I had a list of jobs on the fridge and
what the rate was. It worked pretty well
-- but I did worry that I'd be raising
little capitalists who weren't connected
to "doing" for the good of the
community. It turned out very okay,
though, and gave them some power to earn
more if they wanted some "thing".

The thing is Gayle, capitalism has given the highest living standards in
human history. Look at what market incentives have done to China.
Parents used to say "eat all the food on your plate, there are people
starving in China." Now we worry about the Chinese economy overwhelming
ours.
The drive to maximize profits is what drives our ruthless pursuit of
efficiency. Efficiency is what ultimately determines living standards.
If your little capitalists find a way to build a better mousetrap, how
is that a priori a bad thing? By improving worker productivity, your
little capitalists make everything more affordable for the Little Guy.
That seems like a good thing to me. |

Oh, for sure, it worked out. But I did
worry that they'd look at work *only*
self-centerdly in terms of pay and not
as a community contribution as well. But
they have good hearts and pretty big
social radar. Don't get me wrong, Thor,
I'm a big fan of capitalism. I'd hoped
they'd also get a streak of "from each
according to their ability; to each
according to their need" along with
"wash kitchen floor - $3". And they did.
They often helped out for 'free', too.

I don't really remember about weekly allowances. when each of my kids
turned 13, they got a visabuxx card, a secure card, like a debit. After
this point, they got a quarterly allowance, every 3 months, and they
had to buy their own clothes as well as all their personal/social
stuff.
They resist all the designer fads a lot better when they are paying for
their own clothes.

nothing wrong with that, ms gayle. that instills a strong work ethic
instead of an "entitlement" attitude in them. |

When I was in grade school I got 0.75 a week by Junior High until I started
working my mom gave me $10.00 a month. That was my portion of child support
that my father paid. I started working when I was 15 then the allowances
ended.
My kids never got an allowance. I couldn't afford to pay them cash for
their upkeep so to speak. I felt like them having a roof over their heads
and food in their mouths was their allowance for doing things around the
house.

I never got allowance either. With seven kids on a truck driver's wage
there wasn't enough money to give to us. Once in a great while my mom
would buy something I had wanted, and that was good enough for me.

That's how we worked it in my home. If they wanted something really bad I
would pitch in, but they would find odd things to do for ppl in the
neighborhood, like mow lawns, walk dogs, take garbage out for the seniors,
snow shoveling. I would match whatever it was they earned. This would be
over a matter of a month at least. If I came into some money, like tax time
I would get them something really nice then. It's good, both of them work
now, my son has been working since he was 15 and my daughter started working
2 days after her 16th birthday and is buyer her own stuff too, I guess it
taught them some values. |

What was your relationship like with your parents after you left home? |

Ah, I forgot the context of this post. Yes, helping for the good of the
family is a Good Thing. I don't recall getting an allowance
specifically tied to chores, we just had to help around the house. Set
the table/clear the table, and Saturday was cleaning day. And helping
the community is a good thing too, I just get my panties all bunched up
when people attack "capitalism", as if some other system has done better
at rising living standards across the board, including for the poor. If
you care about the poor, it seems to me that you would support a system
that has the best probability of truly raising their living standards.
The logical thing to do, so it seems to me, would be to look to those
countries who have the highest living standards for the poor and working
classes. |
