Default Upsate on Pain medical help and how life is treating my family

The Ins co. ( The state of AZ) has placed me on a wait and see list
about Pain clinic Help. They only see the cost of a 3 day hospital trip
to a pain clinic and the cost of the Pump (15,000.00) I wish they would
see from my end. I cost AZ some 2500-3500 a month in DR and medicine
costs take that over a yr. and you get $27,000-39,000.00 a year in costs
VS a one time charge of $25.000.00 plus 250 a month in meds I may use or
not.

So here I go again. In pain daily. I feel like a pig on a skewer being
spun slowly over an open greill. Being cooked (my case being killed by
pain every day a peice at a time). The state of AZ is also NUTS in this
regard.

When I was fighting to get my disability check I had no income. So I got
$155.00 a month in food stamps. Now that I have income a wopping $808.00
I get a loosey $12.00 a month in food stamps. I can't get any for my
wife she doesn't have a social security # because she's from Mexico.
She'll soon have one in a few months once we finnish with her paperwork.

The state only uses Rent ( and then only a portion) All you Utilities.
and any out of pocket medical costs you have. If it is EQUAL to or
greater than 85% of your income you get food stamps. Plus when I was
haveing this on the phone interview. Which in the beging says will be
recorded. The interviewer told me NOT to PAY my car Insurance so we
could eat. Not paying car insurance in the state of AZ on a car is
Illeagl. Actiualy it's a felony. So the state tells me to commit a
Felony so I can have food on my table.

What I'm going to do This monday is conatct the ADA. American Disability
Act people in Washington DC. Tell them I have a problem with the state
of AZ and their distibution of a Federal Food stamp Program. I would
like a judge to Subpeana That recording I had with the interviewer.
Telling me to break State Law so My wife and I can eat. I know people
in Indiana Who are on Disabiliy=ty. Who make more Money than me. and who
Get $250.00 a month in food stamps. My Friend Randy is blind due to a
car accident from 3 yrs ago. He lives in apartment that's subsidized
from HUD similar to my apartment. He has car Ins, Cable tv, intenert,
Water, Phone, A student loan, and a small rent bill. He gets $930.00 a
month and yet he gets $250.00 for food and he's by him self.

Here am I with a wife and $747 a month in bills and a food bill of
almost $200.00. Where am I to come up with this extra cash? If I don't
pay my car Ins that frees up 77.50. if I only do laundry 2 times a
months and use less clothes ( or wear stinky clothes more often).
and I do not use my car at all. Don't buy any gas. But wait how do I get
to my dr's visits? How do I get to the STate offices for AHCCCS (
MedicalIns) when they want to see me? Or how do I get our clothes to the
Laundry in the first place?

If I do all this I can scrape about $167.50 for food. My wife and I
living on $40.00 a week not including supplies I use for my colostemy
that Medical Ins doesn't cover, And the Co-pays when I see Dr.s No co
pay no Dr. My dad who's not rich by any means knows what's going on.
Sent my wife and I today a check for $200.00. I'm stuck in a quandry. Do
I accept it? or send it back? He's 77 Yrs old alone since mom died in
1999. My sisters 1 lives 125 miles away and has 3 boys all under 8 yrs
old. The other lives 75 Miles south and is going to college working on
Her PHD in Speach Therapy. I know my dad needs the cash. But he like
myself is generous to a fault.

Or Do I cash the check only take half and send the other half back to
dad. I am leaning on this idea the most. $100.00 would make up for a
good chunk of the shortfall in cash this month. I did have left over
foodstamps from last month. I used them 2 days ago. I had $25.93 and
used $25.00 of it for food.

My wife and I can't ask any of her relatives for help financialy.
Anything but that and they would helpus out in a heart beat. Everyone we
know is strapped for cash. And everyone we know has children lot's of
them and the children are mostly under the age of 10. My wife and I DO
NOT wanr to infringe on any child being able to get food or to be taken
care of properly.

So what do we do? We can't sell the car. We just finnished paying it off
a yr ago. And even that was helped by my dad and a loan from him for
$885.00 top pay the car note off. I can't see selling the car. MY dad in
a way own's 25% of that car. My wife own 40% and I own the ballance.

I was thinking of going to the church's food bank or the county food
bank to see if we could get some type of aid from them. But becasue I
have Money comming in. There's a good chance I make to much $$$ to qualify.

All my life I have spent helping others. Never asking for any help for
myself. Even up to the point I was Dx's with this cancer I didn't ask
for help. I have served the State of Maine for 10 Yrs as a Volunteer
Fire Fighter. I've been burned 3x's, electrocuted 2x's, blown out of a
second story window froma gas explosion. I have bee there to cut the
most ugly drunks out of their car after they kill a family durring drunk
driving binge. I have had the honor of being a EMT-II and bringing 3
wonderful babies into this world. My squad and I have won numerous
awards for fire fighting and the saving of lives. But, for what?! I have
done all of this service. And now that I am totally disabled. Unable to
work for the forseeable future. I'm not allowed to feed my wife and myself?

We don't own much of anything. If we did I would sell it to make up some
money to take care of us. Before all this happened I used to have a
$300.00 buffer in my checking account. I have use up 1/2 of it Next
month I'll use the other 1/2 after that where is the money going to come
in to take care of the bills? Or do we eat. My oncologist early on told
me a good way to eat that would help my imune system fight the cancer.
Eating this way was expensive but the food stamps helped cover the extra
costs involved. We believe that's how I got to Remission as a stage 4
cancer Patient. If we have to change the way I eat. Will that in any way
change how my body is fighting this cancer? Would this in any way take
me out of this remission and back to full stage 4 cancer. If that
happens we know from what all my dr's have told us. Their would be a
slimto none chane of making back to another remission. That would be the
end of a new life and the end of my life as we know it.

If this does happen can we hold the state resposible from removing me
from a Dr'd order diet that helps fight the type of cancer that I have?
Ifwe fight like atht. More than likely I wonj't be around to see the
ned. Win or loose. I'de be out of the picture.

That's all I have to rave about this weekend folks. If you know of
anyone who cann tell the state of AZ to go SHove it (legallY) please let
me know.

Thanks again,

Frank

Hi Frank,
Have you tried using food stamps plus a bit of cash for emergency food boxes?
http://yccc.yumaed.org/local/new_page_143.htm

Which I think is also mentioned here. (below)

Sometimes emergency food boxes are available at Salvation Army and churches.
There's additional ones mentioned here
http://www.cpes.com/advocacyresource...food_banks.htm
including a "love kitchen", but I don't know if any of those are near you.
A person has to phone each and make a note of each's rules, then weigh what it
costs to go there.

I've taken people to such places and usually if there's kids, they get more and
better foods.
And if there's a healthcare problem, a letter from the doctor (or diagnosis
letter) can sometimes get more food, into the basket as well. Depends on the
demand and availability (what has been donated), at each place. It's early in
crops here, but later in summer, farmers sometimes donate vegetables or fruit.
I don't know if that happens in your area or not. But if it does, they're
"one-timers" extra over what is usually donated and distributed to the public.
So a bonus surprise, when people go to their regular places each month (or
whatever schedule is allowed for each place).

If I find more, I'll let you know.

I'll try to find other support resources. Before I start searching, Do you mean
places to go and meet with others?

Frank,

Maybe it is more difficult in AZ (so many retirees) & so near the
border? No one in this country should go without food & this is just
plain shameful.

I don't know if this is any help, but I once read that anyone can eat
at the public schools, but even the small fee there could wreck the
budget.

I volunteer to serve at the Denver Rescue Mission once a month here &
the food isn't bad. They always have fresh vegetables & salad as part
of the meal. A lot of the 'customers' are street people & everyone is
treated with dignity. Everyone who shows up gets fed. I don't know
if you have similar.

When Socks went into hospice care, the social worker tried to get us
to take food bank stuff, but we had no need. I know you're not in
hospice, but I wonder if a social worker involved witrh your care
facility could put you in touch with this sort of thing. They would
have brought boxes of stuff to the house. There was no income
requirement & they insisted that most patients took it as it freed up
money for other things. It makes me mad that they were trying to
force this on us & you are having trrouble getting it.

http://www.projectangelheart.org/
Do you have anything like this &/or Meals on Wheels? Project Angel
Heart started out being for AIDS patients who require nutritous food.
Is there an AIDS society there to inquire of?

I guess moving is out of the question for you.

In the Denver area we also have
http://www.foodbankrockies.org/ that has great food including fresh.
Do you have anything like that?

I feel really helpless & know so little about what's available where
you live. Hope J turns up something &/or your health care team can.
You need to get freed up form the food issue so you can concentrate on
your care.

Your dad sent you the money b/c he wants you to have it. I would
accept with gratitude.

God, Frank, tell me who to write or call for you there. One thing you can do
is contact a Catholic church in your area. Even if you aren't Catholic, they
will help you with food and utilities with no questions asked. I am not
familiar with how other churches help, but I do know they will.

The priest will also lead you to get more help and they seem to have an in
with social services and most all of them have food pantries.

My friend just emailed me about her friend, Rebecca, who has been a cancer
survivor for five years, but Medicaid just bumped her up to Medicare from
Medicaid for some reason, so a lot of her services have stopped and her
regular meds aren't paid for so my friend sends her whatever money she can
every month.

It's so sad and senseless that the richest country in the world seems to
kick it's sick and disabled and elderly to the curb. This is the war we need
to be fighting where there are more casualties than combat.

I received an email yesterday for my friend from someone that knows about
the Montel Williams bus that goes around to help people in your condition,
and as soon as she gets me the phone number for it, I will post it.

God bless you, dear dear Frank. I am praying for a miracle for you.

Giuditta

Ah, Frank. It is too bad you are in AZ. My twin brother lived in
Phoenix for over 50 years. He had been an vice president of a large
international firm. He began to have problems, ended with a severe
severe depression. The drugs proscribed gave him horrible night
mares. He stopped the drugs. Became more and more of a recluse. We
could not get him to leave the house. The state said nothing could be
done as he was not a danger to himself or others. He continued in a
downward spiral He got very sick with a kidney infection. His
daughter went through the whole phone book and not one physician would
make a house call. The infection progressed and it killed him. The
day before he died, because of a friend of a friend of a friend, a
member of hospice came to the house, but by then it was too late. And
she said she could do nothing officially anyway.
When I went out there I went to his Primary Care and pled his case, to
no avail
I wish you well in your pursuit of care and comfort.
