Default Another bg testing recommendation

From the American Diabetes Association 67th Annual Scientific Session:

http://www.endocrinetoday.com/200709/glucose.asp

Check out the A1c's of the people in the study. I love this statement:

"The lower frequency of SMBG was not associated with an increased risk for
serious adverse events, such as hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia or impaired
quality of life, according to Scherbaum." I'd love to see the quality of
life of these people in a few years time.

High frequency testing equals 4 times weekly!

The headline says it all:
"Monitoring glucose once weekly as effective as four times
weekly"

Probably true to a degree. There are minimum effective
thresholds for many activities. That doesn't make the
activity wrong, just the application.

However, I could tailor a program for a newby that would
make four times weekly very effective over time; it depends
on when you test and the actions you take as a consequence.

Quote from article: "HbA1c was roughly 7.2% in both groups."

Control? That was my A1c at diagnosis.

On the one hand, that's sad. On the other hand, when I stop to think about
it, it could make sense for people like me. There have been times when I
tested like a fiend. As often as every half an hour. And what did it get
me? Nothing. Nada. Not a thing. There was nothing *I* could do to lower
my BG any more. Exercise was raising it. Even a small amount of exercise
like walking. I was already eating next to no carbs trying to get the
numbers low. Didn't work. I had no insulin and no Dr. would prescribe it
for me because they didn't see my numbers as a problem.

So really there are times when I think it is just silly for me to test to
begin with. Mostly twice a day. Sometimes more, particularly if I think I
am having a hypo. I do still get them but infrequently. But really for me,
most of the time, my tests seem pointless. If I think my numbers are too
high, I show them to my Dr. and I am told I am doing well. So why do I
bother? I don't know...

What's really annoying is when professional experts try to get you to
follow the regimes which studies like this have shown make ill people
a bit less ill, in order to improve your own health, which to begin
with is already better than any of the people studied ever got to!
