advantages to taking one diabetes pill rather than another?
http://diabetes.org/tipoftheday.jsp?...s=233972434334
Question:
Are there advantages to taking one diabetes pill rather than another?
Answer:
Which pill you take depends on what is causing your high blood
glucose. If you need to produce more insulin, sulfonylureas and
meglitinides help.
Sulfonylureas have been around longest and work well, but can cause
hypoglycemia and weight gain. You can't use them if you're allergic to
sulfa drugs or have kidney problems.
Meglitinides (Prandin) are taken before meals, so if you don't eat,
you don't take it, which is handy. It's okay with kidney problems, but
weight gain is possible.
Two pills increase how much glucose gets into your cells:
thiazolidinediones (glitazones) and biguanides (metformin). You take
glitazones only once a day, and they lower triglyceride levels. But
they cause weight gain. Metformin does not cause weight gain or low
blood glucose and improves blood fats. Side effects, however, are
nausea and diarrhea, and you can't take it with kidney, heart, or
liver problems, or if you drink alcohol excessively.
Alpha-glucosidase inhibitors block absorption of carbohydrate in your
intestines, keeping glucose lower after a meal. There's no weight
gain, but gas, bloating, and diarrhea are side effects. Talk with your
doctor to decide which pill will work best for you.

Goes to show that the "Tip of the Day" is not affected by
"scare stories" on other parts of the ADA web-site:
http://tinyurl.com/388j6m or
http://www.diabetes.org/diabetesnews...anpaewEDIT.xml
One would think that someone in the organisation would vet
these "Tips" before posting them; apparently not.

Or even talk to your doctor to see if it's better for you to
use diet and exercise first - or even whether insulin may be
your best option.
Which pill was best for you, Kurt?

Meaning that since I'm not a Type 2 you think I shouldn't post a link
that has Type 2 information in it. Well, unlike you and Glinda from
Oz I don't discriminate nor am I divisive when it comes to offering
diabetes information to diabetics. Should one have the disease or
condition in order to find a link, or refer someone to a site that
might help them? Do I have to have cataracts in order to post a
health article about cataract treatment? Should I have an ogran
transplant before I can steer someone to the National Kidney
Foundation if they ask a question about possible kidney problems as a
diabetic? Posting an article or a link in this newsgroup may not be
of interest to you, or some of your kindred spirits, but others who
aren't faux know-it-alls like you may find it of some use. Just about
everything I post is without interpretation and conclusion from me.
Wish you would follow that example because frankly you taint anything
you post by telling people what they should get from it.
But I doubt you really believe that your star bellied sneetches should
be separate as you constantly comment and post things about and for
both T1's and T2's. You also comment on the American medical system,
yet you live in Australia. You commment on a myriad of other things
that you are not part of. Nothing wrong with that, unless of course
you shake a hypocritical finger at others for daring to think outside
of their own little world.
Which pill is best for me? Currently just Altace and a baby aspirin.
Twenty years from now, maybe Viagra? Hard to tell.

Goodness. We've hardly corresponded for a while now; I
didn't realise I'd hit such a sensitive nerve or how far we
are separated by our common language. Translation please:
"star bellied sneetches" (yes I can guess - but I'm
fascinated to know for sure:-)
Who is Glinda? Is this something to do with Seuss?
Oh, and this is actually a negative, not a positive IMO:
"Just about everything I post is without interpretation and
conclusion from me."
If you are simply going to post a repeat of every new "Tip
of the Day" and other ADA web-site quotes - just post the
link every day for newbies. If you're going to post
something, it can help to give some indication of whether
you are for or against or just neutral, unless it's a quote
of something like policy guidelines, such as the IGT/IFG
quote I just posted.
Any comment on the Avandia aspect?
Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

The star bellied sneetches are from a Dr. Suess book. I can't remember
which one.

Refers to the good witch from The Wizard of Oz:

Thank you Julie.
I suspected something similar, but I had a sheltered
up-bringing on tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, the
Gum-nut twins, and the big, bad, banksia men.

I suspect "Glinda" did too - although I did see the mythical
land of Oz as well as living in the real one:-)
All is clear again.

Cute! Personally I couldn't get into Suess much beyond when I was maybe 3
or 4. Go Dog Go did teach me to read though, as did Hop On Pop. The rest
was just too weird for me.
