if you go to a yacht club, do they talk about yachts 100% of the time?

this is a helpful newsgroup, and (seemingly) off topic posts are very common
in other support groups. try the group for 7 days, and you will likely
experience some degree of mood elevation.

Hello there, John. I don't know how old you are or that it really
matters, but what I do wonder, is if you deal with this condition and
if you do, for how long since we don't exactly revel in it and
sometimes, some of us at least, feel as though we can't do a whole lot
of living like other people and yet how badly some of us would since
we're no different than others, for we do have hopes, dreams, and
aspirations, and some of us are quite creative, in fact, some of the
most creative people who ever lived be they artists, musicians,
writers, actors, and such were people like Van Gogh, Beethoven, and
even some well-known rock musicians. We read each other's posts to see
how we can be of help as fellow sufferers; that is, as laymen since we
are not professionsals, and therefore, we can't nor should we care to
give out advice that is better left to a professional. Anyhow, I hope
that was helpful and I would like to welcome you, though it may not
sound like it as it may have sounded like I was jumping all over you
which certainly was not my intention in any way, so again, I would like
to welcome you and, who knows, maybe you will find some kindred
spirits, as it were. Best of luck to you.

Hi,

Yes, I admit my post was slightly hostile, so I dont blame yas for getting a
bit upset. I appoligise for that. Honestly though I wondered if the group
was being attacked by trolls etc, for example some one liner posts mean
nothing, are 3 minutes appart, and 10 posts long. Which to me strikes more
of OCD than depression.

I guess I come from a GAD, Social Phobic background. Which usually results
in depression and is somewhat related, but primarily my depression is not
the cause of my problems, the anxiety is. I guess from a newbies
perspective, I found it frustrating to read all these one liner posts which
consumed too much time, thus causing me to get anxious. I guess it just
struck me that reading it all was making me depressed cause I wasnt getting
anywhere, ie frustration, then followed by despair. I understand that
wollowing is a symptom of depression, I just wonder if its healthy to watch
others do it and/or participate in it.

I guess my experience also is that most lay people that have experienced a
problem for long enough sometimes know more than the professionals.

Thanks for the welcome, I hope I can add something to the group if I stick
around long enough.

John

Thanks Gravity, I guess I have to wait and see.

I guess though if you go to a yacht support club, generally they would talk
about yatchs and making them better, rather than say talking about what they
had for dinner.

But yes you are right, i was being narrowminded. But my main concern is that
depressed people acting depressed doesnt help anyone who is depressed.

Im not saying im right, just this was my initial gut reaction, and for that
reason is probably worth putting out there even if im wrong.

One such similar experience Ive had is, IRC channels...those places are full
of depressed people, people that just sit on their computer 12 hours
straight and be depressed. Its not a good place to be for a depressed person
unless they are activly talking about their problems.

that is true that depressed associations can corrupt good moods.

people are often upbeat on AOL chats, and it's still worthless. people are
upbeat at my workplace, but i find the conversation inane and pointless.

different strokes for different folks. when i hear a motivational speaker,
i get the urge to vomit.

i'm finding the best thing is hobbies. my happiest times are when i'm
buried in some silly pursuit.

a month. There are posts in here of good news. You also can get advice
from ppl that might be going through similiar problems. I have a take
it or leave it attitude when someone has advice. You'll figure it out.
Post whatever is on your mind. If u or someone u know has depression
your bound to find @ the very least someone will listen.

Thank you. I hope I get better as well. Now is there anything wrong with
you or does all of your depression stem from reading too many posts?

If so, I know an easy cure.

Hi John. OK, let's get real here and stop the stupidity and nonsense
(you know who you are). I'll begin.

Once upon a time....there was me, content and very satisfied, learning
to play the violin, getting old, but not really bothered by it, doting
on a grandchild, married to a long time love.

And then...a few things happened...nothing big...until there was a
straw....a camel's back snapped...blackness obscured everything...

Stay tuned for chapter two. I have to go and think for a bit. I've
gotten distracted..

Ive never used AOL Chat, but I assume its similar to IRC, I found IRC to be
extreamly downbeat, it mainly consisted of a group of not so bright/wise
people trying to outwit each other at putting each other down. I was once
one of these people, maybe did it for 8 years. Often times I would stare at
the screen for hours on end without actually typing anything. To put it
plainly the conversation was inane, pointless and distructive.

I agree also that most regular conversations are also inane and pointless.
There is only so much pleasure one can have from certain experiences, and
they run dry. However, if you try and engage in upbeat conversations
regardless of their inanity, I believe you will come out feeling happier.
Obviously this takes a bit of learning and practice.

Would I be correct if I was to say you consider those conversations beneath
you? Im guessing the upbeat people partaking in those workplace
conversations dont realise how inane it is and if they really thought about
it they'd get depressed. But the reason they do those inane conversations as
for a grounding to having non inane ones, which come fewer and further
between as you get older. E.g. If u piped up one day at work about quantum
phsyics, just out of the blue, it dont work. There is a certain amount of
inanity that goes on before you can actually discuss quantum physics.

Besides that, participating in inane chat can make you happy if you dont
think about it in a negative light. It's goes along with feeling part of a
community, which is fundamentally important for a happy being.

Once again perhaps im wrong, I myself dont particularly have any desire to
talk to anyone and I find inane chat to be tedious, but I do believe thats
because im out of practice and its not second nature to me as it is to some.
Inane chat is like eating breakfast for some, that is, it takes little
energy and they think nothing of it. Im guessing you are the opposite, it
takes alot of energy to do inane chat because you analyse it too much and
defeat yourself before you begin because the pay off for exerting that
amount of energy is so little.

There is also a distinct parallel here with the one liners that go on in
this group

John

There's a simple solution to your frustration, sunny Jim, stop reading.
No one is forcing you.

Oh I understand that. Just stating my feelings is all. When I reach my
threshhold I will move on.

It is fairly common nature to feel frustrated when people ignore a point.
It's part of wanting to fit in a comminity and be understood. You might see
the conundrum I have here. Increase my threshold of frustration, exist
detatched (i.e. ignore idiots) or find better aquantances (i.e.. stop
reading).

I do not believe that is so simple, perhaps im wrong, perhaps you could
supply me with other suggestions? At this point the best option is existing
detatched, which as you may well know leads to depression.

Thats fine. However I would appreciate if you dont feel like reading,
analysing and then contributing that you dont. It makes me frustrated as it
convolutes anything meaningful which might be said and I dont like that. Its
the equivelent of running through someone having a verbal conversation. Its
quiete rude and disrespectful, to me and yourself.

The thing is John, the one liners, are a continuation from a previous
conversation usually. Sometimes just some comedy relief and other times
just boredom Seriously, I've been posting here for 9 years now and other ppl
that have been here a long time and get "my" one liners and like wise...

There is plenty of support here too, you just have to hang in there, ask for
it, and well be more open minded.

Jane

How about you shoot yourself in the face? That would work.
