Default 10,000 uses for test strip cannisters

I wonder if anyone has creative ideas for using the cannisters that most
test strips come in. Some of them are about the same size as a 35mm film
cannister, but much heavier duty - some I've seen are a bit smaller.

I use some for storing computer screws, and some in my fishing equipment.
My daughter took several last year for sorting out beads for crafts
projects.

Any others??

they go into the garage here for sorting out small screws, nuts and washers
the kidlet uses them for the eensy specialty pieces of lego for building a
kit
i find they are handy for earrings and rings and the like when i'm
travelling
that's about all (anything that we used to use film canisters for)

When our 2 boys were small, as in about 2 years old, a cousin of my wife's
babysat for them one weekend while my wife and I were away. When we came
back, the cousin told us that the kids had taken long naps every afternoon.
We wondered how they had done it, since our kids were finicky, at best, when
it came to naps.

This was in the middle of summer. The cousin pulled up a chair on our lawn,
about 20 yards (and four steps up) from where our car was parked. He put a
pail of water next to his lounge chair. He gave each of the boys a little
film cannister and told them to wash the car, which they were thrilled to
do.

So all morning the two ran up and down, filling their film cannisters from
the pail and running down the stairs and 20 yards out to pour the water on
the car, and then back. No wonder they were tired!

I always wonder about carrying unlabeled pills on me. I know that if you try
to cross borders with unlabeled pills, Customs will stop you and want to
know what you're carrying. You can't board a commercial aircraft anymore
with unidentified pills, and for international flights they want to see your
name on the Rx.

In these crazy unsettling times, wouldn't it make more sense to carry
around meds in containers that are duly labeled with the pharmacy details?

I had no problem as recently as June of this year. I travel with a
7-day pill sorter that contains dozens of loose prescription meds. No
one has ever commented on it. On the other hand, I have one Rx that is
a yellow powder. I used to carry that in a zip-loc bag but no longer
do so.

You make a very good point, Jay... When I travel overseas, I don't even take
vitamins that way, because I don't want to have to answer a bunch of
questions. Being detained and watched like a bug under a microscope is not
very much fun, in a foreign country. That happened to me in Spain one time,
only for a short while, though. Lucky for me, everything checked out, and
they found nothing in my luggage that was a problem ;-)

I was thinking of local driving mostly... and only vitamins and those things
for which I have a prescription, like my blood pressure pills and metformin
(until fairly recently). I may be going back on the metformin next week,
after my bloodwork... We'll see.

Well, if I were planning on flying or crossing a border might give it a
thought, but fo rhaving pills I need when eating n a restaurant or at a
kiddush, a little film container is much smaller than a med bottle.

Most of mine are too, though I do keep a couple around in case I want a
small used-lancets container -- smaller than the spice-jar I usually use.

For travel, yes, at least if you're going through any kind of screening.

But just *try* to get an extra, smaller, labeled container from the
pharmacy. They act like they think you're asking for a controlled substance
or something. I haven't even asked my m.o. pharm for one. Some of my
prescriptions come with 90 pills in a container that could hold several
hundred! Even my 270 Prandin pills used less than a third of the space.

I do have some old small containers, saved from when I started a med & got
only a 30day supply. I'll use those if I have to.

For gardeners, they can be used to save seed from one year to the next.
Those who are truly ardent and like to hybridize, pollen can also be stored
in them. They seal well and can be safely put in the freezer without
worrying about moisture getting in and will keep for several years. I give
mine to such people. Me---I'm too lazy.

I like your idea. I was wondering what to do with my used lancets, when I am
in Australia later this year. You have solved my problem. Thank you.

I use those little film containers for carrying cream for my coffee
when I'm out. Never had a leak yet. :-)

I carry a one week sorter filled with pills, but I also have the

Remarkably, those cannisters are just the perfect
size to store one (T2) serving of chocolate cake.

** ... ** Is this phrase (labeled below) true ?

Does it hold for travel outside US ?
I know that US is almost psychotic about travelling with medecines,
but I thought it was limited to the US territory.

Some friends of ours went to Turkey. They were warned to have not only their
original bottles with pharmacy labels, but also letters from their doctors
stating what the meds were for, with the precise dosages.

Hi Frank,

It is a small ceremonial Jewish worship time before
shabbat and Jewish holidays at which a small amount of kosher wine is
consumed in a prayerful setting, at which certain scripture is read
and prayers are said... Nothing is eaten or drunk on Friday night
after the sun goes down, before Kiddush is made. Then there are
really nice meals and a number of good traditional recipes that many
people enjoy with family and friends who may attend. A Kiddush can be
a really nice occasion.

Wendy can probably tell you more about how she does it. I do not
consider myself Jewish, but it does run in the family, so to speak, so
I am well acquainted with many of the customs and observances. Right
now, I have one grandchild and two nephews in Hebrew schools.

My wife takes a very small dose of daily aspirin. I break a
300mg soluble aspirin tab into six pieces to get 45-50mg
doses.

However, we found that soluble aspirin deteriorates quickly
in humid atmosphere. I found that old test strip containers
are perfect for long-term storage of the broken tablets
because of their moisture absorbent caps.

I carry all the pill packets, but it's impossible to have
unopened ones when you travel in a way that crosses
international borders multiple times over a few weeks.

So I also carry:

a 7-day dispenser container;
an open prescription form for each medication signed by the
doctor, both as proof of need and in case I need a refill
en-route; and
a doctor's letter detailing my various ailments and
pharmaceutical needs.

I've only needed it once in over thirty international
flights; but that once, in a US airport, was worth it.

I take almost all my meds in my carry-on bag in case the
checked bags go missing but I also have a "spare" set of
meds in my checked baggage just in case an over-zealous TSA
twit confiscates the carry-on meds. It's my Irish ancestry;
to be sure, to be sure.

You know what they say about the luck of the Irish, Alan ...

It is always wise to take precaution and to be skeptical when things
seem to be going too well....

Accu-Check Aviva cannisters nicely hold six glucose tabs.

Also, they make a great inhaler for stuffy noses. Drill one hole in the
bottom, and one in the top. Fill the cannister with cotton laced with
eucalyptus oil and/or mentholatum.

When I travelled to Boston last year nobody on either side of the border
paid the slightest interest in my pill bottles. Mind you they didn't look at
much else except my husband's belt buckle and our shoes.

I don't know whether this is creative, but I work for a
health care provider. As you can imagine, there is a bit
of paranoia concerning nything that has touched blood.

So any strip I use at work goes into an older container,
clearly marked USED. When I can't pack any more into it,
I take it to a clinical area and let a nurse dispose of it
"with extreme prejudice." :-)

Thanks; Will, (a mine of information, as ever).

You don't say whether it was found necessary that they took
all of those precautions.

I've been to Turkey several times Istanbul (2) and Antalya (2),
and I was never asked about my meds, clearly visible through
the Xray scanners.
In fact, I ran out of one med while I was in Istanbul, staying with
a friend, went to a pharmacy with just the notice inside the box
describing the molecule etc., and bought another box - in France
this would not have been possible as the med was on a restricted list.

So, no, Turkey have never been a problem for me ...

What about the US ?

You're absolutely correct, Jay.

Anything that is going to be ingested should never be stored in a test
strip canister (or a film canister, for that matter). These types of
containers are not food grade plastic and chemicals can leach from them.
Some test strip canisters (OneTouch) have the drying agent right in the
lining of the canister.

One type of plastic isn't all plastics, and some plastics are rather
nasty. After all, you don't still use margarine containers in the
microwave, do you?

Good food for thought, Vicki. So much for the pills in the briefcase
idea... Maybe that's why I have been feelin a little sluggish lately.
Hmmm.

I've been using the film containers for my cream for many years,
though it's always used within an hour of leaving my house.
