Every once and a while one of my fans starts making a lot of noise, but
since there's so many in the computer I can't figure out which one it
is.

I can usually fix mine by turning it off for a minute, and then it runs
for about a week before it gets noisy again.

There's a noisy fan in the PC I'm sorting out at the present. I've
tracked it down to the video card, which doesn't help much; how do you
change the fan on one of those?

You either hack something on (I prefer using Panaflo 80mm fans because
they're nice and quiet) and just a bunch of epoxy and things are held
nicely.
This is assuming that it's out of warranty. While they're *in* warranty
I often complain to the RMA dept. that the fan has died so I have 1 or 2
spares.
Little fans don't last, and their efficiency/size is lousy so the RPMs
are often quite high.
Lastly, depending on whether you need the PCI slots below you can use a
Big Ass Heatsink designed for something else and attach it with thermal
epoxy (careful with that stuff). Depending on the card you may not need
a fan at all after that.
There's also items like the Zalman VF900 (have a Zalman on the CPU too),
I have one of those on my 6800GT, which is currently at 40°C. The other
video card has a stock heatsink (BFG...heavy round lug of copper, that I
sanded to *flat* and mirror shiny) and it has to sit between cards. So
it runs at ~60°C right now. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835118001
It would bake that card if I didn't have a 120mm fan on some home-bent
aluminum brackets that have it rigged to blow air across all the add-in
cards.
I figure this machine has 9 fans. I've got another box for archiving
files to and it's got 7 fans.
I'm not the overclocker/hardware nut I used to be, but I'm still
borderline insane on DIY PC stuff.
If you're going to replace a fan and plan on keeping the machine for a
while, get Panaflo fans. Failing that use Sunon. |

I back-up the data I change, daily. I do a fortnightly back up, too.
Given a CD recorder it's easy for me - I keep two days worth of data. If
you have more data, or want to back up programs too, you'd need a lot of
CDs, or a DVD writer.
I've had to use the backups several times, so I'm pretty strict with
myself about them.

The card's well out of warranty - it was sitting, unchanged, in the
I'net computer for six years. After I air sprayed the muck off the fan,
it packed up completely, so I had to use my spare card in it. Then the
DVD drive started making dreadful sounds and then stopped reading, so I
had to swap that for my spare.
I'm out of spares, apart from hard-drives and floppy drives. I have a
DVD ROM, I think, but no more readers. I'm going to have to spend money
- Wynne's PC needs upgrading. It's a games machine, so it won't be
cheap. I'll have to look up what's suitable and affordable.

I've got an MSI GeForce 6600GT (AGP) (still w/ 2 years warranty IIRC)
and an Asus GeForce Ti4200 Deluxe (AGP) that I've been thinking about
putting up on ebay. The 6600GT is a pretty solid gaming card and so is
the Ti4200 depending on what kind of pixel pushing you need.
Bit of a PITA to sell trans-atlantic, but let me know if you're
interested. I'll certainly give you a good price for not having to
hassle with ebay. |

How much do you want for each? I'm looking for a videocard upgrade.

Hell, knock a bit off of whatever the ebay average selling price is. I'm
not looking to get rich, just let me know what seems to be the
prevailing fair price. You're the stay at home ebay dad!
I have *all* the kit for both too...bundled games/video dongles. The
Asus card comes with those funky Kim Jong Il glasses that are LCD panels
for 3D action.
I have 3 heatsink/fans for the Asus card. 1 with a fan that started
getting a bit noisy on me, but I caught it early and it shut up ASAP
with a drop of oil... The other two HSFs are brand new and the chunk of
aluminum that's mounted on there is lapped, so you'd just wanna switch
fans via screws. (Also you don't have to deal with the arctic silver
which is a "stringy" thermal compound IMO). |

I'll give you $50 for the GeForce 6600GT.

Given a reasonable price, I'm minded to have one.
