Default Testicular cancer and radiotherapy

Hello Newsgoup,
I had testicular cancer in 2003 from a seminom type. In a surgery the
affected testicle was removed. After that a 4 weeks lasting radiotherapy
followed in the abdomen area.
Now in ultrasonic testing they found that the small intestine showed some
cicatrices due to the radiation.
Is there anything I can do to lower the effects of the radiation ?

P.S. sorry for my bad english

Hello J,

sometimes it is aching and the doctor said it will be worse in future and
might lead to intestine inflammation.
So, I am a little bit worried.

Hello Gruss and thank you for your response.
(some people don't understand newsgroups and wait for email responses).
As far as I know the only way to remove scarring is surgery and then there would
probably be two places of scars where they cut out the area that had the scar
and "sewed" (sutured) the two ends back together again, so if there's no major
problem, it would make sense to me that you make sure you're always on a good
diet to make sure the bowels work "regular" and report any constipation combined
with vomiting ASAP.

I don't know your age but assume younger and I wouldn't want surgery on my bowel
(which carries risks) just because of some "aching".

There's (usually) a colorectal surgeon on newsgroup sci.med if you'd like to
direct your question there.
If there's a narrowing (ie more details) best to tell him what the reporting
doctor has detailled, as well.
I will watch with interest on what he suggests.
J

Thanks very much for your answer, but I think I will wait because I already
had a surgery. I thought about a special diet.

Thanks anyhow.

Ultrasound cannot detect "cicatrices due to the radiation" as far as I'm
aware.
In addition, the kind of relatively low dose radiotherapy used in seminoma
prophylaxis is very unlikely to produce long-term small bowel damage.
