Default Question

One of my teachers friends has a sister that was dx with a malignant
plumb-sized tumor in her breast two weeks ago. The onc. has not found any
lymph node involvement, but it's the fast-growing type cancer like my
husband has.

The patient asked her dr. if they could just go on and remove her breast,
get rid of all of it since the cancer hasn't spread.

Her onc. said that first they would do chemo (six rounds) to shrink the
tumor and then do surgery because he said it has been found that removal of
the breast isn't as effective anymore as just removal of the tumor itself.

It seems that if she wants the mastectomy, why not go on and alleviate the
problem without becoming sick from chemo. I'm just wondering what thoughts
are on this.

I jotted down some notes my friend gave me: her sister has already gotten
the portacath and is prepared for aggressive chemo.

Notes:

HER2 - aggressive chemo and radiation
adriamyacin & cyclophosomide) q2wks for 4 cycles
Then taxol or taxolore & herceptin q2wks for 4 cycles
Then surgery and radiation.
Then on herceptin for one yr.

Cure rate from her onc is 70 % to 80%.

She said that one of these chemos is called something like chemo magic,
which goes straight to the tumor and not affecting the healthy cells around
it.

Have any of you heard of this?

The patient is up-to-date on chemo and cancer. She works at St. Jude in
Memphis.

I told her sister to direct her to this ng, and she said that she already
knew about it and had heard great comments about it, so you guys are
well-known, if you didn't know that already.

I can relay any messages from you to my friend for her sister and maybe
she'll pop in here when she finishes preparing to leave her job for the
chemo regimen.
