Where is everybody ? - Check in please.
Too sick to wade through the posts or set your filters or delete the
garbage posts?

Updates anybody?

Newly diagnosed? - come on in. Munge your email address, if possible.

Google readers: Set to "Latest message" and "Topic Summary"so that down
the right side you should see some of the ongoing exchanges.

In 2007 we had two relapse scares, but they were only scares. Tumor
markers showed a bad trend (increasing, duh) but MRI scans showed no
obvious new tumor.

I am coping in part by writing a medical journal article about the
interpretation of tumor marker test results in the surveillance of
infant germ cell tumors, specifically teratoma and yolk sac tumor
(endodermal sinus tumor). Although tumor marker tests are standard,
there is *no* published guidance re how to interpret test results.
And of course the trick is to know when the test results indicate a
probable relapse.

Anyone reading this who has an infant diagnosed with a teratoma,
yolk sac tumor, or endodermal sinus tumor: if you would like to
contribute to this article by providing your baby's tumor marker
test results, in full confidence, please contact me off list.

Still remaining cancer free, but I will have to go in for a heart valve
repair or replacement as soon as it can be scheduled by the surgeon.

The consensus opinion from more than one doctor is that this problem
was caused by the high energy radiation treatments I received to my
chest in 1976, so this is somewhat cancer related.

I just want to get it scheduled and over instead of having to wait so long.

Well, definitely sick of the "garbage" posts... and seemingly not much
traffic here to respond to otherwise (unless I am accidently deleting it all
with filters and crude mass-deletes), but anyway ...

Still here, still stage 3B recurrent Ovarian Cancer whose return was
diagnosed June 2006. Neither the surgery (inoperable/unsuccessful), nor
subsequent 6 months of carbo/taxol, or 1year (and counting) of Doxil and
Arimidex has improved things (no tumor shrinkage). On the other hand, it
hasn't grown either, and the CA 125 number is staying down.

But the pain and swelling (overall as well as lymphedema) has increased to
the point where I can barely do anything - but no one will treat it - other
than with a mild (largely ineffectual) diuretic, and a mild (largely
ineffectual) pain killer.

The docs mostly think it is a "success" that the disease hasn't progressed,
which I agree is good, but some pain-free days would be nice.

Bobert Here,

SCLC
I just passed my 3rd yr. of ned on Jan 10.
May 29 will be the 5th anniversary of Dx.

When first reading up on SCLC in 2003 I read that 6 yr. is the magic number
for SCLC, but My Onc. is using 5 yr. I'll celebrate both, thank you.

Next scans will be sometime in March

We had a big Pacific Storm make landfall on Friday Jan 4 2008. My 65th
birthday.
High wind gusts @65 mph. and gobs of rain more than 8 inches in 3 days.
Power went off at 5:25 am. We live in a wooded section of the Monterey
Peninsula. And many trees are still laying on their side Power came back at
5:25 pm on Wed. On last night's news the number of customers without power
was 1 Having lived in the area for many years we were prepared for all but
the cold. No heat for the whole time. One little fireplace for warmth,
but layers of clothing and a couple of down comforters and we were good to
go. At least our hot water is gas, so we had hot water for the whole time.
Might get a generator to make sure that the power doesn't go off again.

Many trees to be cleared The tree people are working overtime, just a big
job to get them cut up and hauled off. Wish I could use some of them for
firewood, but I don't have a splitter.

Looking forward to seeing who responds to roll call

Pam S. here, Rob has made 11 months since I was told to look into
funeral arrangements for him. He's doing well. Fortunately, I'm the
only one who gets embarrassed by some of his remarks. The rest of
them are funny. He's still on hospice, and we're all amazed by how
well he's doing. Both kids are back in college, so I'm here alone
with him in the morning and then his CNA is here in the afternoon.
Life isn't all peaches and cream, Rob keeps turning up the TV so that
I have to wear head phones to hear my music and drown out the worst of
the noise. I thought that it was his response to my occasional
snatches of song, but he does it no matter what. I have to assume
that his hearing is starting to go.

He's still on monthly doses of Temodar and monitoring by his
oncologist. Each visit is a reason for Rob to visit all the people at
the cancer center who've helped take care of him. I don't mind, I get
a chance to say thank you as well.

Hello to all legitimate posters and we are thinking good and healing
thoughts for you all.

Hi J, I am here.

Had a quiet Christmas and New Year's. Neighbors invited me for Christmas
dinner and I had several invitations for New Year's but decided to make
it a "quiet" New Year's Eve.

Hi Alayne here,

Spend most of my time lurking these days as I'm no longer in a caring role
and don't seem to have much input, I'm also still pretty busy with the sale
of FIL's house, despite very good offer lots of problems with actual sale
that need resolving. On the upside, was dead chuffed to have a visit from
my builder (with leukemia) he's been in hosp several times but is on road to
recovery and looks well, drs. are still discussing long term treatment and
possibility of bone marrow as I gather each time it returns the remission is
shorter. I'm planning more major disruption to the household in the form of
a new kitchen with building work first, well, can't have life calm and
boring ;-)

Hope all is well with all and send Warm Hugs

Alayne

Complicated ? Hydraulic, Gas?
http://www.omegastores.com/omegasplitters.htm
4 or 5 ton, not powerful enough
http://www.omegastores.com/omegasplitters.htm

Willing to go pickup ? And return?
Seen old posts on misc.rural - could try there.

Methinks a lady on alt.support.lupus 's brother lives in SoCal and built a log
home.
I think she lives in N. Ca. Her home might also be built of logs - landlord
might have a splitter.
Go ask, give details of what you need and if you could borrow or rent. Put OT
Attn: Mair
I'll go vouch for you.

Congrats on the NED and good wishes for upcoming scan.

Hello Anne,
I'm sorry about your pain.
Let's talk about lymphedema in a separate post.
You tell us what you've tried, what's right or wrong about what I post, ok?

Good luck with the surgery, Mark.
Repair? It says here that the tissue around valve stretches, leaving it leaky
http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/ask_the_...lacement.shtml
Is yours plastic or metal?
I suppose you could ask for the replaced one and have the manufacturer give you
an opinion on any wear or damage to it?

Well, anyway. Good luck.
Let us know when you're going in, so we can watch for your return.
Best,
J

Nothing at all has been done yet. I still have the original and am waiting
to talk to the surgeon. He will let me know what needs to be done. I am
hoping that it will be possible to fix my own valve without having to
install a mechanical valve.

One thing that seldom gets discussed is the chronic problems that
can be caused by various cancer treatments. The immediate thing
is to get you to survice the cancer, but if you do survive and live
for decades, the chronic problems can also be fairly dangerous
to you health.

Cancer doesn't want to give up easily, so the chemo and radiation
generally has to be pretty aggressive. We may just now be getting
a sufficiently large number of long term survivors to get valid
statistical analysis of the long term effects of the treatments.
By long term, I am referring to people who have survived more than
20 years and have been followed closely by an oncologist.

My dad is fine. Robert's cancer has spread to his brain. He will have to
undergo radiation for a long time, every day. I know it's a lot of weeks,
but I can't remember how many. I just have to be prepared. I still can't
believe this. We only found out this weekend and I've been in shock since.
I thought he was doing well as we were told. I will keep you
updated........Warmly, Chris

OK, I usually lurk. Checking in. I first joined here when I had skin cancer
and then got support when my Dad had cancer.

New scare is sudden rectal bleeding (quite a bit). Awaiting call tomorrow
from GI. Colonoscopy on tap I'd bet.

Lots of anxiety about this, of course.

On another topic: question for J or someone else in the know: how do these
idiots keep putting the garbage posts in this newsgroup. Do they just have
some automated way of sending hundreds of posts to the group(s)? Why do they
do that? Also, is it one ("clever") person or do groups of people get
together and do this?

Thank you for the updates, Betsy.
If you're having trouble with blood sugars, try this, if you're eating.
Chopped (or sliced), carrots sticks, celery and (red) radishes.
Finish each meal (or snack) with some of that. Seems to help me with
bouncing (highs/lows) blood sugars.
Eat your favorite (or dessert) first, then the CCR mix.
Please keep in touch, as you are able.
Hugs from me
J

Hello Alayne,
It's sure swell to hear from you and hear that your builder's doing so well.
Maybe they can get him into "chronic" (and I think on Glivec). Would be
wonderful eh?

Good luck with the house sale.
I'd love to hear about your kitchen reno (email or group).
With all the other garbage posts (some see, some don't), who cares if it's OT.
Are stainless steel appliances in the picture?
Take care, biker lady.
I hope the builder can make your reno dreams come true.
Hugs
J

Usually one person; yes, automated.
Intent: to make newsgroups un-usable.
Don't let it happen (all).
Keep posting and don't give up.

Thanks for updating us, Pam.
It's good to hear that Rob's doing so well.
Would he wear cordless head phones?
Some have volumes on them.
Tell him he could go get a snack or to the washroom and not miss a thing
with them.
I _think_ it's doable with TV - was with portable tape-players.

Thanks for the update,
Take care.
Hugs from me

I've been lurking. I'm feeling quite well. Got a good report in December
from cancer docs in Houston. Don't have to come back for a year. Still
have to see the local ENT every 3 or 4 months. Lots of energy and very
busy living.

I have to see a bowel motility specialist in February, also at MDA in
Houston, so we will be driving up a few days earlier than planned for
our February 24 cruise to Mexico and Honduras that sails from Galveston.
I'm still on daily laxatives and they want this doc to check me out for
possibly going on one of the new motility drugs. I think all the opiates
permanently ruined my colon. It doesn't work without some kind of
chemical assistance. At least they took me off the senna.

I still have mouth issues from the rads. There are days that the taste
buds get weird. Lately I have been unable to taste "sweet" though I was
able to taste it for quite a while. Don't know what's going on there, so
I'll have to check in with the folks on the ACOR list.

While both of us are enjoying decent health, we are planning a trip to
Europe in the Fall. We had a wonderful trip to Australia and New
Zealand. Thinking about a few other short trips in the States and maybe
into Mexico.

I have been going to the gym 5 days a week and using the treadmill at
home. I do water aerobics "body pumping" and a little Yoga. I'm feeling
very fit!

DH and I are in a community theater play that opens on February first. I
can't believe that I am articulate enough to have a rather meaty roll on
stage with only half a tongue, but miracles do happen. We are busy with
rehearsals. I'm dedicating my performance to my ENT and my docs at MDA.

I always mention the folks here in my prayers.

Bedroom tv cheap to have phone jack. don't know if cordless
headphones need one. Will have to check it out. I can't claim clean
as I crank up the volume in here too.

Well hello Petal, long time no type ;-) Here's a question for you - how are
you doing? You care about us all on here, but never forget that we care
bucket loads back ;-)

Bill the Builder (not Bob ;-) seems reasonably upbeat. It sounds like he's
been through a tough time of it, got pneumonia and was hospitalised then
sent home too early and back in again. He's on his feet and back to work
now, the oncologists are just looking into options because of the decreasing
remission time between recurrence. At least if he's gonna be doing my
kitchen, I can keep an eye on him ;-)

Hmmm, house sale, sore point at the moment, place is literally falling down,
I've got a really good buyer but nothing but hold ups along the way and I am
fearful that if it takes much longer, the sale will fall through and it will
be back to square one but house in a worse condition. I've sorted debts as
much as I can but am now beholden to his brother in London who has a hold
over the house and is being a pain in the butt, all he needs to do is state
how much the estate owes him and we're off but he's faffing about! Aaagh,
mutter mutter ;-)

New kitchen has been on the cards for ages, the units I have at present I
bought for £40 off a mate 15 years ago!! Now that they are just about
collapsing it's time for new ones. Bill is quoting for proper sort out in
there ie electrics, knocking down wall behind fire place and generally
making good.

A new project is very therapeutic and takes my mind off all the other crappy
stuff that keeps going on like house sale, crappy job, hormonal teenagers
both tv and washing maching blowing up (did you know a washing machine can
bunny hop and shoot dramatic sparks!!) the same week-end, the list is
endless really but hey, I'm still shrugging and smiling, at least the wheels
of life keep turning ;-)

Take care of you too now J, and hey, let us know how you're doing ;-)

Humungous Hugs

Alayne

oat cereal every morning?

Cold water in a bowl, mix some oats in, skip the salt they mention, 2
minutes on high in microwave,
Let cool and eat. The more water and longer cooking, the smoother it
becomes.
Conversely, the less water, the thicker.
I add water to cool it off and/or if it's too thick.

(I'm not constipated and often have to dash.later, after eating this, so
always have a washroom in sight, until you know how it'll affect you).

Good luck with the taste issues and thanks for sharing, Janet.
It's nice to hear about your activities and upcoming travel plans.

And watch it every second it's in the 'wave. It loves to bubble up &
jump out of the bowl. I keep opening/closing the door to let it bubble
back down. I didn't know this was good for constipation. It's my usual
breakfast at work. I add dried blueberries & nuts. Yum!

Hi Christine,
It's good to read that your Dad's doing well.

Brain metastases are common in SCLC.
Make the most of your time with Robert.
My thoughts will be with you all.
Thanks for the update.

Snipped a lot - we can come back to later. (or we'd need a direct telephone line
to talk for days and weeks <g)
Brother concerned that if house does not sell, there'll be ongoing costs?
Wants you to drop the price?
Is an agent showing the house?
Here, they don't make much effort for problem houses, especially the first 3
months.
Then they swoop in and say "it's not selling, best drop the price"

We have a "leftover" building supply place, so repairs or improvements can be
done for cheap.
Bill might know of one or two.
Your £40 units might improve his place?
Places often sell better when they look lived in. (some furniture, TV, a few
hanging plants in front of broken windows, and towels in the bathroom)
Home cooking smells: spray scents can be sprayed; eau de baked bread.

We have to declare _known_ deficiencies. Trompe-eye's can trick the eye of the
buyer into thinking it's not so bad.
Some repairs are cheaper than we expect; it's the labour that drives the cost
up.
Would be nice if Bill could have a look. Who knows; maybe biker crowd could
help with some improvements.
Is there a garage that can be made to look like a workshop? Inexpensive lamps
and some peg boards on the walls, with some tools (etc) on it?

Sometimes, some minor effort and money can open the buyer's eyes to
possibilities.
I think some places are best shown by the buyer, who point out all the
positives.

Sorry I meant "seller"...
I think some places are best shown by the seller, who point out all the
positives.

Good point, thanks. Or use a deeper bowl.
