Default Chayote

I know this really belongs on the food NG but it gets so little traffic and
I know there are people here who have cooked this before. I've made it in
the past with cinnamon. I can't remember exactly how I did it. I think I
peeled it, cut in cubes then boiled it in water, perhaps with some Splenda
added? It has been a few years since I made it.

I plan to make it this year (for Thanksgiving) as a substitute for cinnamon
apples. Does anyone know if I can fry it? I've been frying apple slices in
a small amount of coconut oil and they come out very nicely. Would this
work?

Thanks!

I did a search and answered my own question. Yes, I can do it! Don't these
look yummy?

I have never fried it so can't help there. For sweets cook
it as you would apple, for savoury just boil plain or with
added salt.

You might like to try almond meal mixed with melted butter
and splendid as a cheesecake type base, then add the
"stewed" chayote, sort of like an apple crumble with the
crumble underneath. Refrigerating would set the butter so
the almond meal doesn't fall apart.

Since my mom and I are allergic to almonds, and both of us plus daughter is
allergic to butter, I would not try this. I will try the recipe I found
though where they are cooked first then fried, but I will use coconut oil
instead of butter. I buy the Nutiva brand and I find it lends a buttery
taste to things. I've even eaten it on a piece of bread or cracker.

Thanks!
