| | | It's a girl I had a baby girl last night at 8:11 PM. She weighed 5 pounds 8 ounces. We
named her "Misako Lynn". My middle name is Misa and Misako means daughter of
Misa in Japanese
They had intended to wait another week but decided to induce labor. They
told me it was a slack time with no other births expected but this morning
my husband told me they were getting some disturbing readings on my monitors
and decided to induce labor. I'm glad they didn't tell me, I would have
freaked out and it might have affected the baby.
During the birth they gave me an epidural and I had very little pain until 2
hours later. Then the pain was almost unbearable, they gave a shot of
something which worked, I slept for 4 hours.
They haven't let me nurse her yet, but are pumping my breasts to feed her in
the
nursery. Judging from the amount of milk they got, I'm not sure breast
feeding will be enough, I have small breasts. They said we could go home
tomorrow or Saturday in she continues to do well.
I am probably the happiest person in the world today. I've waited so long
for this day. I can't wait to get her home and start being a real mother.

FANTASTIC! Congratulations to you both, and Hi, Misako!
Don't worry too much about the breastfeeding until you get home - small
breasts have not too much to do with it, it's how much they're stimulated
that counts, and a baby does that sooo much more efficiently than a pump.
Just relax, get plenty of liquids, eat protein with every feed... you'll do
fine.
YAAAY! <Big grin>

Andrea, you don't produce milk for a day or two, just colostrum. You'll
produce milk based upon your babie's feeding habits. Breast size has
nothing at all to do with milk supply. You'll do fine. :-)

| | | Re: It's a girl Congratulations Andrea. What a Beautiful Name.
I am surprised the Lactation Nurse didn't explain to you about when your
milk will come in and how nursing the baby will produce what the baby needs.
It is very rare for a woman not to produce enough milk for her baby. My
niece by marriage has three kids under the age of 4(practicing Catholics)
She breastfed them all...her babies get so plump on her milk...they slim
down once they are off the breast. Anyways my niece is pretty small breasted
and her babies have all done very well. If you have any worries about
Breastfeeding please tell them to your Lactation nurse...or pediatric
nurse....they probably know most of the answers I know most hospitals give
out the nurses numbers in case you have questions....

Congratulations, Andrea! What a beautiful beautiful thing to read.
And for what it's worth, you've been a "real" mother from the moment
you knew you were carrying her. The worry and work and self-sacrifice
of having a healthy baby are only the beginning. Your life is forever
changed. What a blessing.
Best to You, Terri and Misako. |

This is a case of "size does NOT matter" - breastfeeding is a supply
grows to meet demand proposition. As long as you're committed to
breastfeeding and don't succumb to the blandishments of others to
"just slip her a bottle of formula once in a while" you'll be fine.
It may require some work and the early days may not be easy but it'll
work out.
Most hospitals have a breastfeeding consultant on staff these days.
Find out who she is, get her contact information, and ride the nursing
staff until the BFC shows up in your room. If you're discharged
without such a visit keep your butt planted in a chair in your room
until the BFC makes an appearance.

I like the addition to your sig.
Congrats on Misako Lynn!
With Kid #1 (who's now 10), we bought formula to use when out in
public. We didn't bottle feed at home and at first didn't pump. By the
time Kid #3 came around (now 5), we did it all without any formula.
Not that wife is small breasted. But she does have small breasted
friends who haven't had trouble nourishing the baby. The biggest issue
is really you and she getting the hang of it. I remember how frustrated
my wife got trying to teach kid #1 to do something that neither of them
knew how to do.

Happy Birthday Mikaso ! ! !
don't worry about the milk, it takes 3 days for
production to kick in
but DO ask them to let her feed on your breasts so
that she doesn't suffer from 'nipple
confusion'........ a bottle is easier to suck out
of than a breast
and you'll be amazed when your milk does come
in.......... man that HURT me...... lol
kate (who's baby is now 12 yrs old...... where did
the time go?)
ps.... take lots of pictures NOW.. you will
treasure them for a lifetime

Hooray!!!!!This is wondrful news. Now just enjoy the baby and know tht
tiny ones drink very little milk at first at one time. Your milk supply
may well increase as her needs increase. they always say that breaast
size has nothing to do with the quantity of milk.
Happy, Happy Day!!
Happy Birthday Misako Lynn

Andrea that is the best news ever and you so deserve some
happiness. By the way, don't fret the breast feeding thing,
on average milk proper doesn't come in until the 3rd day.
What you are getting is colostrum (rich in goodies and
calories). Welcome little Misako! |

How delightful. There are lots of trials ahead but it will be thrilling and
rewarding.

When we were expecting our first grandchild I wrote a few thoughts on
raising children for the new parents.
In one of the notes I recalled skydiving and packing my own parachute. Turns
out childraising has several similarities.
So here are the things I have learned from both experiences:
Children and skydiving both require a giant leap of faith. They can be both
fun & terrifying.
Things aren't always labeled "Some assembly required". Be ready to work to
succeed.
Kids are adaptable and recover from small mistakes. Parachutes aren't as
forgiving.
There are many more people experienced at raising kids than packing
parachutes.
Statistically your chances of finding good advice are pretty high . so ask
around.
It still basically comes down to your efforts.
Others can offer advice but you still have to have faith in your decisions
and make that first step.
Once you start, you really can't turn back.
While there are a lot of small details in packing a parachute, the core
effort is keeping the lines untangled, folds straight, and assuring that air
will come under the canopy. If you understand the basic functions of a
situation, the details will often become obvious.
It feels so wonderful at the end, you'll forget the part when you were
falling out-of-control.
Enjoy the adventure.

GRATULATIONS!!! This is perfectly wonderful news. I ditto all the
advice about breastfeeding. Have a wonderful time - I am awash in
memories of 25 years ago when my daughter was born - they are vivid.
Relax, and rejoice in your beautiful baby.
