Attn: HUMALOG/LANTUS support group
Hi....
I was on Humulin N and Humulin R for 20 years.... now I've switched to
Humalog-Lantus which seems to be the latest "hot setup" for insulin
therapy..
It takes a little bit of getting used to. I'm taking 25 units Humalog
and 25 units Lantus per day. I'm 64, active, with no problems besides
taking insulin.
I am looking for other people who are taking Humalog-Lantus and might
want to share some tips and/or discuss common problems such as:
Counting carbs for Humalog?
Avoiding those scary low blood sugars
Time of Day for Lantus?
Unusual (fast) properties of Humalog?
Max-min doses of Humalog?
Unexplained rises in morning BS?
etc, etc, etc

I was on Humilin R and NPH for longer than I care to remember and was
glad when my endo suggested the switch to Humalog and Lantus. For me,
it has proven to be the best combination to achieve the best control.
My last a1c was 5.4 so it seems to be doing well for me...well, the
insulin plus my own significant efforts.
> Counting carbs for Humalog?
This will vary for each individual. For me, it works out to about 1
unit of Humalog for ever 30g of carbohydrate. I know others in here
have a different ratio.
> Avoiding those scary low blood sugars
I am very hypo sensitive and since I only take a couple of units of
Humalog with meals I never really get too scary of lows. If I do feel
I am down in the 60's I have a half a small cup of juice or half of a
banana and I'm good to go. Fortunately, I have never had a low that
put me out or required a 911 call.
> Time of Day for Lantus?
I take about 4 units at Midnight (once a day). I usually go to bed
around 3am and get up around 10am. One shot lasts 24 hours (or more).
Some here split their dose because they report that Lantus doesn't last
24 hours for them.
> Unusual (fast) properties of Humalog?
I always inject after I eat because Humalog works pretty quick for me.
Added to that, I never eat and then sit. I am very active and feel
that the worst thing to do after eating a meal is to sit at the
computer or watch TV.
> Max-min doses of Humalog?
Depending on what I eat...1 to 4 units. I am definitely a low doser.

Like I said, I've been very happy with the Humalog + Lantus insulin
therapy. Of course, being diabetic, there will be times when you get a
reading that makes absolutely no sense. I'm happy if 80% of the time I
can predict what my numbers will be. The good thing about Humalog is
that if you test enough, you can bolus or eat to correct the
unsatisfactory number.
Best,
Kurt

Many of these topics are not unique to Humalog/Lantus. Rather they are
generic to any insulin regimen, or to any fast acting insulin, or to
any of the 24-hour long-lasting insulins, or to diabetes (even
non-insulin-dependent) in general.
And all have been discussed here or in m.h.d. repeatedly over the past
15 years.
Don't concentrate so much on the tools, but rather on the approaches.
Tim.

Hi
I dont know if this is any use but I am on Lantus alone for steroid enduced
type 2 diabetes + metformin s/r.
But my Lantus I take in a morning as that way I am taking it alongside the
steroid tablets I take permanently for brittle asthma.
Ive not been on Lantus long but I did read somewhere that people were
beginning to find it more useful to take Lantus in a morning than at night!
Sorry cant remember where I read it but for me (at least) mornings are best
and easiest to remember!
