The msvcr71.dll file is a 32-bit file that holds various functions used
by .NET programs. The name comes from Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
library, version 7.1. You won't blow up, but some programs might stop
working.

It's not critical to running windows, but some other programs might stop
working.

There's no real way to tell what programs use them. You could rename the
file to find out, but be real careful.

it's a driver used by .NET applications (so if you've installed a
program that instists on .NET then you might create problems for
software relying on .NET and that would make your .NET not a very good .NET)

it's a move-on from visual basic, so .NET stuff gets installed on your
system to help out programs written in it.

ok , i'm lost , but here's what happens ,
everytime i get a virus update , when it finishes ,
i get a pop up that says the anti virus has ,
caused an error in msvcr.71.dll and the anti virus will now close ,
but it doesn't close it keeps working just fine but the pop up bugs me

Well then that means if you erased the dll your anti-virus would stop
working completely. Your anti-virus depends on .NET .

Yea, you can try to reinstall the anti-virus first, and if that doesn't
work, you could try to replace the dll with a fresh copy. I'll try to
find that file when I get back from the store.

should i just run the installer over the existing program ,
or delete and start all over ,
its a two hour down load then another hour getting updates ,
i really don't wanna go through all that again

Or the bitch might rely on .net 2, which won't cause harm to reinstall
either

..net 1.1: http://tinyurl.com/95zt
..net 2: http://tinyurl.com/8vgak

And, yes they're different...some programs require 1.1 and some require
2.0...they're also usually sitting in the optional section of Windows
Update, where the stuff you don't usually want sits.

Each of them is about a 23 MB download, so it might do you best to check
for info on which version of .net your AV software needs.

I know of a number of software programs that are not "corporate" and
will tell you quite outright which you need. Notebook Hardware Control
is one that comes to mind - I suggested it to a fried so he could lower
the voltage of his laptop and get better battery life but he didn't
install .Net 2.0 and it pissed him off to no end until I pointed out the
part he didn't read on the download page.

That doesn't surprise me, you have a flair for deleting all manner of
