| | | my 18 yr old wants to get a credit card... she called me today for advice, and it's just making me sick to my stomach.
i have such a bad feeling that she is going to get herself into terrible
debt in no time at all. she's only been out of the house since july and she
already owes her roommate $600. now she wants a credit card. this is a
disaster waiting to happen. :/ i gave her all the reasons to stay FAR away
from getting a credit card, but she's 18 and extremely independent and she
isn't going to listen to me. she's like her daddy, she has to learn
everything the hard way.
*sigh*

How about a debit card instead? |

she already has one of those, unfortunately. and she hasn't learned yet
that using it at the mall costs her bigtime in fees each month.
she has so much to learn. it's so scary. i tho't i'd feel more relieved of
worries when she moved out, but i find myself worrying about her as much as
ever, if not more! |

I know, it is VERY scary watching them take those steps and not being
able to prevent the hard knocks. My son will be 20 in December, and has
been away in Texas since he was 17. I still agonize over all of it.
Tell her to start with a secure card. It works li9ke a ebit, you can
only use what you have, and it really helps with learning to discipline
yourself. It's also a great way to develop good credit if you use it
correctly.

I wish she could talk to my daughter,
several of her friends, or many folks
her age who ended up with thousands of
dollars in debt for dinners they
couldn't remember, clothes they never
wore, etc., etc., etc. I know of a
couple of bankruptcies for people 25
years old. Years of trying to build back
up to a decent credit rating.
But she probably wouldn't listen to them
either. They sure didn't listen.
*sigh*

i wish she would do just that, but she doesn't have any money to put down on
the card. :/ i did tell her to set herself a low credit limit, and she
said she would, but i bet she'll raise it in no time. i can see her getting
very carried away with a credit card...viewing it as "free money" and all. |

yeah, exactly. even her boyfriend (who is 21 and in quite a bit of credit
card debt himself) tried talking her out of it, but she won't listen. she
says we're all being mean to her about it. i told her we weren't being
mean, we were just trying to keep her from making the same mistakes we made!
how is that being mean? but she wants this very badly, and nobody will be
able to talk her out of it. she's very stubborn! |

| | | Re: my 18 yr old wants to get a credit card... You and your hubby must tell her (and then stick to your guns)
that you are not able nor willing to help her out when she finds
herself in debt.
My sister in law got herself way into debt and my mother in law
bailed her out. She didn't learn anything from it and now she and her
husband are deep in debt and mom isn't able to help this time.
Glad my wife is the one from that family that knows how to budget.
They really need to teach finance to high school kids. Show them how
bad things get when you only pay the minimum each month on a card.
We don't even have a debit card. By having to take the time to fill
out the check it makes us more aware of the money we are spending.
Too easy to and thoughtless to just swipe a piece of plastic. At least
they got the term right. All these people using their cards; at the end
of the month when they see how little they have left, they say,
"who swiped all my money?"

well, she's already well aware of that, i can assure you!
thnx myron...its hard watchin your kids make these kinds of mistakes. you
find yourself wanting to protect them so badly...only you can't protect them
from themselves. |

ouch. i wish i had some good advice, but i guess there's not
much you can do if she's set on it. i'm glad i've got a few more
years to go before my kid makes the same kind of mistake.
