"Usenet Advice for WebTV Customers
Welcome to the wonderful world of Usenet. Tired of being flamed (i.e.,
insulted) by computer users? Many of you are beginners, so let's briefly go
over the customs and rules Usenet citizens have developed over the years.
1. Usenet is not the Web. It is a separate computer network. If you do not
know what a computer network is, go to
http://web.archive.org/web/200308022...www.yahoo.com/ and look it
up.
2. Usenet is not a chatroom. Chatrooms are part of the Web.
3. Don't post pictures into Usenet newsgroups unless the newsgroup title
suggests that's what it's for. If you see alt.binaries.pictures, that means
it's OK to post pictures. If you see talk.politics.misc or
alt.alien.research, that means it's not OK to post pictures.
4. Don't post sound files into Usenet newsgroups unless the newsgroup title
suggests that's what it's for. See number 3.
5. Don't post html code into Usenet newsgroups. Period. Html is for the
World Wide Web. Usenet is not the World Wide Web. See number 1. No one is
interested in reading about your local weather or who your favorite rock
star is. Really.
6. Learn how to quote. When replying to a message, quote the portion you are
referring to so that people will know what you are talking about. If you do
not know how to do this, read the information contained on this page. If you
don't quote the portion of the message you are referring to, chances are you
will come off looking nonsensical.
7. It doesn't cost $2,200 for a PC if you want to surf the Web. Some WebTV
users are laboring under the mistaken belief that WebTV offers a signficant
price advantage over the PC. The fact is that anyone can buy a fully
Web-capable PC for less than $200. Don't waste your time (and ours) claiming
otherwise.
Follow these simple rules and you'll save yourself a lot of hassle. If you
don't follow these simple rules, expect to be flamed by computer users.
You'll also further damage the already poor reputation WebTV customers have
in the online community. That's life.
WebTV TOS (Terms of Service)
4. Standards of Behavior
4.1 Network Conduct and Proper Language. Conduct on the WebTV Network
service and throughout the Internet should conform to public standards of
decency and decorum, right of quiet enjoyment and current "netiquette"
standards. You agree to conform to such standards and to insure that all
Secondary Users similarly refrain from engaging in any disallowed behavior,
inappropriate or unauthorized uses or from using the WebTV Network service
in any manner that does or would have the tendency to disrupt the normal use
of the WebTV Network service or the Internet by other users. Both the WebTV
Network service and the Internet in general contain areas such as forums,
bulletin boards, chat rooms, news groups or other message and communication
facilities (collectively, that put people in touch with each other,
generally for a specific purpose. Access to such Forums and the ability to
"Chat" have been provided by WNI as a privilege. If you participate in any
such Forum, you agree to review and abide by the rules of that specific
Forum and to only send messages and material in a manner and form that are
proper, which are related to the purpose of that particular Forum, and which
do not disrupt the group or, in any other way, violate these Terms. You
acknowledge that all such Forums are public, so that any communication that
you transmit is not a private communication and that such Forums may not be
monitored, screened or approved by WNI. Further, in the event that your
usage of any Forum results in complaints to WNI regarding your behavior,
your privilege to use Chat may be suspended or denied by WNI, at its sole
discretion, for any period of time, with or without prior warning or notice.
4.2 Disallowed Behavior. No user may disrupt, harass, abuse, stalk, defame,
embarrass, threaten, impersonate, cause discomfort to or become offensive to
or otherwise violate the legal rights (including rights of privacy and
publicity) of any person or Forum using the WebTV Network service or the
Internet. Vulgarity, profanity or adult material within e-mail or greeting
cards to other people (who are not personally known to you or who do not
specifically consent to such messages), chat groups, Forums or within user
e-mail names is not permitted. Users shall not publish, post, sell,
distribute or disseminate any defamatory, infringing, obscene, indecent or
unlawful material or information. There shall be no advertising to,
solicitation of, stalking or spamming of other users. WNI reserves the right
to prohibit the use of any user e-mail name and/or to make changes to any
user e-mail name as WNI, in its sole discretion, requires.
How to quote messages with your WebTV
1. Put the cursor anywhere in the text of the message being responded to.
2. Highlight the entire message using <CMD-A>.
3. Copy the highlighted text using <CMD-C>.
4. Click on the "Respond" command on the menu on the left-hand side of the
screen.
5. Paste the copied text using <CMD-V>.
6. Edit out any unwanted portions of the pasted text. (Depending on the
amount of material to be cut, this can be done either with the
backspace key, or, for larger deletions, by using <SHIFT> and one of the
arrow keys to highlight a block of text, then deleting using <CMD-X>.
7. Edit the attribution header a bit -- at minimum, just adding the
word "wrote" or some equivalent to the original poster's name from the
copied text.
8. Indent the quoted text, using one or more ">"s (depending on level of
attribution) followed by a space at the beginning of each line, and entering
manual returns at the end of each line.
9. Then compose the reply.
