Default Skin cancer advice needed

Hi all,

Been passively reading the group for the past few months, and it has
helped with what I'm going through, but I need some advice. Hope
someone can help!

Back in June, I found a large mole type thing in my pubic hair. It
wasn't there before, though I can give no timeframe on its appearence.
It was about 1cm in diameter, dark brown (reasonably uniformly), pretty
much symmetrically round. Of course, I immedietly panicked and tortured
myself by getting "educating" on the internet, but mercifully found the
courage to go to see my GP the next day (I'm in the UK incidentally).
My GP scoffed at my concerns, and said it was probably fungal and
prescribed a cream. I said that I was concerned about it, and would
really like a referral to a dermatologist. She agreed that this was
reasonable and put it into motion. Of course, the cream didn't help...

The wonders of the NHS kicked into gear and I finally got a
dermatologist appointment 2 months (!) later. In this torturous two
months I kept a close eye on it and it didn't seem to change at all.
When I saw her, the dermatologist said that there was slight colour
variation and because of the speed of appearance, she wanted to be on
the safe side and have it removed.

I had the excession the next week under local and discovered that an
uncommunicative doctor weilding a scalpel above your crotch causes a
degree of shrinkage that the coldest water can't compete with.
Practically felt my balls hit the back of my throat! Anyway, he took it
off and I was left with a cut about 4 or 5cms long so I assume he took
some reasonable margins with it as well. This was six weeks ago and the
area has since healed nicely.

Okay, so here's my problem. I still don't know the diagnosis. I've
diligently called every week, but the results have either not come
back, or the consultant has not looked at them, or something. NHS..
sigh.

Then I called today and the entirely unmedical admin person said that
the results were back and had been looked at, but they hadn't been sent
back to my GP. I asked if dermatology wanted to see me anymore (trying
to get SOME indication of the outcome) and she went and shuffled her
papers to find out. She came back to say that she had been asked to
make another appointment (my heart sank) but for two months down the
line....

So here I am. I'll go to see my GP next week to get the results, but I
have no idea what's happening at the moment. I'm vaguely reassured by
the fact that the next appointment will be two months away, so surely
the consultant can't be THAT worried? On the other hand, the fact that
they want to see me again at all means there must be SOMETHING wrong?

The not knowing is killing me.

Does anyone have any experience of something like this? Will the two
month appointment be a routine follow up? Would something serious be
left for two months to fester? Does the fact that it's the NHS mean
that all bets are off?

Help!

Dave

If it is any comfort, the odds on it being skin cancer are quite low.
Many skin cancers are sun/uv exposure related, and most also have
irregular colours and shapes. If it was clearly skin cancer, I am sure
you would know by now, because the diagnosis and pathology would be
clear cut. Odds are the pathology is a little unusual, at that's
what's taking the time. The less clear cut the pathology, the less
agressive the growth is likely to be.

Hi Dave,
2 months to me is along time to wait.It most likely is nothing but I
know how anxiety can get the best of us,, I would call and tell the dr.
office that you need the results now,, I don't see why the dr. can't
take 5 minutes out of his day to ease your mind. good luck Jeannette

Dave, call and INSIST on speaking to the consultant. The run around is
ridiculous ( even for the NHS!).

Having said that, it's unlikely to be malignant
