Default Changing Shifts

I am considering changing shifts at work. A couple of 3rd shifts are
open. Any advice I could get on adjusting my current schedule, I work
a 8 to 6 day. Test before and after meals. 3rd shift starts at 11
and is over at 8. Are there any 3rd shift folks at there? Thanks Craig

Hi Craig,

I haven't worked 3rd shift as a choice before, but have filled in for
absent 3rd shift co-workers. 3rd shifters get a meal break just like
those on other shifts, so testing, eating ought to be the same. I
never worked 3rd shift long enough to get used to it, so it really
kicked my butt, but the regulars did manage to turn their schedules
completely around and make it work. The only thing I noticed is that
although they scheduled sleep during the day, they were more likely to
get cheated out of it by external events. For example someone ringing
their doorbell (so put a sign up stating that you are a day sleeper).
Things like doctor's appts, etc., still have to be scheduled during
the day. And special events like weddings always occur during the day
or evening hours. Often rather than waste a vacation day to go to the
doctor or attend a wedding, the 3rd shifters were more likely to go
without sleep and go to work anyway. I sympathized with their choice,
but being sleep deprived isn't a great way to work, and it's not
particularly good for your health either. It seems to me, the 3rd
shifters caught more colds, etc.

That's the extent of my knowledge--such as it is. ;-)

Best regards,

I did graveyards for 11 years. When I stopped, my insulin requirements
dropped by about 20%. My endo figures I had insulin resistance because
of screwed up cortisol and seratonin levels (high/low, I don't know).

My insulin needs now are very average for a T1.

I tried hard to 'flip' my days. To bed at 11 am, up at 7 pm. Have
breakfast upon rising, not after work, etc.

The most difficult thing I found was even though I was working nights,
people around me seemed to think I was still available during the day.
If you wouldn't expect to go out at 3am, why would *they* expect you to
go out at 3pm?

In the UK, shift workers get an excess payment because any pattern
other than day shift results in excess stress and therefore illness.
When I did it, I was OK on night shift, but absolutely dire on early
shift - 6am to 2pm was the shortest shift, but the one that disrupted
my sleep patterns worst. Then we started planning kids, and the night
shift stopped looking attractive too, even with the huge bonus.

I just never slept well in the daytime - there's always just a bit too
much noise for comfort, and I never found a 100% satisfactory light
solution - or at least not one that was compatible with air flow! -
not to mention the delivery person who doesn't realise it's 4am on
your body clock...

I work 2nd shift... have worked 3rd. Simple... the average person gets up a
few hours before work, eats... goes to work... eats lunch.... comes home and
fools around for a while... eats dinner... relaxes a few hours and goes to
bed. No matter what shift you work, do it that way... don't pay any
attention to the sun.
