Default Control of diabetes if possible

I am not diabetic but my better half is t2.

Question do you folks have to measure BG after every meal ? Seems
some folks report spikes and I assume a spike is not desirable but me
an observer wonder if the average or the spike is of health issue.

Second Question what can I do to help others (Spouse) deal with
health issue? Large question I know with Carbs and HFCS all over .

Ignorant Bill

You don't have to once you have a good handle on how certain meals
affect you. I go days without testing now, but test often if my health
changes or if I eat something new or very carby. That one hour post meal
number is the key one for me.

Eat healthily yourself, shop and help or do meal prep and make it
attractive and tasty! Experiment with at least one or two new foods per
week.

Ask her to go for walks or swims or to the gym with you, or to help with
the gardening. :-)

Yes and no. Yes, until you have a knowledge of what spikes
you and what doesn't, including variations in timing of
meals and portion sizes and activity. No, because as that
knowledge grows then testing can be cut back to a
maintenance level but increased when new foods or regimens
are introduced. See
http://www.alt-support-diabetes.org/NewlyDiagnosed.htm

That recommends testing one and two hours after eating.
Personally I recommend finding her peak and testing then:

Get her to read the link I just posted and see if she will
read here herself.

If we are too rough and tumble then she may find it more
comfortable to read, or post, on the ADA Adults Type 2 board
at
http://community.diabetes.org/n/pfx/...2&firstDisc=51

I'll give her the same link and advice there:-)

I do sometimes but not always. My Endo. wants me to test when I get up and
after one meal. I didn't think this was enough so I got him to allow me
three test strips per day. For a while I was allowed unlimited strips.
When I had that I would test 10-12 times a day. They had to cut back on the
amount of strips I got because people were abusing the system and selling
the strips on Ebay.

It does help in the beginning to figure out what kinds of meals we can eat
if we can test before we eat and at two hours after eating. Some people
also test at one hour after eating. And of course test if we are not
feeling well because we could be too high or low.

You are right. You want to avoid spikes because they cause damage to the
body.

That depends on what she wants you to do, or not to do. I hate it when
people fuss over me or buy me things that they think I can eat, like
sugarless candy. Don't buy into the hype of all that sugarless stuff. If
you'll notice, the labels will often say "dietetic" and not "diabetic". It
is total carbs we must watch and many of those things have just as many
carbs as the real stuff. They also tend to contain sugar alcohols that can
act as a laxative. That being said, there are some sugar free or reduced
sugar things that I think are okay. Like sugarless gum, diet soda, and
sugar free or reduced sugar jam. Not that I eat a lot of jam, but that kind
has less carbs than the regular kind. Some people find they can eat sugar
alcohols on a limited basis. I limit my intake to gum or very tiny breath
mints. Any more than that and I'm doubled over in stomach pain.

Get in the habit of reading all labels if you are the one doing the grocery
shopping. I find with canned or prepared foods, it's often best to shop in
the organic section. Those types of foods are less likely to contain
additives that you don't want, like high fructose corn syrup. But they may
still have sugar in them so they may have more carbs than you want. The
pasta sauce I buy has just tomatoes, olive oil and seasonings in it.

Realize that if her blood sugar is too high, she may be very cranky,
unreasonable or irritable. We all react differently to low blood sugar.
I've been known to be very combative and refuse food. If she does have a
hypo, she needs to eat or drink 15g of fast acting carbs like plain sugary
candy or fruit juice. She should rest for 10 minutes, then test again and
make sure her BG (blood glucose) is up to where it should be. I remember
having a hypo once and trying to tell the person assisting me that I needed
some candy. But he didn't think diabetics were supposed to have candy.
Instead he was going to give me cheese, thinking that cheese had carbs in
it. It pays to know what to do in advance. It would be a good idea to
stash some hard candies or Sweet Tarts or some such thing in your car, just
in case. You can also buy glucose tabs at the drug store.

I'd like to thank you all for the information shared. Getting ingrid
to subscribe to usenet may be possible. I worked with VAX notes in the
80's so it was not and obstacle for me.
