| | | Changes Hi Folks,
I am a regular reader but seldom post. Just thought I would share the
results of lifestyle changes I instituted about six weeks ago.
I was diagnosed T2 in 1999 with an A1C of 8.7. Since then through diet
exercise and weight loss I have regularly been around 5.6.
Six weeks ago I changed my diet by eliminating all alcohol (mainly wine and
spirits before) , dairy(mainly ate hard cheeses before), diet sodas, and
caffeine. I now drink only water and herbal teas.
I test regularly before and 2hrs after meals. Before this change my BG
average was ~100.
Nothing much happened for about 2 weeks after I made the change, but then
for the last 4 weeks my testing results average has dropped by 10% to 90 and
under, as low as 88 at one point. Before meals many times now I am as low as
80.
I don't know exactly what it was but I suspect the wine and diet sodas were
a large part of it.
Any comments appreciated.
Thanks.....

G'day G'day David,
Congratulations. There was a time when we had a 5% club and someone
generated a cyber certificate specially to celebrate the occasion. You
certainly deserve on for making such an improvement.

There are so many changes. Firstly the ones you've mentioned. Then
there are likely to be ones you haven't considered. I say that only
because here our diets change quite markedly whether we intend it or
not as different crops come into season. You could try reintroducing
some of the items you've taken out and see what happens but why would
you bother. It could be as simple as your calorie consumption going
down. Take out wine and cheese and calories are bound to drop and that
would have nothing specifically to do with either food item.

Best wishes David and congratulations on your continued success.
Here's to more of it.

Congratulations David.
I honestly don't know why you improved, but as wine is a
staple part of my regimen and I drink a couple of glasses of
diet soft drink most days, I hope it was something
completely different:-)

There was information published locally recently from the medical community
that seemed to imply that the hormonal system could not tell the difference
between real sugar and artificial sweeteners. It implied that diet soda was
no different than full sugar sodas as far as contribution to development of
T2 diabetes.
I quit the artificial sweeteners for a different reason, although the
characterization above is also quite compelling. After years of drinking
diet sodas I found that they had started to give me an asthma like reaction
in the upper chest bronchial area.
Thanks for your input Quentin and Alan.

Short time results seems to be of little value in
getting real answers. There are too many
variables. Is seems to be the source of many
of the faulty theories. As of today you
have a lifetime disease.
It is best to take a slow approach in
finding answers.

Hi Guys
I am well aware that there is no cure for diabetes -only control.
Certainly if I eat the simple refined carbs my BG skyrockets like anyone
else in the club.
Just thought I would share what I perceived to be something incredible from
such a change. Will keep you updated.
Later...

Very nice results! But I doubt the wine has much to do with it. Maybe
the diet sodas - they seem to spark insulin release in some people,
therefore increasing fat storage.
Has your weight changed? - though it's a bit early to see changes on
that yet, maybe.

Lost about 3 pounds. in the last six weeks(163 lbs).I find my weight varies
3 lbs +- depending on the level of salty food intake/vs water -the more
water the more the weight drops. |

the diet sodas had zero to with it. If you were drinking red wine in
the amount actually recommended by diabetes specialists then it wasn't
the wine either. If you were over indulging in the wine it probably
helped to cut it back and even out. Caffeine can cause BG rises in
some people. Dairy, usually milk in excess will cause problems with
BG control because of the milk sugar ie Lactose. Hard cheeses don't
usually pose a problem unless again you were eating to excess.
No-one can really say with certainty because you give no quantities
per meal to base any comparison on.
