| | | Question to the group? My neice is scheduled ofr a mastectomy this week and now they are
considering removing her ovaries at the same time? Depending on the results
of some tests. I have little to no information. Is this surgery customary?
Seems like a lot for one body to handle.

Betsy, ask on the breast cancer newsgroup.
If you don't want to download posts there, serach their archives or subscribe
here and ask http://talkaboutsupport.com/group/al...cancer.breast/

Some tumors grow faster in response to estrogen. In premenopausal women,
removing the ovaries is sometimes done to eliminate the main source of
estrogen. Surely they would remove those ovaries laparoscopically, which
should add relatively little to the mastectomy operation.

That she is, 44, I believe. Her tubes wer cut/tied 6 years ago.
Where was this surgery when I lost mine? Cakewalk comparred to the mess I
had going. I just thought it was quite a bit for the body to handle at once. |

Removing both ovaries laparoscopically by themselves is most likely an
outpatient operation.

Betsy,
if you have further questions about breast cancer - related surgeries, please go
to the breast cancer newsgroup.
It's off-topic here for many good reasons.

It's an option for young (premenopausal) women.
Whether it's better than tamoxifen or radiation induced ovarian ablation is
open to question |

J,
Sorry to butt in, but as a lurker for over a year, I am interested to know
the reasons that one specific type of cancer is considered OT?
If this post is inappropriate for the group, please feel free to reply
directly .

Too many reasons; too complicated to explain, Patrick.
Trust me; it's been mostly a "working formula" (for the better of the group
and the participants within) for quite some time now.
If Betsy has further questions, and does not want to go to the breast cancer
newsgroup, she's subscribed to sci.med.diseases.cancer and can ask her
questions there. And/or refer her relative to the breast cancer newsgroup.

It would be better if you just answered the question that was asked.
It's a normal question and if you don't want to answer it for the x
time, why not copy and paste from a previous post. Regardless of your
history as a supporter here, I really think it's quite annoying that you
consider yourself a moderator of a newsgroup on usenet, it's just not
done. Get a forum if you want to moderate.

Holy crow! You all cannot answer such a simple question? Alex feels the need
to butt in to offer her "Support" and "Knowledge". I was not asking about
cancer treatment I was asking simply can a body withstand both surgeries?
Hop off your self made pedastels and just answer the darn question. I did
check out the group J suggested and got lost there.

Well, nobody here has had those two surgeries (together) that I can recall
And i just finished searching their archives, two ways, back to 1999 and maybe
found 6 or 7 who had it done, but not together. One had total hysterectomy just
before she was diagnosed. So you probably wouldn't have had much response there
either..(as to experiences of having both done at once). It's Friday, so I guess
she's gotten whatever's she's decided done.
It's not simple.. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/breast-cancer/WO00095
Refer her to the BC newsgroup (but have as much information as possible) and if
she's not newsgroup savvy, have her use http://talkaboutsupport.com/group/al...cancer.breast/ .
And have her get the Susan Love Breast cancer book and read it. Their newsgroup
will tell her to anyway.

I was just asking here because I know there are a lot of women reading and
they have children. I understand the cancer part but I had never heard of
doing both . It was only a question and you sent me somewhere I wasn't
familiar with and I couldn't find squat there. Didn't help if you don't know
how to navigate the group there.
Betcha I won't bother again.

Many people have dual surgery,,,,having your ovaries removed by
laprascope is day surgery, For a mastectomy without reconstruction
they stay in a day or two.
I had three surgeries , mastectomy, breast reconstruction and a breast
reduction all at the same time. Other members of my family have had
concurrent surgery,
Once again good luck with your niece, Alex |

Thankyou but as usual you are missing the point here? Your breast is not
located in the same area as your ovaries are they? They used to do one or
the other but seldom both. I was asking informed women if this is common.
A breast removal, reconstruction and reduction are all usually done together
or some times one is delayed for stretching of the skin. |

The way this actually works may vary from insurance company to insurance
company, and surgeon to surgeon. Doctors' contract with insurance companies
can be quite variable. Doing two or more operations at the same anesthetic,
if done by the same surgeon, may result in the surgeon getting paid only
half for the second operation, or in some cases not getting paid at all for
it. Consequently, he/she may refuse to do the second operation. Generally,
this type of thing doesn't apply if the surgeon doing the second operation
is a different specialty. So, if the breast operation is being done by a
General Surgeon and the oophorectomy by a Gynecologist, these issues don't
usually apply.

Thankyou Doc. I have a hunch my sister and neices are shielding me from any
news.
The surgeon is an Onc Surgeon then I think the reconstructive fella takes
over.
They were waiting on test results re: ovaries so maybe none of this means
anything.
Thanks to HIPPA I can get very little info from the hosp. by phone. I am
ready to take off and just go to Pa. and find them. And would if my Husband
didn't have an appt with his pulmonary Doc Monday. And there is a
Northeaster due here tomorrow.

We are not missing the point. The point is you do not seek answers,
you seek validation of your personal opinion. Well, we are not your
sock puppets.
If it were my body, I would combine the procedures. Just one prep,
just one anesthesia, just one recovery.

Maybe they don't want you to know. Aren't they entitled to privacy.

I am *so* thankful for HIPAA.

Forget it, Betsy [humor] I've had a lot worse than that,
and they weren't accidental. |

OK. Not sure that I appreciate being told that a valid question is too
complicated to explain, but nevertheless, as my original question was made
out of curiosity only, I can accept it.
Didn't mean to start a war of words.
