Default Important election

this upcoming election is so important... the past 4 years, under
the far right wing, extremist Bush regime, have been very, very bleak
and dark... I wish some left wing christians would speak up more
against the Bush regime, which has been so damaging and distructive...
I admire the left wing religious people, but they don't have nearly as
much power as the right wing does... Hopefully the democrats will be in
control of at least the house, if not both the house and the senate...
not that things will be perfect of course, but maybe they will bring a
little bit of light to the enormous darkness that has overtaken the
country and the world in the last 6 years...

I think the rest of the world does... Bush has virtually turned the
whole world against the U.S.... and I'm not critisizing all republicans
or conservatives... I think Ronald Reagan, who was a terrible
president, and Bush's father, who was also a terrible president, were
many times better then George W Bush... Bush and Rumsfeld and Cheney
etc...have been disgraceful... The Iraq war, for example is the most
dispicable thing in the world.. thousands of innocent americans and
Iraqis have been killed or severely injured... for what? yes, Saddam
was a brutal dictator... but there have been many brutal dictators, who
we didn't start a war against... We were friends with Saddam back in
the 1980's. We gave him weapons, and we knew back then what he was
like... The Iraq war was a completly unncessasary war... and there is
no end in sight... Bush is not making us safer from terrorism.. If
anything, he is making the world more dangerous by creating more
terrorism...

The republican party. Thor would be able to explain better then me.
What I remind myself about is that there are no "democrats" and no
"republicans", only people who call themselves by these names, who have
views that at least somewhat align with these labels...

Does anyone stand a chance of getting elected in the US if they *don't*
spout all the usual clap-trap about god and jebus? Why is religion so
important over there? A Christian fundamentalist nut-case is just as
much of a threat as a Muslim fundamentalist one, imo.

I agree completly... the christian right wing nuts are completly
in control... Bush is an extremist... and I don't mean at all to be
anti christian... I admire greatly the left wing christians, of which
there are many... Jimmy Carter for example was a true christian...
Jesus would be OUTRAGED by Bush... Is there any doubt about that? Jesus
was for the poor, Jesus was for peace... and it's pretty obvious that
the Bush administration is not... I saw a woman on Cspan recently who
was completly anti abortion... she was also outraged at Bush for being
pro war... She felt that respect for life meant being anti war as
well... I disagree with her anti abortion postion... I am pro choice,
but I admire the woman for being consistant... why aren't the so called
"pro life" people also anti war and anti death penalty? It probably is
hard for non extremists to get power these days, but Jimmy Carter and
Bill Clinton were elected, so occasionally it can still happen, though
I bet after 9/11 it's much tougher...

Except the Christian fundamentalist nutcases don't saw off people's
heads for committing the capital crime of apostasy, or bury women in the
ground and toss small rocks at them for 3 hours until they die, for the
capital crime of adultery, or start massive riots resulting in the
deaths of scores of people if someone prints a cartoon mocking Jesus, or
blow up scores of people daily in an attempt to establish a radical
theocratic state.

But other than some microscopic details like that, yeah, I guess I can
see how they share some similarities.

I share the same revulsion at those acts of "justice". I saw a tv
documentary recently about a 16 year-old girl in Iran being publicly
hanged for "crimes against chastity". Turns out she had been abused by
a "man" in his 50's since she was 13. Can you guess what happened to
the man? Got in it one! Bugger all. They also do horrendous things to
gay people, like beat them with rocks and sticks, dowse them in petrol
and burn them alive.

However, fundamentalist Christians have invaded other countries
inflicting countless deaths, tortures, rapes and murders; they've
killed people for the capital crime of carrying out an abortion; they
try to restrict freedom of thought and expression; they try to deny
people potential life-saving treatments by banning stem-cell research;
they try to impose their blinkered world view by trying to introduce
"creation science" into school curricula on an equal basis as
evolution.

A quantitative difference, perhaps (although it's debatable who's
actually worse), but not a qualitative one. Their goal is the same.

The senate may be in reach for the democrats who need a 6 seat swing to
take control. But the party's relying on centrist candidates to come
through in this election. I'm in Memphis today and tomorrow where all
the talk is around the Tennessee democratic senate candidate Harold
Ford Jr. He has some strong conservative positions, believing a
government's success is defined by its ability to defend itself...and
opposition to same-sex marriage and late-term abortions. But he blasts
republicans on the war, homeland security and immigration. He embraces
his faith unashamedly sharing quips like "I love Jesus, I can't help
it," scaring some and thrilling others.

Centrist candidates must win in Missouri (McCaskill/Michael J. Fox
video) and Virginia as well...altogether 33 seats are up for election.

The concept of 2 political parties is flawed/outdated. Maybe the
Hatfields and McCoys existed in such extremes, but I see our political
spectrum as more of a complex 3 dimensional multi-tiered
matrice...affiliations among citizens connected at a subatomic level as
if by strings accross the space/time continuum...

Oops, was thinking about my next post there at the end...

do you consider *all* christian fundamentalists to be nutcases, or just a
select few?

If "fundamentalist" means accepting the bible to be literally true and
through that acceptance a desire to impose their view of the world on
everyone else, regardless of serious flaws in such acceptance and the
wishes of others, then yes.

It's very, very sad that hateful, divisive issues like these are
overemphasized and are considered being "pro values", while all the
positive things that relate to helping people are not emphasized nearly
as much in comparison...

We're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one. I don't see
them as even remotely equal, not even close, neither in effects nor in
goals. I'm genuinely astounded everytime I see this comparison. And
I'm an atheist.

Well, on the one hand you have murderous fundamentalists and on the
other you have the muslim terrorists. I can live with agree to
disagree. Oh, and I'm an atheist, too.

But, in a small way, aren't we all?

The important thing is that at least neither of us are Canadian.
