That's one reason I like football
better. Here's a photo of my guys
playing in a big snow storm: http://www.absolutenow.com/photos/10118100.html
Folks had to bring shovels to clear out
their seats.

Great picture. Our football can be similar but you should see the
conditions rugby players will play in: hurricane force winds,
horizontal rain, covered head to toe in mud, blood, sweat and snot with
half their teeth missing, their nose broken in two places and a
dislocated shoulder, only to declare, "fantastic game". Nutters.
On the same subject I remember reading about a game between two
university sides, one of which had a few 3rd year medics in it. One of
their number dislocated his hip and, instead of waiting for the
ambulance to take him to hospital, the medics decided to relocate his
hip joint. Which they managed successfully. However, it's a true saying
that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing: as they relocated the hip
joint they took one of his testicles up into the socket with it. He
split his vocal cords screaming. You may now uncross your legs. |

Here's a football game!

Oh, yeah, I did. Fantastic photos! I'm
heading for sleep so I won't ask you the
difference between UK football and
rugby. But maybe I'll google when I wake up.
After all, if yer gonna watch the World
Series -- which, let's be honest here,
includes one country only (unless ya
count the 1 Canadian team) -- the least
I can do is try to be slightly more
global in my familiarity with sports.
Outside of the Olympics.
I don't much like soccer, though.

I think we're a bit at cross-purposes: football *is* soccer, though no
one calls it that. It isn't known as "the beautiful game" for nothing.
When you see it played to it's highest level, it's a joy to watch. And
it's been scientifically proven to be the most exciting team ball sport
there is because of the chance of unexpected results and fraught
endings. |

Science, bah! Excitement is in the eye,
or somewhere, of the beholder, eh? I
just can't "see" what's going on. Not
enough action that I can understand. I'm
not sayin' it's not happening, just that
I can't see the, um, delicate nuances of
the play. It did take a lot of time for
U.S. football to become visible to me,
though. I can't really "see" hockey,
either, probably for the same reasons I
can't figger soccer out. 2 mobs going
back and forth and occasionally a round
thing coming out.
It's not the game, I'm sure, just me.

He-he! I admit that when football is bad it's *really* bad and can be
one of the most boring things ever, but when it's played properly it's
breath-taking. This years' World Cup, fr'instance, Argentina scored one
of the best team goals ever, 24 consecutive passes, none misplaced, no
desperate running to get into position, each player knowing where every
other was, the opposition played around and through with little chance
to regain the ball. And the cheeky little back-heeler to set up the
goal. Stunning.
The frame rate of this ain't too good and doesn't really do it justice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnOGx7DL-CQ
Of course it helps if you've got an emotional connection. I can watch
other teams play and enjoy the skills on display in a detached and calm
manner but when *my* teams play, oh jebus! Every decision, for or
against is like, "Ya bastard! The ref is cheatin', the f**kin ref is
cheatin'! How much are they tossers payin him?! He's diving! Diving,
cheatin' bastard! That's a f**kin penalty! Send him aff, cheatin' get.
Break his f**kin legs! Intae him!" etc., etc., etc. I get a wee bit
carried away.. ;o) |

lost over at youtube. I like some of the
