| | | A 50 year T1 Story As usual I came across this while looking for something
completely different. Well worth reading, not only for his
story but for the way treatment has evolved.

This article is for all of you parents who have had your
child diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and that your child
can live a full life with the disease." http://tinyurl.com/2463dl or http://www.timesfreepress.com/absolu...360&zoneid=123
Do we have any Joslin or similar 50 year medallists here? I
know we have a few who can relate to his story.

My husband was diagnosed in 1952, at age 19. We still have
no idea whether he's Type 1 or 2.

That was an incredibly touching story. It made me cry to think of what he
had to go through as a child.

Has he got a medal? Did he go on insulin immediately, if not
how long was the honeymoon?

He has never been closely monitored by an endocrinologist, so we
know nothing about the medal system.
His early diabetes predates my time with him, but this is what
he tells me. He was diagnosed during a routine checkup for a summer
job he was getting. At the time, he was seriously overweight so he
spent a year getting into shape. When this did not pull the numbers
down enough, his doctor prescribed insulin. I think this was an
endocrinologist, an old-fashioned one; Eli, my husband, tells me that
he had a sign in his office that read [and I'm not remembering its
exact phrasing] "If you want to treat your diabetes with medication,
please go elsewhere".
He's been on insulin ever since, beef/pork NPH until it went off
the market, Lantus now. He takes Lantus 2 times daily, 15 units
each time.
His numbers are terrible; his health isn't. I shouldn't be
posting right now. We're preparing for a short [about 15mi] group bike
ride we're taking this morning...aside from insulin, his major method
of combatting the disease has been not to own a car and to get most
places by bicycle or foot.

"His numbers are terrible; his health isn't." Considering
that you both obviously are active and exercise I can
understand the good health; the numbers would still be a
worry for me. But I won't criticise, it's his life and he's
been at this 48 years longer than I have.
Fascinating attitude from the endo:-)

Your husbands story is quite interesting... even though, i'm not a doctor
nor anyone else here, I'd have to say by what you said with your husband
being seriously overweight and it being caught on a routine exam, that
he's
a T2.
You don't say if your husband has any complications? I understand you say
his health is great... but what makes it so great? Does he see his doctor
regularly?
Such as every 6mons or every year for routine diabetic blood workup? What
is
his A1C? What does his Lipid profile look like?
Sorry for the questions, just wondering is all.. What one considers "great
health"
and what someone else does could be two different things.
Thanks for posting.

I'd be 105; I'm not sure I want to make the milestone,
having cared for a few in their declining years. But ask me
