Default Vitamin C Highly Toxic to Neuroblastoma

Sodium Ascorbate induces apoptosis in neuroblastoma cell lines by
interfering with iron uptake.
Carosio R, Zuccari G, Orienti I, Mangraviti S, Montaldo PG.
ABSTRACT:
BACKGROUND:
Neuroblastoma (NB) is an extra-cranial solid tumour of childhood. In
spite of the good clinical response to first-line therapy, complete
eradication of NB cells is rarely achieved. Thus, new therapeutic
strategies are needed to eradicate surviving NB cells and prevent
relapse. Sodium ascorbate has been recently reported to induce
apoptosis of B16 melanoma cells through down-regulation of the
transferrin receptor, CD71. Since NB and melanoma share the same
embryologic neuroectodermal origin, we used different human NB cell
lines to assess whether the same findings occurred.
RESULTS:
We could observe dose- and time-dependent induction of apoptosis in
all NB cell lines. Sodium ascorbate decreased the expression of CD71
and caused cell death within 24 h. An increase in the global and
specific caspase activity took place, as well as an early loss of the
mitochondrial transmembrane potential. Moreover, intracellular iron
was significantly decreased after exposure to sodium ascorbate.
Apoptotic markers were reverted when the cells were pretreated with
the iron donor ferric ammonium citrate (FAC), further confirming that
iron depletion is responsible for the ascorbate-induced cell death in
NB cells.
CONCLUSIONS:
Sodium ascorbate is highly toxic to neuroblastoma cell lines and the
specific mechanism of vitamin C-induced apoptosis is due to a
perturbation of intracellular iron levels ensuing TfR-downregulation.

Presentation of Neuroblastoma
Neuroblastoma is predominantly a tumor of early childhood, with two
thirds of the cases presenting in children younger than 5 years.

Fortitech gets Pakistan iron fortification contract

By Clarisse Douaud

5/30/2007 - New York State-based Fortitech announced its Asia Pacific
operations have secured a manufacture and supply contract for iron
premix with the Pakistan Ministry of Health's National Wheat Flour
Fortification Program.

According to the company, Fortitech Asia Pacific won a technical and
financial bid against other international suppliers. Fortitech The
company will partner with Akzo Nobel, maker of branded Ferrazone XF.

The market opportunities for such fortification contracts in
developing countries given that UNICEF has identified iron deficiency
as the most sweeping nutritional problem facing the world.

According to the global agency, the area has seen little improvement,
unlike vitamin A and iodine.

Between four and five billion people worldwide are deficient in iron,
reports the UN, and an estimated 2 billion are anaemic.

The problem is particularly insidious in women and children, with 50
percent of pregnant women and between 40 and 50 percent of children
under five in developing countries iron deficient.

"It also causes a range of other problems in millions of people,
including impaired cognitive development in children, fatigue,
maternal mortality and low productivity in the workplace," said Ram
Chaudhari, co-founder and chief scientific officer Fortitech.

Fortitech and Akzo Nobel claim research into Ferrazone has
demonstrated it is absorbed into the human body two to four times
better than with other iron compounds.

"This is a triumph for the scientific community who has toiled for so
many years to show that FeNaEDTA is probably the best source of iron
in many cases to combat iron deficiency anemia," said Geoff Smith,
global director of chelates for health at Akzo Nobel.

While UNICEF sees promoting iron-rich foods as the primary means of
reducing iron deficiency, it also recommends fortifying staples as an
alternative in order to reach large populations.

The Pakistan Ministry of Health is launching the large scale national
wheat fortification program in part to reduce the high occurrence of
iron deficiency and anemia in the country.

The national wheat flour fortification program is partly funded by the
GAIN Foundation, a global alliance that promotes food fortification
for improving the health of vulnerable populations.

"This is an exemplary example of public-private partnership to improve
the quality of lives of the population,...," said Regina Moench-Pfanner,
senior manager with the GAIN Foundation. "We congratulate the Pakistan
Government in taking this bold, concrete step."

Fortitech Asia Pacific is currently strengthening its operations in
the region with the construction of a new facility in Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia.

"Highly toxic"? That is one messed up way to look at it.

A neuroblastoma is a collection of cells in a body that is not
functioning as it should. Vitamin C enables the body and its cells to
function as it should.

Is this a surprise?

Good health is impossible without good nutrition, and that requires
ALL vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

"74% of Americans are below daily RDA requirements for magnesium, 55% for
iron, 68% calcium, 40% vitamin C, 33% B12, 80% B6, 33% B3, 35% B2, 45% B1,
50% vitamin A.

From 25-50% of hospital patients suffer from protein calorie
malnutrition. Pure malnutrition (cachexia) is responsible for at least 22%
and up to 67% of all cancer deaths. Up to 80% of all cancer patients have
reduced levels of serum albumin, which is a leading indicator of protein and
calorie malnutrition. At least 20% of Americans are clinically malnourished,
with 70% being sub-clinically malnourished, and the remaining "chosen few"
10% in good optimal health."-Patrick Quillin, Ph.D.

And many people dispute most, if not all, RDAs as being ridiculously
low.

And most Doctors could not spot *any* sub-clinical conditions caused
by general malnourishment if their patients health depended on it.
(Irony intended).
