this message upsets.

Advertising? Some's reported. Have to know which is worth trying and how.

If they get too persistent, I instruct people (how) to filter them.
Quacks? Steph and/or I one-liner them.

Personally, I ignore them. ( the spammers), when anyone responses to them it
only gives the spammers hope that someone is reading the posts. I have
noticed that the participation amongst people who have had a cancer
diagnosis is down, I am guessing cancer patients have availed themselves of
other internet outlets than have clinicians who cite there credentials,
people use their real names and have a system of moderation. That is only
my guess.

It's best to ignore them, mostly. But occasionally I have to bite

Please don't use that here, DLU.
There are people, on other newsgroups, in litigation with/against him or
vice versa.
You'll attract their contant "yammering" about him here, so please don't.
unfortunate, because his message to cancer patients is important.
I don't know why he doesn't hand it over to the FTC or FDA (which they hate
as well)

When people ask about alternative or complementary therapies, I have other
web pages, that aren't involved in such "troubles".
This is one of them
www.bccancer.bc.ca/HPI/UnconventionalTherapies/

The FTC claims to be "targeting false and unsubstantiated health claims on
the Internet through Operation Cure.All"
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcam...all/index.html
However, their reporting form seems to be geared towards those who have
paid and realized their mistake later (or die) and there's probably not
enough documentation or the loved ones probably don't know about them.
..
Neither of them (FDA and FTC) probably don't know of the ones that appear
on newsgroups. I have info on many of them. Some are archived here, some
Paul has.

It is a good source of reference. One can pursue these individuals
further. Just because the owner of the web page is involved in a suit
does not nullify its value.
I do not think you can find any one on this site who does not deserve to
be there.

I mostly respond with information, explaining why I believe the quacks are
untrustworthy. Cancer sufferers are nowadays swamped with quack advice
and propaganda. There will be a few on any newsgroup who appreciate a
reasoned, contrary viewpoint, if only for reassurance that they are not
likely to be nissing out on anything..

Jacques - and anyone else who sent their thoughts,

thanks for your replies. I'd just decided to answer this one, because
it contains some of the tabu feelings we all might share but not talk
about.

First of all: I agree with Peter [Message-ID:
<13kh4v0a0h14i37@corp.supernews.com>] best would be to encounter these
creatures with reasoned and proved contrary informations. But it's a
hell of a sysiphus work. They're not receptive to any kind of
reasonable arguing. (Note that right after I started this thread,
there was this spammer spitting out his noni juice campaign in here
[Message-ID:
<d0195241-de7c-460c-bd89-15a87d66c6bb@e6g2000prf.googlegroups.com>]

Second, I guess I'll just adapt Steph's behaviour, ignoring most of
the crap and bite occasionally [Message-ID:
<nlR1j.35347$PE.18835@pd7urf1no>].

Now, Jacques, as to your thoughts:

jacques <not@hotmail.com> wrote:

>Just hope that for preying on desperate people they get cancer

Hard words and whishes, but understandable! Thank you for speaking
them out that openly (many people might one moment or the other think
this way, but don't dare to speak it out). Reasonably, this sounds
like eye to eye revanche which correlates with moral and education.
We're talking about "reasonable" here... These quacks give it a shit.
It's them who create these bitter feelings! (Not only them, there are
a lot of ignorants all over the world, cancer is way beyond any
justice anyway!)

>I've already lasted a
>year longer than I should have so maybe there's something in it :-)

Jacques, I wish you will go on topping all stats and prognosis! I
assume, you underwent all kinds of chemo et al. to have achieved this
and that you yourself decide what you feel working best for you!
You're in my thoughts, take care of yourself!

Well, now back to all: Sorry for my late reply. My neighbour's husband
passed away last night. He was diagnosed in September with a colon
tumor, got surgery done, followed by a hell of a lot of complications.
His major fear was chemotherapy - but he even didn't get this far. No
chance at all. Maybe "Noni juice" will be a great relief to console
his griefing wife with her loss - it works for everything!? :-(

Best,

Marianne

Oh Sisyphus - an uphill climb. That it was, especially when the newsgroup
was bombarded by many at a time.
Resulted in long "arguing" threads with some humor as well, in them. But it
wears me out; many are the same people, over and over and people wee getting
upset and leaving. Just get finished with one thread, and there they are in
a different thread. So the tactic of instructing people of who and how ( and
why) to filter them has worked the best. People are welcome to visit
misc.health.alternative and watch Peter, Jeff and a few others counter their
claims over there.

Yes, if it's not one it's another. Hard to believe people would think noni
juice would cure theie cancer, but some people do beleieve the strangest
things.
There was one fella claiming grape juice (or the ingredient in it) extended
his mother's life.
If something's in clinical trials at nccam.nih.gov/clinicaltrials/ , I tell
them to come back in 5 - 10 years when we can see the results.

Sure,
if it's a cure all, I sometimes tell people: think about it folks, nothing
can cure all.
No such thing as a natural cure. But if the "seller" argues back, drop to
ignore/block their posts.

There's one crossposter that we ignore; replying to him often results in his
bombarding the newsgroup with more "articles' which he thinks defends his
point of view and then degrading to his cursing posts.
Crossposts sometimes don't get responses. Some I reply to here, but trim out
the other newsgroups; works for some.
Some do, continue getting replies. If they go on and on, I have a few
tactics that I try to dissuade them from continuiing.
(which I don't discuss) The tactic depends on who I'm replying to, the
topic and a number of things.
J
