Default Question

A friend, sent me an email yesterday, and I have a question about it, if you
all don't mind. The following is an excerpt:

Email:

"I had to go and get a CT scan of my kidneys because the doctor told me that
I might have stones and they found a tumor instead. I go to a specialist on
the 2nd of July. Please pray that it is operable and curable. They did
tell me that is is cancer, carcinoma."

Okay, back to me again. Does carcinoma mean that it's a malignant tumor? And
can they determine that from a CT scan and no other tests?

Thanks,
Giuditta

Apparently so. I have a friend who recently had a kidney out due to a 3 cm
tumor found incidently on rib x-rays (he had a 4-wheeler wreck, playing).
Evidently they do not biopsy renal cancers. He is doing very good, no
chemo, no radiation.

Yes, sort of.

Carcinoma in the loose sense is just another word for "malignant
tumor" aka "cancer". WRT a CT, malignancy is presumed if the mass
"enhances" when a contrast agent is added (given in an IV) during
the CT scan session.

They didn't biopsy so they don't know for sure it is carcinoma in
the strict sense: a tumor with a specific histology. With many
tumors, complete surgical removal without any prior biopsy is the
standard of treatment. That avoids some risk of spilling cancer
cells during a biopsy and hence promoting metastasis.

So the next step would be surgery, followed by pathology report
(to determine the histology), then other treatments depending on
what the pathology report says.

Carcinoma is a cancer arising from epithelial tissues like skin, bowel or
breast
