Appointment

Conner had her 3-month endo appointment today. It went really well, with a
couple of exceptions. Her A1C was 7.1%, down from 11.7% at hospital
admission. The doctor was thrilled with this. They took an X-ray of her
hand to get a baseline on her growth because she is "small" for her age.
Her height is on par with a 5 year old, rather than 6 1/2. So they want to
see if her bone growth is that of a 5 or 6 1/2 year old. They're worried
about her growth hormone levels, but won't have test results back for a week
or so. The only bad part of it was when they did the blood draw...she can
spot a phlebotomist from a mile away, and hates them all! Hopefully that
will get better with time. They did adjust some dosages, but not too
drastically. Just thought I would let everyone know what is going on with
her.

what an excellent A1c update ! ! ! woo hoo ! ! !

Thanks so much for the update, it's so good to hear that things are
moving in the right direction.

Here's a tip for painless blood draws; get the doc to rx EMLA or some
other anesthetic cream. Just leave some on the area they take the blood
from, wrapped in plastic wrap, for 30 minutes before. She'll be
comfortably numb and won't have to dread blood draws any more. :-)

Good news about the droppng A1c! she should geet more acceptin gof the
vampire, as I call them, as she ages, perhaps learning to ake bad jokes
aobu tit.

One question abou tthe size issue. Are you a tal or short family? I
recall by 4'11" size 2 daughter being told by the health team at her
daughter's 9 month check-up that they were worried because the child was
in the 5th percentile on length and weight. they never ooked at the
child,s tiny mother to see if there might be some explaination there.

That child is now 25, about 5'2" and a size 2 also. The fruit didn't fall
far from the tree.

We talked about that very thing today. My husband is 5'11", but I am 5'1",
and both grandmas are 4'11". The Dr. sat and disputed the whole heredity
thing. Pi$$ed us both off, but it's not worth arguing, because no matter
what you are wrong. Conner is also in the 5th percentile, but has always
been short and petite for her age. All of my girls are, as was I as a
child. Some docs just don't get it.

Silly bugger I have two cousins (sisters) who are quite
short and so are their husbands, and no surprise at all -
all their offspring have been short right thru childhood. As
teenagers and young adults they are much the same size as
their parents.

I noticed my doctor (who also acts as phlebotomist for my
blood draws) was the least painful I've ever had. There are
times where I actually don't feel it. I've had occasions
where I was chatting to him as he worked preparing to do the
draw, then looked down to see he was filling the various
vials already.

I complimented him on this, and he mentioned that as well as
the normal full medical training to be a GP he was trained
in acupuncture. This helped him to evolve an almost painless
needle technique.

It may be worth investigating whether any of your
phlebotomists have a similar background.

My sons are in their thirties. I'm 6'. One son is 4" shorter
than I, the other 5" shorter. Their mum stands on tiptoes to
approach 5'(I'm not allowed to give actual numbers:-)

Her mum was the same height, her dad is 5'7", my wife liked
my gran because she was the only person she was taller than.

That doesn't mean your docs should not investigate all
avenues - but of course hereditary background is relevant.
