yes, it's advanced. well past high school (or remedial) algebra.
basic string theory requires GR (general relativity) and QFT (quantum field
theory) which build on differential geometry, quantum mechanics, classical
mechanics, special relativity, differential equations, etc.
more advanced string theory uses K-theory, Lie algebras, non-commutative
geometry, etc.
