Race for the Cure organizer jailed on embezzlement charges. [Excerpt]

August 25, 2008

BOISE - Police say the former executive director of Boise’s chapter of
the Susan G. Komen Foundation is in jail – after police say she stole
about $74,000 from the organizer of the Race for the Cure event.

Mary Guinard, 35, of Meridian, was arrested at her Meridian home today.
Boise Police detectives first got a report this morning about the
embezzlement allegations.

Don't ou think what you chose for subject is a bit inflammatory and
does ot serve any good purpose. I feel you shouldhave pointed out it
was local. "Race for the Cure, Boise ID, organizer.....etc... The
way yours read one would suppose it was at the top.....

I think "Race for the Cure" is misleading - it's also used on TV.
I've just spent time looking at sections of their webpage and still don't know
what they do (for others),
except collect money. I assume they're paid out of the donations.

I agree. I wish they shared a fraction of their wealth with other
cancers that have dramatically lower survival rates. 'The season' has
begun & they are still racing & turning the world pink.

Why should an organization formed for the purpose of raising money &
supporting research for one specific kind of cancer change & support
another? Wouldn't this also dilute their message and turn off some of their
supporters?

Do you feel the same way to HIV survivors, that disease get more money than
breast cancer. I do feel the Breast Cancer Awareness has helped many women
by early detection enhance the lower mortality rate. Or are you advocating
for the days where women kept silent about breast cancer and died.

And breast cancer, with a much lower incidence, gets much more funding
than prostate cancer.

Where can I buy a prostate cancer stamp?

How about a colorectal stamp ? Maybe finding the answer to breast
cancer will open the door for answers to the other cancers !

I'll go along with that. All of these diseases have a relationship.
The chemotherapy that my wife is using (for cholangiocarcinoma) is also
used for breast, lung, and pancreatic cancer.

the 'race' is literally about original organized walks and road runs
where each runner/walker solicits monies from family/friends to
'sponsor' the runner based on how many miles/kilometers they do - dollar
a mile or whatever.

participate in a 'race' which raises money - funding the 'race' to fund
research and discover cures

it has proven to be a pretty easy way for whole families, employee
groups, etc. to get involved and also have a bit of fun. while there are
costs associated with putting one of these events on, they can usually
get local businesses to chip in with signage, printing, publicity et al
- thus the cost/benefit ratio of the fundraising costs are actually
fairly low compared to other types of fundraising.

then the foundation uses the monies raised [also from others sources]
for research and support efforts;

http://cms.komen.org/komen/GrantsProgram/index.htm

not everybodies thing, but of itself, works well -

sure is a shame that an employee would take advantage, at least this is
a case where the local board found the problem - went to the police, and
didn't sweep it under the rug - hope it earns jail time.

Paul,
You missed my point. Which cure (or cures) have you heard of in the past 25 years?
(for those who aren't cured by the initial treatment ) and how much money has been
collected, over that same period in the name of cures?

I'm not the only one asking questions.

Those days ended decades ago. People are aware already, already,

I'm not sure what part of their site you were looking at, but from the
Grants section at http://cms.komen.org/komen/GrantsProgram/index.htm

"Since its inception in 1982, we have awarded more than 1,100 breast
cancer research grants totaling more than $400 million. With $1billion
invested to date, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world's largest
source of nonprofit funds dedicated to curing breast cancer at every
stage - from the causes, to the cures, to the pain and anxiety of every
moment in between. We also support and encourage talented young
scientists embarking on careers in breast cancer research. Learn more
about the impact of our training award program. "

I'm sorry you feel it's a con or something.

So they're supporting careers in research.
She's made a career of it (her sister's cancer) herself.

They're supporting *research* -- which obviously has to involve people
doing it. Or do you have some other way to do research than people?
Usually researchers do research as at least part of a career if not the
sole focus; there are many who also do clinical work with patients as
well.

So, in the last 25 years, with all the millions and billions of $$$
collected and researchers, where's the "cures"?
Other than the curable cancers, that Steph's pointed out and early
diagnosis, name me some cures they've found.
I am not necessarily singling out the breast cancer community; I'm taking
issue with the word "cure" and the number of dollars collected and very
little to show for it. ** there have been some
Seems to me there's other diseases and/or causes and/or individuals where
(some of that) money could be put to better use.
Or help people get better care at the GP level, where in many countries,
talking about symptoms, appropriate testing or referrals to specialists, and
family history and screening and risk factors is the starting point. **

** More on those in a while . I have some articles but have to refind them.

Read up on her at wikipedia and ask yourself where she (and the money
collected) was for Susan from Texas or another lady, Fig and I tried to
(find) help for. Was partly blind, knee trouble, having to stay close to
monitor her husband's breathing machine, while she was being harrassed by
neighbors. There's nothing on their webpage for contact to help such
people.
Richest country in the world, all those millions (collected in donations)
and nobody to help such people.

If you don't like the way a non-profit is run, then don't participate in
their events, don't contribute to their coffers, etc. If you feel there
is criminal activity or fraud, complain to the AG in the appropriate
states. Get cozy with an investigative reporter to do an expose.
Don't just complain anonymously that "it's a crock."

Are you in the USA? If so, participate in the current political process
to make changes. Make your voice heard. If not -- didn't I read
somewhere you're in Canada? then don't be so sure that your own
country's way is always so 100% wonderful.

BTW, Wikipedia isn't exactly an authoritative source.
Your "they don't help anybody" screed might have more credibility if you
included cites from the public documents & annual reports of the
organization(s) you denigrate.
