Default I've finally figured diabetes out

It's impossible to figure out.

Last three days I lost control for no apparent reason. I didn't change
anything yet my Bg's just won't stay below 120 so I am turning into a pin
cushion testing and sticking Novolog injections all over tha place. My last
test I was holding my finger to stick it when it started ooozing out of an
old pinprick - maybe that's testing to often when you can just squeeze out
a drop any old time.

I know - every body has the same lapses - but it sure does sux anyway.

Today I decided to fast - no solid food what so ever, just liquid - just in
case it's my stomach acting up.

Sniveling and whinning over - for now.

Wouldn't be nice if our ailments were physical things we could grab by the
throat and beat the crap out of? I'd like to have a few hours alone with my
diabetes monster with a dull blade and a pair of pliers.

Gene, Chief or whatever.

You have ten fingers - you're testing THAT often??

Eventually, your BG will start up as your liver starts making glucose -
that's probably not a good idea. Why not just go very low carb for a while
- that should help.

I agree it's very difficult to figure out. The only thing I've come up
with that seems fairly certain: when my BG goes over 120 I can tell by the
feeling in my left heel. And if I eat much over about 50 carbs per day or
have any kind of late snack, FBG will be up next morning.

I used the novolog pens to knock the Bg down as often as necessary and I
test when I do it - these last three days it won't stay down for any
length - so I am testing a lot.

I am always on a low carb diet - maybe 15 grams a day at most. I think I
have something going on elsewhere in my gut that is causeing the Bg to go
up. I normally maintain good control with A1C's in the 4.8-5.3 area this
last year.

I know it's high with a head ache right in the back of the skull and I
start arguements with the dog and lose.

The late snack was the hardest thing to quit but I quit that when the
digestive doc told me my stomach looks worse than anyone he's seen.

Sorry to hear about your high BG, Gene... That happens to all of us
sometimes, I think. Just hang in, and watch what you eat... remember,
carbs will get you, if you have too many...

I've been through the daily log bit and all it proved after three months is
that I react differently to different carbs on different days.

I'm not fat, overweight or do I have a high fat ratio. When I was Dx'd I
was benching twice my body weight and had a body fat percent of 14%. I do
50 pushups and 50 situps every morning and finally lost the extra 20 pounds
I put on after starting insulin.

It's really funny how a MD would automatically assume everyone with
diabetes is overweight. In my discipline, engineering, we don't assume
anything. But then as a test pilot when I made a mistake it was my life
that was in jepardy - not some poor slob's who was 'assumed' into a coffin
by the quick buck quackery practiced by many of today's MD's.

When I was a boy I respected doctors, lawyers and Indian chiefs. Now I
still respect Indian chiefs.

Glad to hear from you Will. How you doing? Glad to see you didn't get run
over by all the departing incumbants up in Verginny.

I'm really fine - just whinning a bit. It's not like 120mg now and then
is gonna kill me.

I would be a lot better if my son would quit changing the defaults in
this news reader.

What do you think of this flap about cholesterol and althimers? Seems
from what I heard you have a choice die early and smart or late and dumb.
Hard choice - I think I wait for the next bus.

Your daily log bit was not the diabetic 2PD-OMER Approach.

If you have insulin resistance, you have too much visceral adipose
tissue (VAT) even if you are not overweight.

This is the bottomline.

That doesn't mean you aren't coming down with something. Many
diabetics of all types report that they will find an increase in the
over all BG levels just prior to getting a common cold, a flu or
something worse.

I just recently got over a case of bronchitis and just before I
started to feel off, not even feel sick, just off, My BG tested high
all the time for about 2 weeks.

This particular MD is an established nut job. I recommend KFing him.

Hi Gene
Whenever my blood sugar does something unreasonable I blame it on the
DIABETES DEMONS. They are the little gremlins that like to f**k with
us just when we think we have our diabetes figured out. If I eat a
perfectly reasonable dinner of broiled chicken breast & salad & get a
PP BS of 192 - that's the demons. By the same token, if a large bag of
Pepperridge Farm Golfish crackers attacks me & forces their cute little
orange selves into my mouth, and I get a BS of 86, it's the damned
DEMONS again.
Saves me from a lot of thinking / worrying - Neither of which I like.
I'm with Nicky & Mack - I bet you have a bug brewing.

Hi Gene,

So good to hear from you. Cholesterol and Alzheimers isn't the half of
it... Today, I read a study that links high carb diets to elevated
triglycerides and low levels of HDLs.... I am really not surprised. It
does cross my mind, though, that I used to really load up on carbs...
You know... pasta, bread, potatoes, rice, desserts, etc...

I hope you had some happy holidays... It has suddenly become very cold
up here in Virginia.... at least compared to what we were having. I
have lived in New England before, and they have different concepts of
cold up there.....

You know Will, I'll bet a hundred years form now the doctors will finally
get it right and just say, "All things in moderation". It just seems like
Americans have forgotten the meaning of one simple word - 'enough'.

Enough food, enough sex, enough money, enough power - the failure to
recognize when enough is reached seems to be the down fall of many a good
man and the plot of many novels.

It's cold down here also but like you I define cold differently than my
neighbors. My definition of cold comes from the Wasserkoop mountain in
Germany. I landed on top of it when the wind was 30 Kts and the wind
chill was -60. That was cold to the bone marrow cold. I stepped one foot
out the cockpit and immediately when back when I couldn't catch my
breath. Even a Kansas winter wasn't that bad.

Well that's two opinions both with bottom lines - The VA docs say it's
exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam and now you tell me I'm fat base on
what? - the weight of my postings?

What a laugh. I think it was the exposure to nerve agents in Desert Storm
That is exactly when my vision blurred and when all the other stuff
started - but what the heck do I know, I'm just the owner of this 57 year
old vehicle.

My GP has the best idea - the heck with what and who caused it - just
take care of it.

You and Nicky were completely right.

I just spent the last week sick as a dog. My bg was impossible to get
below 130 for the entire week. I used used a box of Novolog pens in a
week trying to keep my bg below 200. Then today I'm cured. I have no idea
what bug I got but it gave me a kick ass fever and dropped more weight
than I could afford to lose.

I am amazed at the predicting ability Bg has.

Have you any knowledge where 'normal' readings are when some one is sick?

Is there a different goal to shoot for when sick?

I know that initially when I lost all control I was the sickest and that
by the last couple of days I just used amounts of insulin I've never used
before to just hammer down the Bg numbers and even then 130 was about the
best I achieved.

I am kin of glad I did get sick - I was worried I had lost control for
good there for a while.

Yep, you were right - but it wasn't a cold - something else. Scared me a
bit for a couple of days with a high fever and weight loss I really
couldn't afford to lose.

I had to use up my Novolog pens just to keep below 200.

I am glad it turned out to be something that explains my loss of control.

And I am amazed at how far out the Bg reacts to a health issue - something
to keep in mind.

Yikes! Have you talked to your PCP about sick day control? (Always

Glad you're over it now!

Sick day control? - must have been one of the things I missed.

I knew there was such a thing, but figured it wasn't important for me,
since I'm well-controlled without meds. Then I had a stomach thing last
year, and kind of floundered through it. I've got a better stockpile of
stuff in the fridge for those times when electrolyte balance is more
important than what happens to your blood sugar. And I now know that I
could have called the doctor even though I was in no shape to get in the
car and go in for an appointment.

no such thing really. You should do your best, and accept the
perfection is impossible, to attain the BG goals you and your doctor
set for your non-sick days.

see above.

130 isn't bad control, especially for a sick day.

The major thing to remember is that when you increase insulin to
compensate for sick days, you must also force yourself (if needed) to
maintain proper hydration, drink plenty of fluids. AND test your BG a
few extra times after you inject so as not to get unexpected hypos
from the added insulin when you are starting to recover and thus need
to cut back.

If I start getting 300's or 400's out of the blue for no reason,
either I forgot to take a shot or I'm getting some kind of viral
infection.

> Have you any knowledge where 'normal' readings are when some one is sick?

I've also been stomach-sick without having high bg's.

> Is there a different goal to shoot for when sick?

"Sick day planning" is what this has always been called while I've had
diabetes (25 years). If you were mostly succesful in staying below
200, you did pretty well, don't kick yourself for it, you really did
well.

Most of this "sick day planning" isn't concentrated on keeping bg's
perfectly normal - that may well be impossible in many cases - but is
instead concentrated on keeping you or a caregiver around to help you
with critical tasks (bg testing, insulin shots, monitoring for hypos,
proper hydration) and getting you to more serious attention should you
need it. It is not uncommon for DKA requiring hospitalization to
happen in the non-mild cases.

Tim.

Gene, I had a hell of a time last year with something similar. I was
sick as a dog and couldn't keep anything down for a few days, even my
meds. I just threw caution to the winds, stopped testing because it
was just always bad news, and when I was finally able to eat, it was
bananas and rice and other bland carbs. I think sometimes you just
have to surrender to it.

I'm glad to hear you are on the mend.

Best,

Ricavito

Thanks, Same to you.

Hi Tim, What I was mostly wonder is if the body needs more Bg when your
are sick. If it does then that would explain some of the rise. If not
then I'd guess getting it as low as possible would be better.

Or that's my take.

25 years? I don't have 25 months yet.

Well said Gene. My thoughts exactly. The problem with growing old with
diabetes, is you never know what is diabetes related and what is just a
natural progression of growing older. I would sooner have left them both
behind. ;-)

Take up road racing. Then every 5 years you get to start as the youngest in
a new age group (though some races go by 10-yr groups). Get "old enough" and
there aren't so many in your AG & you have a better shot at getting some
awards (even if you're as slow as I am).
:-)
