Default Thyroid cancer

Our daughter just returned from a thyrogen study to learn that her
Hashimodo's thyroid cancer has invanded her lymph nodes.

The thyroid was removed about a year ago and now there's evidence of
lymph node growth in the left neck.

I would appreciae any thoughts from those who have been here before.

Hello Chuck,
I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's recurrence.
I assume it's papillary cancer and she'll be having RAI ?
Hang in there in case Steph has a comment.
bj will likely be around to collect you for the thyroid cancer list.

I am real glad that my thyroid cancer was caught early. I had
already had Hodgkin's Lymphoma and the radiation and chemo
for it. My thyroid gland swelled up all of the sudden so I got
to my oncologist right away and it was surgically removed
and I was then given 5 or 6 doses of I-131 to make sure it was
thoroughly destroyed. The idea of a different kind of cancer
actacking my lymph system is scary after Hodgkin's.

"5 or 6" treatments is a bit unusual -- did you have a particularly nasty,
recurring or metastatic (which doesn't sound like "early" to me....) case or
what ?
Or are you counting scanning doses not just treatments?
bj
TT, I131 ablation (once), 1 pre-treatment I123 scan dose & 1-post-ablation
scan (no extra dose) plus 5 checkup scans with small ("scanning") doses of
I131 at years 1, 2, 3, 4, 6; also a couple of U/S, CT & MRI to check
something "suspicious", as well as a look-see down the throat by the ENT
(that was "fun").

They only removed one side because the initial pathology
in surgery did not show cancer. After more extensive testing,
they did find cancer in the gland, but it was too dangerous
to go back in and remove the other side. They weren't taking
any chances so the gave me I-131 5 or 6 times to burn out
the remaining gland. They put me in a lead lined hospital
room each time and I got to stay until the nuclear safety
officer would get a low enough reading for me to go home.

There is no such thing a "Hasimoto's thyroid cancer", though thyroid cancer
and Hashimoto's thyroiditis can coexeist

Thanks for the response. She had RAI following surgery and nearly lost
her kidneys as a result. Now the surgeon says she needs a radical neck
resection as her cancer was quite advanced when the thyroid was
removed. RAI, arguably an option, given the history is being ruled
out.

She's supposed to see an ENT oncologist soon for a second opinion but
the course seems pretty clear.

I really don't know other than what I have been told. As I previously
posted, they're pretty convinced she needs a radical neck resection
given the advanced stage of her cancer once it was discovered.

Kidney failure is not a recognised complication of RAI. There is no rational
basis why it might be.

I think you are suffering from Chinese Whispers. Go with your daughter to
the oncologist and get the real scoop

Chuck,
When Steph asks "what's the histology?", the corredt response is "I will find
out by requesting copies of the reports",
He's a seasoned radiation oncologist currently specializing in head and neck
cancers, in Canada.
It's good to double check treatment choices iwth him, but that can't be done
unless we're given the accurate delails.
Please and thanks.

So true. I see two oncology doctors. One who is a specialist in head
and neck cancers. I have had my thyroid gland removed due to
cancer and I have benign meningioma tumors in lining around my
brain. The second oncology doctor is for the Hodgkin's Lynphoma
I had as a teenager and she is also a hematologist. I recently had
my platelets crash to near zero and was admitted to the hospital.
She has gotten this corrected and my platelets are now at 286k.

It pays to have a specialist who truly understands a specific problem
because the amount of new information is just too much for one
doctor to try to keep up with everything.

Did you have actual thyroid cancer or was the cancer some other kind that
happened to be around there? if it was thyroid cancer do you know which type
& have you also had an endocrinologist following you?

It was cancer directly in the thyroid gland and isolated to it. I do
not know the specific type of cancer other than just being told
that it was thyroid cancer. I was given multiple doses of I-131 to
make sure all of my thyroid tissue was destroyed.

Because of having Hodgkin's Lymphoma, Thyroid cancer,
osteoporosis, benign brain tumors and needing to be on
testosterone replacement therapy, I see two oncologists
and an endocrinologist. The female oncologist also has
training in hematology and endocrinology. The male
oncologist also has training in genital and prostate
cancers so all bases are covered. It takes 3 doctors to
have enough training to cover everything that I have
for chronic problems. For a long time I only saw the male
oncologist, but he finally admitted that he needed some
more help.

I also have to go to a cardiologist twice a year because of
a bad heart valve that may have been damaged by the
high energy radiation used against the lymphoma.

Keeps me busy seeing doctors, but i can still do anything
within reason that I want to. I can't run any marathons,
but I don't see that as a problem.

Goodness you do have a lot on your plate.
It sure can be complicated when so many of your life's appointments are
medical!

I can't run a marathon either -- more because of age &
body-falling-to-pieces than the cancer or diabetes (at least they are
followed by the same specialist!). Not to mention that I'm so slow I'd be
out there all day just on the training runs! I have done a few 10milers &
1/2Marathons, though; I'm not sure if that counts as "within reason". :-)

Best wishes. And if you ever need to discuss thyca come around to the list
from thyca.org at http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Thyca/. There are
some other multi-cancer-survivors there too.
